Cast iron window hardware

I'm in the process of restoring the woodwork in my 1911 bungalow. Based on the look of the hinges, I thought the hardware was brass, so I boiled the hardware in a crockpot with water and dish soap to remove the paint, then soaked it in vinegar to polish it. Well, it turns out that the hardware is cast iron. I should have tested it with a magnet first. Now the cast iron has some rust, has a strange patina and I'm not sure how to clean it up. Do I need to oil it? I'm having a hard time finding any advice on hardware. My Google searches keep giving me results for cast iron pots and pans, and I'm not sure if the care & maintenance is the same.

Any advice on restoring & maintaining cast iron hardware?
