A girl walks into an antiques/ salvage store......

So it wasn't a yard sale this time - no chandie but I did find something perfect this morning.

We still have yet to do our kitchen after being here for 11yrs. We could really care less about it. I've had lots of hairbrained ideas about what to do etc. but again - we really could have cared less about it to even want to begin forking out money on a kitchen reno.

So I found this pic awhile ago & thought 'Hmmm...fits our house style, cheap to do - this is good!'

And I remembered this huge old handpainted restaurant sign at a sort of local place. It's massive. So I stopped this morning to see how much they were asking for it - prepared for a price of a few hundred, some back and forth and a payment plan.

The nice lady called the owner then said:

"$50"

I don't have a pic of it yet - DH is picking it up Saturday. Of course I got the whole "That sign? Where are you going to put it? Do you know how big it is? Will it fit into our kitchen?" speech to which I responded: "Of COURSE it will fit honey! Why wouldn't it fit? It's only $50 and I have a plan! DON'T WORRY! Can I get it?"

It has the name and then says the following:

Cocktail Lounge

Coffe

Breakfast

Lunch

Late Nite Snacks

Beef

Beer

and a bunch of other stuff

Available for Banquets and Meetings

How cool will this be?! It's easily 10-13'w and 5-6' tall.

Now of course it will take up the entire wall over our sink so I'll have to rip out those cheesey, cheap cabinets over it but we were planning on making our own cabinets anyways w/ my dad's help and he designed a better layout & footprint for us.

Sue: Congratulations on moving to Kent! Beautiful choice! Spring will be lovely there! More restaurants to try while you are still in transition: Spasi and Nobe, one on either end of Mill Plain Road, Spasi nearer the Sheraton & Garden Hilton and Nobe nearer Ethan Allen's. Nobe's accoustics aren't good, but the food is. If you are a golfer (or not), Richter Park is a fabulous public course north of Mill Plain on Aunt Hack road and has an excellent restaurant called Cafe on the Green. In the other direction on Mill Plain after it becomes Rt. 6, going a few miles into NY state, stop at Rraci's Restaurant [(845) 278-6695] for really good Italian/European fare. For special occasion dinners, there is a favorite French restaurant, Ondine's on Rt. 37 North on the Danbury/New Fairfield border. Nearby, there is a more casual Jo-Jo's Fish House with good fare. If you like Indian food, try Thali on Route 7 in Ridgefield. In downtown nearby Bethel, go to LaZingara for imaginative Italian fare. There is an excellent art movie house nearby in Bethel, as well as an old fashioned menu at the Sycamore Drive-In, a vintage 50's affair. The Danbury Fair Mall has an interesting new furniture store, Safavieh, with trendy and classic selections, plus rugs. A local store, Danbury Furniture at 11 Rose Street just off Main, is going out of business. You might find a few bargains there as prices drift down. They are 25% to 40% off now. They carry Broyhill and other name brands. Near your hotel is a must check-out store, Lillian August, where you'll get some great decorating ideas and accessories, even if you don't find a furniture bargain. They are having an upholstry sale just now. You can find some good prices at The Door Store Furniture in Greenwich and good value on custom upholstry at Calico Corners on Rt. 7 in Wilton. There is a Raymour & Flannigan's in Brookfield on Federal Road that runs frequent furniture sales. Besides the excellent suggestion for Waterworks, you should stop in Klaff's on Newtown Road in Danbury (off Exit 8) to see their fabulous selections for kitchens, baths, lighting, tile, cabinets, cabinet hardware and fixtures. Unfinsihed: try the Wood Bin on Federal Raod in Brookfield. Nearby is American Tile & a Bath store, as well as Tile America, all very good selections, if not as grand as Klaff's. Appliances: check out Zemels on Newtown Road, in the Staples Shopping Center not too far from Klaff's for fair pricing and service. They have a broad range of brands including Wolf's, Sub-zero, Vikings, DCS, Thermadore, Bosch, Asko, U-line, GE, Maytag, etc. Paint: Ray Roth's is the B.Moore & C-2 dealer in Danbury & Brookfield. There is a Sherwin Williams dealer on Federal Road near Stew's. Roal's in New Milford would be closer to Kent, though. Will stop because this is overload, I imagine. There are some good restaurants in New Milford, which will be closer to Kent, but I am not as current with them. Oh, if you NEED chocolate, there is fabulous Bridgewater Chocolate north of American Tile and Tile America on Federal Road. I understand there is a fine European chocolatier in Kent as well. I too live on the family farm (my kids are 6th generation, my great-great-grandpa bought the place 96 years ago though I wasn't raised here). My cousin owns the farmhouse and barns - I really wanted barnboard floors in the FR but my great-aunt died while we were building, my uncles inherited and it was such a mess with the estate (5 acres with the house that was all she had left - my great-uncle had sold off acreage to my uncles and me earlier) that I didn't even want to ask. You'd be doing your grandfather a favor by finding a local place (check with flooring companies) that will come and tear the barn down and pay him for the wood - just tell him part of the deal is that they leave x sf for you. At first I thought your cousin lived there and was going to use it for a woodstove to heat the house, but even if that were the case he might be better off selling the barn and buying firewood. If he was just going to burn it to get rid of it, DON'T LET HIM!

