Designing a fireplace surround--1910 house

Hello all--I am posting here rather than the fireplaces forum because that seems to deal more with technical issues, and I am all about aesthetics! We are adding a gas fireplace to our kitchen-family room. Our house is outside Boston, built in 1910 and is a Victorian-Colonial revival-A&C hybrid. Actually, it is pretty lacking in detail, because most of the detail seems to have been stripped off along the way, so we are now making it up as we go along.

Does anyone have any suggestions for designing the fireplace surround? The hearth will be raised and the FP itself fairly small-scale. A TV will go above--not flat-screen, unfortunately. I am leaning toward an A&C style tile. I have no idea what to do about the mantel. There will already be a good deal of white woodwork in the room (beadboard, lots of windows).

Also, does anyone have any recommendations for books to look at? I need pictures!

Thank you so much.
