Please help me decide on trim color for creamy cabs!

Hi all,

Have gotten great feedback from this site when I've posted before, so I'm hoping you'll all come through for me again :)

I love the color of my creamy white kitchen cabinets. In the kitchen. On the cabinets. Reads a nice, creamy white, without yellow. Not so much in my adjoining family room on the trim.

My dilemma is whether to just stick with the creamy white on all the trim - the con here being I'm not a big fan of how the color reads in the FR, or, to do the trim not specifically attached to the cabinets in the same white that is in the rest of the house - the con here being the break in continuity.

We are going with a creamy crackel tile for the backsplash, and are planning on doing the walls in RH pale silver (a light green with chameleon qualities).

Here's a pic from the FR which shows the difference (and it's even more noticeable in person) . The closer wall's crown is in BM OC-38 (the creamy white) (the trim for the doorway is just primer), and in the hallway behind is the white trim in the rest of the house.

I vote white on all the trim. White matches everything, even creamy cabinets. I think it may actually look really crisp in your kitchen!! HTH

I had the same issue and decided on matching the trim to the cabinets in the kitchen and I'm so glad I did! The contractor said that white trim against the cabinets would make the cabinets look dingy. I kept all the rest of the trim in adjoining rooms white and had the trim in the kitchen color matched to the cabinets. Much smoother look and makes the cabinets really look great.

sheesharee, thanks! rmkitchen -- thank you! I've lived at my Benjamin Moore store in the past, but never used their satin impervo & just found out today that the Cabinet Coat is actually made by them (I was SO excited --sad what gets me excited these days!) I don't know what the difference is, so I'll read up on the web and ask at the store. Please post some pix of your new cabs!! The colors sound lovely. I've hired a painter, but am really nervous b/c he was the lowest bidder -- and am wondering whether I should chance it or paint the cabs myself. This renovation business is really nail-biting. But ok, it sounds like satin on the cabs would be fine, and all the rest of the trim, next to the cabs and elsewhere in the room will be fine. Thank you both!!!

Kandt, If you are able to choose exactly which colour to paint your cabinets, then I would match the trim. Do you have trim existing? Will you be replacing/repainting all the doors/trim in your house? We are completely renovating our craftsman style house from top to bottom- so I am painting everything with the same white Benjamin Moore cloud white. It's white with just a hint of cream in it. Was even able to match my wood blinds to it as it's so popular many manufacturers have very similar tones. (By the way my kitchen cabinets are stained- but the trim will remain white- except for the crown molding over the cupboards- will then do white CM everywhere else.) Having said that- we are having a vanity custom made- but I think it will be a brighter white than the cloud white. I think in that bathroom, I will adjust the trim to match the vanity- but I'll wait until all the fixtures are in, and make the final decision then.

OK, thanks to everyones pictures, comments etc, I have decided to eliminate the glass tiles. Can't believe how quickly I finally did that. The marble is timeless, goes with any paint color, it can be traditional or modern depending on how it's used. Now I can start driving myself nuts on which marble, what pattern etc. lol By the way, the lighting in my house is horrible where I always have a hard time with paint colors. I got that blue/gray sample yesterday. Is it a go or should I look for something else? It gets to looking really blue when the lighting gets darker or at night time. gooster, I forgot to mention that the big sample sheet I had made up yesterday is Chantilly Lace for the cabinets, so it looks like I'm on target for the cabinet color.

This is a great thread. I could really use some help from all you folks with experience with green paint -- I think I need to change the wall color in my nearly-finished kitchen. For a number of reasons, I had to keep my old terra cotta colored vinyl floor. My cabinets and trim are BM 01 white -- very bright, and they look great with my Black Venata soapstone. I've put BM Nantucket Gray on the walls -- it's a color I love (my daughter has it in her living room), but I don't think it looks good with the floor. Perhaps they're too much the same value, or perhaps I need a bluer green, or one that's less muddy (Nantucket Gray is one of BM's historical colors, which are not clear colors. I love them all.) Hope it's okay if I I'm post some photos here rather than starting a new thread. As you can see, both the floor and the green walls look different in different lights. The most accurate version of the floor color is in the second picture (at least on my monitor). Unfortunately the contractor had to replace some tiles under the new range, and didn't space them well, so there's a hiccup there, but the tiles toward the left are the most representative of how the floor looks. The tiles in the next picture look darker and redder than they do IRL. (Incidentally I am not keeping the pendents.) If anyone can suggest a shade that they think would look BETTER in the room (perhaps not even green?) I'd really really really appreciate it:

We just finished our kitchen and I had the same dilemma. The rest of the house has white trim and the architect wanted me to use the same white on the molding over the cabinets, but I decided to match the molding color the the cabinet color and I'm glad I did. All the other trim in the kitchen (the door casings, the baseboards, the window sills, etc.) are the white trim color, but for the crown molding over the cabinets, I matched the cabinets. This means that in some corners, the white crown molding comes up next to the creamier crown molding of the cabinets, but you don't notice it all. At first, the crown molding was painted white, and you could really see it next to the creamier color of the cabinets and I hated it. My reasoning was if you had wood stained cabinets you would not use white crown molding across the top--you'd match the crown molding to the cabinets and make it look like one piece--so, why would you do any different with painted cabinets?

Thank you everyone! I think the nice thing is there you all did a version of what I'm thinking, and you all like your results. Looks like we'll be testing some different options this weekend, I know something will work out!

Great question, Cindy. We're trying to "rework" our older white cabinets to update the kitchen without the cost of new cabinets. I'll be trying to figure out whether to change trim colors as well. All that to say, I love your kitchen and wanted to ask two questions. What are your countertops and what knobs will you go with? Thanks for your help!
