Help Paint and Caulk problem on cabinet doors

I was trying to be so good when painting my cabinets and caulk those seams. But, it turns out that the caulk that was in DH gun was some kind of silicon caulk that my paint does not like. So where I put it and then wiped it with my finger, the paint is just rolling off my kitchen cabinet doors. I have started scrapping it off but, how do I get rid of the caulk residue. It's real oily? Any suggestions as I bang my head on the wall!

Since oil and water don't mix, don't waste your time with soap/water. Something like Fantastic might work, or check Lowe's for a commercial type cleaner. ;o)

Keep banging your head. It would be silicon and you will need mineral spirits to remove the oily film.You will need to manually remove as much as possible as I do not think anything will dissolve the silicon.

This doesn't help solve your problem at all, but I'll nonetheless note that we have the same situation. We've lived in the house for 7 years and it has really not been a problem; it's not like anyone just throws the medicine cabinet door open (and we have kids). We're re-doing the bathroom and will probably have this situation again and just live with it, since I know of no good solution, unless you buy a cabinet built in such a way that the door stops at 90%, and I haven't seen those in the traditional style we want.

I would say you definitely want something the mfg says is paintable. IMO, mfg's are pretty good at putting what you need to know on the package. For interior, you could use something like DAP Dynaflex 230. For exterior, I really like GE XST. It is paintable white silicone. It costs a little more, but caulk is like paint IMO, even the expensive stuff is cheap when you consider the labor of using it and redoing it if you do not use a premium product. french doors leaking after new seal, caulking, etc. Help!

I'm having a similar issue. We had a sliding glass door & there was no leak. We had it replaced with nice, new french doors & it has leaked since day 1. There's no visual leak, per say, the damage shows up gradually as the rainwater seeps up through our hardwood floors. The installers have been out 3 times to "fix" the door & replace our floors & the problem still persists. Anyone have any ideas? The initial installer for this company apparently put the door in completely wrong. He sat it on top of our floors instead of butting it against it. He also busted out the old footer & puzzle pieced it back in instead of pouring a new one. The 2nd installers came out & tore the doors completely out & started over in what was to be the correct way, but still the problem & subsequent flooring damage occurs. :o(

Caulk painted cabinets?

Hello! I had my kitchen and entertainment center cabinets painted white by a professional cabinet painting company. Kitchen cabinets turned out great. However, the entertainment center corners are cracking. The company took them back and tried to fix the problem. When they brought them back, the cracking was not fixed and still present. I don’t know what process they went through to fix. They may have just added another layer of paint? Who knows. They now want to take them back and try to caulk the corners and repaint. I am concerned because with my admittedly very limited knowledge, I am worried this will also crack with time and temperature changes. The guy that dropped them off said it’s probably an issue because they weren’t done right the first time. Should I allow them to caulk and repaint? Or is completely sanding and redoing them the answer? Would sanding again damage the cabinets at this point? From my research the caulking is a controversial topic. Hoping for some guidance and from experienced professionals and/or homeowners who have lived this. Thanks in advance!

There are a FEW things that make some headway on Silicone-caulk removal...
* Contractor's Solvent seems to do OK (spray-trigger bottle).
* 3M has a bottle of Caulk-remover as well.
* McKanica (SP???) has a tube also.
* Goof-Off and OOPS list this as a capability as well...
(We get all these thru the normal ACE supply whse.)

These all take varying amounts of time, since Silicone is hard to break down.
As PG said, manually cut-out what you can.
Then, use the caulk-removers.
Lastly...use rubbing-alcohol to get any remaining dissolver-films off the cabinets.

Paint-thinner/Mineral-Spirits is worse than useless for this purpose!

I would be afraid that most if not all those products would also remove the latex paint?

The thing is, you don't caulk those seams anyway; that's where the panel moves with seasonal changes in humidity, and the caulk always tears, bunches up and looks bad. You just paint it.

I actually do caulk floating panels because I think it looks worse with a gap there. Sometimes, they hold.
