mixing roman blinds and drapes???

As we continue to work on our major addition, I continue to find things that make me ponder, "what were we thinking??????"

In our master bedroom, we have two narrow windows on the east wall near our bed. on the west wall we have a walkout door with windows of appx size to the east windows. however, on the north wall, we have a huge window, which I would classify as a 'picture window'.

My dilemma is: Drapes would be too much for the narrow windows on the east, and not practical for the french door so I am thinking roman shades. However, I think the roman shades will look odd on the big window and I think drapes would be appropriate. Can I mix these two? The room entrance is from the south so you will view the north window first. The french door is in a sitting room area. And the narrow east windows will be in the sleeping area.

I was thinking of a silk neutral color to coordinate the bedding.

Thanks for any opinions.

YOu know I just purchased some drapes and roman shades for an area with french doors and windows. I thought the mix of this set was beautiful. I dont have them yet, so cant say what it looks like in real life. But in the pic its lovely.

Oh, I love those! I think that is the new line from Penneys, if I remember correctly.

Ironically the roman shades I am pondering are a gold that at least on my monitor, look like the shades shown in the pic.

I hope you like them once you get them...they look lovely!

Not sure why the room is coming across as dark. It is hard to photograph due to shooting into the light. I do agree that the blue won't be that noticeable until you get close to the fabric but I really love the trim. I looked at hundreds of fabrics. It was so hard to find something with blue and brown that wasn't too white or cream. I am trying to warm up the room because it is very large and doesn't feel cozy at night (although the new rug is really helping with that). I did get a sample for a pleated shade from Smith and Noble that matched the trim pretty well. I like how the pleated shade would be practically invisible during the day but worry that it might be busy looking at night though when it is down. Any thoughts?

Thanks to all of you. I so appreciate your comments. decoenthusiaste, I especially appreciate the additional pictures. I looked and looked and was only able to find one of these. The extra visual is very helpful...especially like the Enviable Designs representation. JudyG Designs, your idea is nice around the loveseat, but for me, it's more formal and a lot, a lot of fabric. With full drapes on both sides of the small windows, I was going to end up with an entire wall of fabric. (There is only 18 inches between the window and the wall on either side.) I also still have a headboard, bed skirt, euro shams, bench and wall art to add to the room. So, I think, in the end, the room will look a little less plain than it does at the moment.

So you're not getting one for $70. That's just an example. The 70 is for less than 38" long, but doesn't even mention width, so that'll make a difference. Also doesn't say what kind of headrail is being used or method to string. Doesn't include lining either. I think that price is just to reel you in, but might be wrong. You have nothing to lose to give her the size you need and see how much they want.

Window #2 would look fabulous (bed too) with drapes hung higher and wider to create a dramatic fabric wall. Great opportunity to add color or pattern to room and hide a less than stellar view. I would then use drapes on the other windows instead of the Roman shades.

They're called "window treatments" for a reason. And that's BECAUSE not all windows in a room require or BENEFIT from the "same" treatment. As you've noted, some of the windows in your room are too small to carry off a more complex treatment. Good for you for recognizing that fact! (many don't or are too afraid to say that "the emperor isn't wearing any clothes"!).

I'm a stickler for FUNCTION. I believe window treatments should be useful! You ought to be able to "draw the draperies", lower the shades, and cover the windows for privacy or added warmth.

I have shades in my living/dining area, and the adjoining library. I also have a pinch pleated, one-way draw drapery panel that covers the slider to the deck. Clearly, I've used to different treatments in the same space (they're all in the same fabric). I've done the same thing in our bedroom; drapery panels on the bay window and a shade on the mullion that overlooks the backyard.

You should never hesitate to used different treatments in the same room. As long as you use the same fabric and pay attention to details it will look fine and perform brilliantly for many years to come.
