Is 1 coat of trim paint OK?

I've been getting wildly different estimates on painting our new construction home and have some questions on what painters are telling me.

1. The lowest estimate guy included one coat of finish paint on the pre-primed trim. Everyone else does 2 coats. The color is White Dove. IS one coat really OK?

2. Oil vs latex for trim?

3. BM semi-gloss vs Muralo semi-gloss for trim? The painters we started with used Muralo on the bedroom trim. Should I stick with the Muralo or is BM acceptable?

Two coats on trim. Always.

There is no reason to ever use oil inside a house. Besides, a white oil base will yellow in 3 to 6 years, then alligator after that.

BM Impervo or Muralo. I prefer the Muralo over BM.

Thanks for the info. I was surprised at the guy who wanted to use the oil based semigloss as was I surprised that someone would quote 1 coat on the trim.

Cleanliness is most important. Wash all surfaces with Dirtex or Jasco TSP substitute before sanding. Sand to dull with 180 grit sanding sponge. Wipe clean. If older than 3 years, I recommend a primer such as BM Fresh Start or SW PrepRite Classic primer. Finish with two coats of 100% acrylic enamel like Cabinet Coat, SW Pro Classic or Muralo Ultra. Be sure to use a quality brush. Chinex is best for heavy bodied waterborne paints. Michael

Some clarity around some of the statements: While acrylics have come a long way, many pros still consider BM's Satin Impervo (235) the gold standard for trim enamels. At $40/gallon, they wouldn't use it unless it delivers the type of performance they wanted. And while oils may be "old school", they still provide a finish that is far more durable than the best acrylics. Biggest drawback is yellowing over time, odor and clean up. Years ago BM introduced Waterborne Satin Impervo as an alternative, but 235 is still widely used. As for Regal AquaGlo, it is now called Regal SemiGloss and has been reformulated as an all acrylic that does indeed flow and level as well, if not better than, Satin Impervo. Their Impervo is a high gloss oil and seldom used as a trim paint.

You should be fine as long as your first satin coats go on very thin and airy -- too much and it will run off the glossy surface. Rustoleum 2x Cover literally covers anything/everything but the key is light airy passes to coat - dry 1 or 2 hrs -- repeat light airy passes - dry 1 or 2 hrs -- repeat light airy passes. I just keep coating repeating this until my color finish is to my linking (and depending on what you are painting). My 2 cents.

Okay, if you're still painting, I think you need some sleep! :-) First of all, it is always advisable to do two coats. You might get what you think is adequate coverage with one, but there will be spots you don't quite cover and YES the color does come into its own with the second coat. Palladian Blue is a far cry from Light Pewter. I think the QM will give you what you are looking for once you have two coats on four walls. Remember, there is a reflectivity factor when paint bounces off itself from wall to wall. The color builds. PB is a very strong blue green. It is lovely, but quite a departure from the gray you started with and I have a hunch that's not what you're after. I'd keep going with the Quiet Moments.

One coat wasn't enough for me. I used one coat of primer and two coats of paint.

So far I have gotten differing recommendations for the trim:

1 coat latex
2 coats latex
1 coat primer, one coat oil
2 coats oil

The highest quote liked the Muralo Ultra we started the bedrooms with. One of the oil guys didn't like the Muralo and said BM is better. Why do some of the painters prefer oil over latex? Is one cheaper or easier that the other?

Cathy. The Muralo Ultra has replaced all conventional alkyd paints. BM is not better. I use both, and the Muralo provides a porcelain like finish and is more durable than the Impervo.

There is no valid reason to use alkyd paints inside the home.

I recommend two coats of Muralo on the pre primed trim.

Yes I agree with brushworks, Muralo has the better paints in the U.S. market. Its a safer choice to oils. All my customers are all about bennie moore, until I educate them
its a none acrylic but a ceramic advanced resin product (liquid Porcelain) Muralo is at least 7 years ahead of bennie moore and is yet better then aura which is the now hype.

No - one finish coat is never OK on new work.

On a touch up repaint project with the same color - maybe.

I think I'll stick with the 2 coats of Muralo that the original painters started with. It looks nice in the bedrooms that are finished. I just can't see how one coat of finish over primer will do it.

Michael, is Muralo just simply not available on the West Coast? According to their website, it's not sold in WA, OR, CA, or ID. What's the deal?
