I just helped a woman whose daughter wanted an orange room. She was determined to have the whole room painted a really strong, bright orange. Mom was not too excited about the idea. We finally found a nice medium orange and painted ONE wall (behind her headboard, facing away from the door so really, hardly anyone else could see it) the orange, and painted the other walls a paler version of the same color. She then chose some accessories in the brighter orange color. Everyone was happy and the room turned out great! Maybe you could just paint the headboard wall (or whatever wall you want to accent) red, and paint the other walls a quieter color?

If you want to keep the chair rail, there's no rule that says it has to be painted white (or your trim color) and that there has to be different colors above and below. You could paint the whole wall, including the chair rail, the same color.

Those red rooms are cool but I'd look into some of the research about the effects of color on mood. I have boys and it is my understanding red makes kids excitable, irritable and overactive. I have used red as an accent in the boys rooms but not a wall color. Maybe all the color psychology stuff is over rated though. Just throwing it out there.

My son had a red bedroom growing up....more of a darkish red...and I used white curtains on the one window and beige/white cowboy bedspread...he loved it.

Can I share a Google search tool that you might not know about. Go to search for "boys room" or whatever in Google Images. Then scroll down and on the right you'll see some little colored squares. Click on the red and it will pull all of the red images from your search result.

Maybe I'm the last to know about this handy little trick, but I can't help but share it in case someone reading this doesn't know about it. It's so cool!

My DD bravely let my grand babies select their room colors for the new home last month. My 6 year old DGS chose red; I was skeptical but it looks great. She did two walls red, two walls tan, and red carpet. Our pro-football team's colors are red and black so all the Bucs accessories and even the fish tank with red rocks created a very nice room.

I agree with gmp. Check out color and moods. Especially on walls. Red is my favorite decorating color, but I couldn't live in a room with red walls.

sotodog...I can relate...my 10 year old son wanted an all red room...we compromised with one wall in red, with the other three in a khaki color.

Repainting is easy so I let me kids pick out their own paint colors for their rooms and bathrooms, even if it's not what I would have picked. DS was nine when we did our reno and changed around his room. (He picked a pretty cool color brown/gold color, but I would have let him do whatever. DD picked very pink.)

Here's a picture of our 'red room' which I had painted looong ago; it's the guest room in our basement. Yes, it's very red, but with furnishings etc the impact is lessened.

Here's a shot of part of the kitchen, a BM color called 'Baked Clay'; has more orange and brown than a pure red (you can see it looks different in different light; the real color is somewhere between the two; ignore the weird reflections in 2nd pic):

You mentioned he likes the Ravens; DS is a sports fan too and one of the cool things we got him is a 'ball claw' to hang a signed football (it's between the Bulls and Bears pennants.)

PS - his interests could lead to some very cool wall art (which will help cover up some of the red if you find it's too strong!) Framed architectural prints or photos of famous buildings, and framed maps would make very cool wall art. I think you and he can have some fun with this!
