The dishwasher is not in the prep area, across from the range...and the fridge is easy to access, without walking through your prep area. The windows look good, too. Nicely done :)

DW and Ref swing seem to interfere. You may care and you may not. Check the measurements.

Looks pretty good but where do those openings lead? You don't want people entering from the left going past the range to get to the sink and fridge for a snack. Also, where will glassware go?

I have the same question/concern as kaismom. We have a 39" wide aisle between island and DW. When the door is open, there is only 14" between open door and counter edge and 15 1/4" between open door and cabinet side (no decorative end panel).

What type of fridge are you choosing? SxS or bottom freezer? CD (counter depth) or SD (standard depth)? We have a CD, bottom freezer fridge. The freezer drawer extends 18" out (not including handle). If you're choosing a SD, bottom freezer fridge, your freezer drawer will extend farther than that. It would be nice if you could have both DW and freezer drawer or fridge door open at the same time without interference so definitely check these measurements.

Does the island include a seating overhang? If it's only 36" wide and you're planning on 1.5" counter overhang, you only have a 10.5" seating overhang. NKBA recommends 15" for 36" high counters and 12" for 42" high counters. If you're tall, you won't want to skimp here. Even if you're not, you may not want to go with less than the recommended minimum. It won't be as comfortable to sit at the counter if the overhang is on the shallow side. Now if you've lived with shallow seating overhangs and are fine with it, then never mind. ;-)

kaismom-good eye. Need to check measurements. Looks like I have 33" betwn counter corner and fridge. But have to check clearance between dw and fridge while both open.

marcolo-beyond the island will be the family rm. We are knocking down a load bearing wall to join the two spaces. Ppl can walk on opposite side of island to get to fridge. Glassware will go in uppers on each side of range. (see below)

lisa a-Island will have 12" overhang.

How about moving the DW to the left end of the island and moving the sink next to it. Now, you won't be tripping over an open DW door when trying to get to the refrigerator from the Prep Zone or Cooking Zone.

It puts the Cleanup Zone on the left out of the way of the Prep Zone (right side of the sink on the island) and Cooking Zone and there is no zone-crossing to go to/from the refrigerator & sink or range.

Something to think about.

I recommend increasing the island's seating overhang to 15"....after counting the decorative door panels most people install on the backs of island cabinets.

Island: 1.5" overhang + 24" deep cabinets + 1" decorative door panel + 15" overhang = 41.5" deep.

Beautiful elevation of the range wall! WOW!!!

I see the island overhang is notched on the right side to accomodate a pathway from the family room to the kitchen around that closet. It looks a little awkward. Do you really need the overhang on the left end of the island? It looks like you could delete the overhang on the left end and slide everything down that 1' and probably not have to have that big notch on the right.

Also, the 3' clearance between island and the cabinetry on the right is going to be tight. What is going on that wall?

lisa a/buehl- just talked to architect about overhand we are changing it to your suggested 42" THANK YOU!!

mydreamhome- we need the notch at rt corner of island because I walk up from basement with baskets of laundry and there is a pinch point there. So we decided to do that for comfort and ease. The we wanted the 1' at other end of island for more seating. As we are a family of 5 with a huge family and will not have a kitchen table as there isn't space for one. Also here's what's going on the wall opposite end of rt side of island that you mentioned:

Makes sense, annsch. When you talk with your granite fabricator, they may be able to curve the edges and the notch some making it seem more like a design element vs. a purely functional one. I like your micro/toaster/coffee maker cabinet! Your kitchen is going to be beautiful!

A contractor came by 2day and look at the project and another one coming tomorrow. I am beside myself with excitement.

Apologies if this has been talked about already -- I am wondering about the bite from the counter to the side of the fridge. Why did you decide this? Aesthetic? I do love how symmetrical things are around the range.

For me, I love having a landing pad to the side of the fridge and I'm afraid setting the counter back like that would really affect function. But I think this depends on how you use the fridge. I read somewhere there are two types of fridge users: (i) take everything out first and (ii) remove and replace as you go. If you're the former and like to load things up in wait you might be sad to lose that extra couple inches for unloading to the side of the fridge.
