Here's a segment from a TV station that features a designer who made over a gal's home in one day -- simply by de-cluttering and moving the furniture around. Wish it showed more of the process and the results .....

Thought it would make a good show on HGTV -- better than some of the ones that are presently available! LOL!

Way cool. I loved it. The homeowner had some really, really great pieces to work with, however. That always makes it easier!

I'd love it if someone came to my house and did that! I always like having a fresh pair of eyes (of course, I do have you guys :-) ) It would also be nice to have a basement full of unused furniture.

Hi everyone (^_^) Thank you for your all nice words. Actually, I would like to keep some alive reptile pet inside, but my mom don't like feed-cricket hopping around! Paul, there are four 36 w. Grolux tubes above the tank , but actually the light source came from natural sunlight, 50% filtered through plaxiglass roof. BTW I also used to keep Clown Trigger and Humu Humu trigger, kind of personallity fish, right? Jaxtropix, you're welcome (^_*) very nice and many interesting blogs you have. Lisa...backstage shots...not much pretty ! The plants are just decorated with their container, so it's quite easy to maintain or replace.

Funny, funkyart, my house is a 1960's colonial...but I always wanted that old farmhouse. So we ripped out all (ALL) the wimpy moulding and baseboards throughout the house and replaced it with wide/substantial trim, Added hardwood throughout, and did everything we could to revamp the style. It's more of a colonial revival look throughout---with schoolhouse pendants, pedestal sink in the 1/2 bath etc. I bet you could make this work in your room too! I will post some pictures of the inside of the closet tonight so you can get a better idea of how big, and the layout etc. Pretty much, it is a wide reach-in. Not quite walk in closet, although it is big enough to walk into etc. just not to hang clothing on both sides. The entire closet is open, but closed off by the 3 sets of doors. 2 sets of the doors hold my clothes, and dh has one. Shoe cubbies fit on both ends (which may be may favorite part of the whole thing---Dh built them to fit shoes and purses.) The closet system is from Lowes, and I highly recommend it. You can customize it however you like and it really looks more $ than it is. We had priced out California Closets, and their bottom of the line style was almost triple the cost of these... and these are much nicer looking. If you can DIY, they are the way to go. I think that there really wasn't that much actual work done to the interior of the house and it definitely could have been completed by small crew relatively quickly and I don't think that expensively either. She probably had had painters for the walls and cabinets, floor people, landscapers, and probably a general type carpenter for the doorways and trim. Keep in mind when you are ripping out flooring, painters can move in and patch and paint without have to tarp or tape things off. This saves huge amounts of time.The kitchen cabinets were left in place and merely painted. Likely the doors were removed and taken to a shop and sprayed. The face frames are rolled quickly. The new island has basic partial overlay cabinets mixed in with some beautiful architectural details like corbels and applied panel molding. Looks harder than it really is. They may even be slab drawers with applied molding. Prefinished floors would only take a few days to install. Demoing the existing would be 2 days probably. Baseboards are popped off and replaced easily, then nail holes are filled and painted. The bathroom demo would have been the most time intensive but I think tilers would have easily done the whole thing in a week. She may be waiting on glass for the shower; that is usually a long lead time for custom. I think she did a beautiful job and has a great eye. She probably had a lot of the furnishings already. The whole time the interior was being working on, the landscapers were clearing, cutting and placing the stone. The house had great bones, just needed a facelift!

With Sophie/Holly playing off against each other like the Patty Lane/Cathy Lane (Patty Duke Show), only in drag. O.o Not sure how I ended up in such august company, but I'm not sure I would make a sufficient foil for Sophie. Lackey, maybe. Heh. I am so far out of HGTV's target market, I can't even see it from my backyard. In fact, we're so far out of that "mainstream" market that we can't even find what we want without REALLY hunting. HGTV shows don't really give me ideas, beyond "what not to do." Whereas I grew up watching This Old House with Dad (a frustrated fine carpenter by nature, systems analyst by trade), and then right into the New Yankee Workshop. Lots of this education has made it into our new build. The fine carpenter on the job is either going to love me or hate me. In my opinion, to answer the OP: Everything you see on HGTV is likely to be trendy and dated. Not a whiff of it respects the era of the house or attempts to convey the solidity of actual craftsmanship. Then again, few people really want that. They want the shinies. It's OK if you're really going to flip or stage a home. (I have to do some serious work on my 1940's cape to sell it once we get our house up. I'll probably actually use a few of the "trends" there to inexpensively make it attractive to Millenials - who are most of our target market for a little starter house). I wouldn't go anywhere near any of it for a house I meant to keep. Everything that looks "fresh" and new now will look old and tired in 5-10.

Loved what they did with the place. I agree with Reno, she did have nice things & a pretty house, which helps! She just had too much paper work & miscellaneous "stuff" that distracted from the beauty of it all.

Like Lafonda, would love to have someone come do that for me. I'm clutter free, but could use the feedback regarding arrangement of furniture & accessories. (If they'd throw in some color tips I'd REALLY be thrilled!)

I really appreciate "use what you have, AND transform your space," kind of decorating! Creating a dramatic change in a room without spending gobs of money...that's real talent!

First thought how can people live like that? some even worse, like on TV shows like clean house, or designed to sell, hubby say's no way that has got to be staged for the show, things thrown around etc., but noooo, people do live like that...OMG outrageous!! having kids is no excuse either...

She had a lovely home and furniture to begin with. Seems like they just came in a cleaned up the mess. It would be nice to have someone come in and reorganize things for me.

I took a staging class a couple of years ago, and on the last afternoon of the class we all went to a home that was on the market and staged it using only items that were in the house. It was a lot of fun, and a little crazy, because there were about 40 - 50 of us. We were put into teams of about 6 with each team doing a room.

Where did all their papers go? I liked the dictum that you should see the most attractive piece of furniture when you walk into a room, that's helpful -- but I'd be even more impressed if they could come up with a real-world way to contain all that clutter. Who knows how long they'll be able to keep it that way?

Our house is *fairly* cluttered, but that's because we're in the unending h*ll of a DIY remodel...
