I've planted many grasses & I can't get to the tag in the ground...the grass has grown too much around it...so I looked in an album I keep with tags from the plants...this one planted in 2005 & it's stayed in one clump...clump has gotten larger but managable. I think it is "Maiden Grass" ... Miscanthus sinensis 'Silberfeder' (Silver Feather). I put a link below to show a pic... Janet...it's zone 5 to 10. & LOL...the snowman plates were 75 cts. ea from GW last wk...I posted this same pic earlier to show my finds! Here's what the grasses in that basket outside arrangement looked like when I posted it in Sept...grasses still look quite good & even better, I think: jane...I've never tried "hair spray" except on Cattails...my g'ma used to do that to make them last longer in the house...but I always thought it was funny when they burst! (even if they burst gently!) jane...I'd love to take credit for "hiding the wires" but not the case...these are the Willow Branch lights that I coveted last yr. & waited for sale prices ...then they were gone! (everywhere gone!) So this yr I bought them at Gordman's (which is kind of a l/2 price store) & then had a 15% off coupon...so a real nice set for $20. Thanks, Lee and Erin! The doorknob is from Rejuvenation. You can find vintage ones on Ebay, but I took the easy way out and bought new. Once we got in on, I also had to buy the matching adorable starburst doorbell. How could I resist?! We replaced the door and it was really funny when I was getting quotes. Salespeople kept showing me the fancy doors with leaded glass and sidelights, carvings, etc., and I kept having to explain that no, all I want is a plain, flat door. Nothing fancy, nothing interesting. And no upgraded glass on the sidelights - just plain, flat panes of glass. I got some weird looks! Missy, I don't really have anything to add to the techniques listed above--all good advice. What I did want to mention is that I recently spray painted a brass bed and I used a mixture of Rustoleum Metallic Copper and Metallic Oil Rubbed Bronze and love the way it turned out. I also like Krylon ORB but it really looks black rather than bronzy. The flat black as mentioned by Porkandham above always looks good, too. Looks sort of like iron (imo) when finished. You're planning to hang the lanterns on each side of the tv? Would not crowd the mantel with anything other than perhaps an attractive wood box for long matches ... if that. Unless you mean electric sconces, do you want lanterns to hold candles or do you want oil lanterns for burning clear lamp oil with a wick? If you decide to get any lanterns at all to hang (as if sconces) and actually intend to use them -- such as during a power outage and/or just for mood light -- you might want to focus on oil lanterns that have the brackets with them AND that can be carried away from the fireplace to be filled with oil.
