Traditional Modern Pearl White Kitchen in New York City
Comments (5)some additional details of my kitchen: my home is an apartment in an 125+ year-old 11 story brownstone landmark building that has a traditional and complex exterior. i chose traditional cabinets in spirit of the building's original design and chose pearl white as the base to contrast my other aspirations for the modern and efficient. i had a tough but fun time researching and purchasing everything myself (down to the Hubbell electrical receptacles). it was not easy settling on the statuary white marble and i kept worried about staining and etching. to the full credit of discussions in the Garden Web kitchen forum, i've gained enough confidence and courage to go for what i really want : ) the Emeco Kong stools were love at first sight for me in a furniture store. they are military grade and almost entirely handmade of recycled aluminum. i wasn't sure how they would complement my kitchen. but being the reckless hothead that i am, i bid the bullet...as the whole apartment renovation was a dizzying dose of self-indulgence....See MoreBackspash advise for white very modern kitchen
Comments (8)Which items say "modern" to you... hand-thrown pottery? stainless steel serving platters and bowls? Kate Spade china? square matte black dishes from Target? Marimekko fabrics (oversized prints, often brightly colored)? nubby silk-like fabric? coarse linen fabric? matchstick blinds? monochrome scheme in black-gray-offwhite-silvery matte metals ? Fiestaware? flat expanses of wood veneer? native art pieces from another place and time? Picasso or Van Gogh or Rauschenberg or ___? bamboo items? clear glass and plexiglass? turquoise color? mauve/offgrey/browngrey? earth tones? multiple "happy" colors like crayon box red green yellow blue? If you had your choice would you choose wood or plastic or metal furnishings? Any other items that you consider "modern" which might help readers understand what you're up to?...See MoreBacksplash ideas for white, modern kitchen?
Comments (20)I remember your kitchen and home from the planning stages -- it is turning out so great. I love the idea of the white or green backpainted glass or the Caesarstone. I've also seen some large format glass planks from Bellavita that could look good when done horizontally, in stacks, to pick up the lines in your beautiful architecture. Here is a link that might be useful: Large format glass...See Morewhite kitchen/architect's advice/modernism
Comments (15)I think plenty of people live in works of art or particular visions that weren't theirs. Anybody who lives in an intact or restored antique house basically does, and those groups of people make plenty of sacrifices that they would not make if they lived in a brand new house in a development somewhere. My aunt an uncle lived in a house that my uncle could not walk upright in on the upper floor, happily, for many years because they wanted to live in a very old log house. People who live in big Victorians often deal with expensive utility bills, expensive repair or restoration of most details, and there are usually lots of limitations as to what you can do that looks "right". But I think people understand this better because those houses are the basis of traditional as opposed to modernism, which was the first completely different form in a long time. I also think, since modernist houses are stripped of details that they are even more rigid in terms of what looks "right". And there were (and are) architects that will build to their vision only and the reason you commission them is to build their vision for you. Frank Lloyd Wright dictated to clients all the time. The architect of one of the houses above, regularly lost commissions because he had a difficulty letting the client have input. With modernism I think you both have to be of the same mind. People who live in modernist houses that are featured in magazines often talk about the sacrifices they make to live in such a house....See Morepalimpsest