Hi momtotwins, I have the BM paint fan deck here and just looked at country green. It's very pretty, and probably will soften up to your eye after things are back in place. But I wanted to share an idea with you in case that doesn't happen. I once painted my daughter's room yellow, and as often happens with this color it came out wayyyyy too bright!!! So I got a quart of the color that was two shades lighter on the paint strip, cut it with some glaze and sponge painted the walls with it. It was so subtle that you could not tell it had been sponge painted, but it was much, much less intense to the eye. Your BM store can help you with the details if you decide to try this. Lynn

We joke that the sink has cost us many many thousands of dollars. If I'd been willing to part with the sink, we could have figured out how to fit a dishwasher into the old kitchen and tucked a powder room into one end of the old pantry (old pantry was 5' by 12') and been done with it. But NOOO, the sink absolutely had to stay. So instead, we designed a whole addition around it, LOL. But it was love at first sight with me and that sink. It was one of the things that made me want to buy the house. For my husband, it was the stairwell windows and the big trees. Here's before the addition: Here's an in-progress picture of what the addition looks like from the back. Now that there are leaves on the trees, this view is obscured. On the second floor, we made the smallest bedroom into a bathroom and added a new bedroom beyond. No more taking showers standing in the old claw-foot tub! Our new bathroom has a cool salvage score too...sink from ebay! Thanks for all your warm comments. Marthavila, you absolutely made my day. Thanks.

I love the inspiration pic. you must put those lamps above it as shown in the pic. that's too cute.

I'm collecting a closet full of stuff to be used for future projects. Right Now, it consists of a printer's tray, a stencil, some fabric etc. I also have a secretaries desk that needs some tlc.

My DH also has the same comments "you're going to do what with that?

I've learned over the years not to do much to a space until I have a vision. Looks like this is your inspiration. My kitchen needs work but I'm not willing to shell out the bucks, I'm hoping I get the idea of what to do with it on the cheap. If I could only do carpentry work!

I'm not jealous.

Do you know why? Because the biggest wall in my kitchen will only hold a 30" wide print. That.........is why I'm not jealous of you getting a cool vintage kitchen sign.

OMG! The sign on your inspiration photo is incredible! My DH is a Pharmacist and I would LOVE to have something like this in our kitchen. Your new (old) sign sounds fantastic and I can't wait to see pictures.

I love your inspiration pic so much that I'm going to use elements of it in my lake house. I have a set up of the kitchen very similar. It's rustic with one wall all old brick which I have a large old metal sign on it. Now I know I have to take out the granite and put in the wood countertops, the granite is too shiny and new and then I'm going to install two of those shelves one above the other and lower the tile area. Yippee, I'll have another project to do, can wait to see the progress of yours. Love the description of the sign and for me, when it comes to art, bigger is better.

Hey lkplatow! It's The Trading Post. They moved (no fear of a wall falling in on you now!) down th estreet beside the liquor store, Not nearly as big and a lot less to chose from. Seems he may be doing a good business w/ industrial styled tables and such. They look really good. DH picked up a table top from there for a customer to refinish and he's taking it back to have industrial legs added to it.

Owner has always been such a nice guy and I hope this is the start eof a nice working relationship between DH & him because there are some superiorly fantastic industrial farmhouse tables that he does and I'd like an island.

Wow! I drive by that place every day practically. I used to go all the time when they were in the decripit building, but I haven't been in the new store since they moved - I was going to stop last week but they were closed that day. I'm definitely going to have to pop in there now. Thanks!

I stopped by 2 Tuesdays ago and saw that they were closed too! Only day & that's the one I picked! I was so happy when DH said that he had to go last Saturday. It was my first time in the new place. I have a few things from the old place.

oh wow - that will look amazing! (I still regret not forcing DH to stop and pick up this huge and awesome BBQ sign that was on the side of the road back when we lived in Atlanta. I still think about places I could hang it and that was 10 years ago!).

Sometimes it just takes the right inspiration piece to get started on a project. This sounds like just the perfect thing - can't wait to see pics!
