Painting a cast iron radiator...or not?

Hi there,

Anyone out there ever had to refinish a salvaged cast iron radiator?

As cast iron radiators go, we were lucky enough to find a real period piece, all embosed with victorian designs, and in great shape (we had it tested to 60 psi!). But it is smeared in silver metal paint to cover an obviously flaky previous finish.

I have to refinish it somehow for our bathroom refit and was wondering how to go about it. What are the do"s and don'ts I should know about?

Do I have to sandblast the poor thing or can I "simply" sand it, prime and paint?
