Best whole home water filter
Comments (6)Without knowing more, I can pretty much assure you there are filters and other devices to do to your water whatever is needed. I can also assure you that you can pay a LOT of money for devices to do things that you don't need done. You can also pay LOT of money for devices that do NOT do what you need done. I would certainly recommend a water test before before going further. Really not that big a deal. However, if you want a quick indication without specific knowledge, some people get one of those pure-water pitchers that let the water trickle through an activated charcoal stack. Then they compare the taste of that water with their tap water. Sometimes they live with it for a week or two to be certain of their opinions or those of their friends. If you choose to do that and that taste is OK with you, your taste problem can be solved by a suitable-volume activated charcoal stack, probably under the sink with an extension over to the frig. ice-maker. They certainly do make whole-house versions if you want. Pretty much the same idea but bigger and more expensive. And the activated charcoal stack in either will have to be changed out from time-to-time. Some say they're "maintenance free".....but they're not. You'll have to pay attention. These units will NOT help with deposits on appliances. That's different. You're talking mineral residue there...probably from just hard water. Charcoal stacks do not soften water. Different issue entirely....and covered ad nauseam in previous threads. Use the search function....See MoreWhat type of water filter should I get? I need a course: Filters 101.
Comments (6)Sorry, I didn't see your comment until now - better 2 years late than never. My plumber installed an Aqua Pure filter about 20 years ago and I've never had a problem with it. If you haven't already installed something, try looking at their 102T or 141T models. There are other equally good brands though - my current water treatment company uses Big Blue. The most important thing is to choose the replacement cartridge that you want to use and then choose the appropriate assembly to go with it. Small carbon filters can be very slow (the first one I installed was 3 gpm), so you'll want a bigger one with a high flow rate if you're filtering the water for your entire house. I currently use an Aqua Pure AP817 filter which has a 10gpm flow rate. It works well, but it's pricey (about $32.50 through Amazon Subscribe & Save)....See MoreFridge water vs filtered tap at sink
Comments (6)I can't drink fridge water. It always tastes terrible to me. I have a filtered water cartridge that gives me great-tasting room temperature water. I use that to reuse plastic bottles and I fill rinsed out cognac bottles with filtered water and put those in the fridge. I also use the filtered water for all my cooking, for coffee, soup and everything else. We are on well water now which has a filter coming into the house. So this one is secondary. When we were in the city on city water I put in a filter with ultraviolet to treat the water. Wouldn't use it straight from the tap. I use a drinking water system from WaterontheWeb.com...See MoreFridge without water dispenser. Sink water filter sufficient?
Comments (16)Most places have great water. Some places don't. And that's hopefully something you know about if you live there. It could be organic contaminants (e.g. pesticides, drugs, solvents, ...), it could be minerals (e.g. hard water, "dirty" iron deposits, ...), it could be other industrial inorganic contaminants (e.g. heavy metals, nitrates, ...), it could be biological contaminants (e.g. viruses, bacteria, ...), it could be radon gas, or it could be harmless nuisance impurities (e.g. chlorine smell, sand, ...). Some of these are more likely in municipal water supplies, others are more common in local wells. If you know what you are concerned about, then you can look for the appropriate type of filter. Quite frequently, a big activated-charcoal cartridge takes care of things. And that's the most commonly sold filter you'd get. But for other types of contaminants, charcoal is going to do zilch. Also, it really depends on whether this is just a nuisance contaminant or whether there are real health risks associated with it. If in doubt, have the water tested by a lab. The supply in your house might very well have different water than the one your neighbor has, because internal piping materials differ....See Moreellaf
