Really need help organizing craft room

Hello all!

I'd really like to get my wife's craft room organized over the Christmas break but we're both TERRIBLE at designing spaces. We've got a nice big room that is 14x22 upstairs that we'd like to use as a craft room.

We'd like to use the room to do scrapbooking, let the kids do some of their art projects (stickers, etc, no painting) and to store some of our old memorabilia (trophies, plaques, etc). We wouldn't want to display the memorabilia per se, rather just have a nice air conditioned place to store it for now.

I was thinking of doing some sort of wall cabinets along with lower cabinets and workspaces along the walls and then have a big open area in the middle where we could put a fold up table or 2 to work on big projects and put away when not in use.

I could just go to Ikea and buy a buch of storage cabinets and clear bins, but there has to be a better way :) Unfortunately I have no idea what that better way is and was hoping some of you extremely creative folks could help out with ideas on how to best utilize the space!

Any ideas welcomed!

ana-white.com has some great buildable storage units, work desks, craft tables and shelving. What's nice is they are modular and mostly easy to build.

The key is to CORRAL the chaos ... have bins of appropriate sizes for materials and shelves to put the bins on.

Then LABEL the bins and sort them in whatever order makes sense to you, with things you use most on shelves that are easiest to get at.

Thanks for the heads up on ana-white.com! I'm a bit of a clutter freak though, in that I like my things organized and hidden. I can't do the rooms with everything out in the open even in organized bins, it just makes me feel overwhelmed.

Our style is somewhat urban. Lots of straight lines. I do like the antique white as well but didn't know if that would be smart in a craft room where two young kids would be doing arts/crafts and playing. What do you think? I haven't picked out w/d yet so I can get whatever is necessary to match the room. I believe we will be doing a tile in there but the color is also undecided as of yet.

Now that I got rid of most of my dust and surface collecters in the bedroom (dressers), my latest improvement has been the largest, nice looking rectangular clothes hamper with lid or dh. Dh has actually been using it and grouping his clothing in that corner of the bedroom instead of all over. I bought a smaller hamper for my 4 yo dd at the same time. She uses hers too. We moved into this house last year. We're still doing things related to making the house 'ours'. I painted the kids' bedrooms this spring. We decorated back in August. Since we decorated and I initially helped them clean the rooms, they have been using the rooms and keeping them clean. I think they now have a sense of ownership. I offered the kids a reward of goldfish last weekend if they cleaned their bedroom and the playroom. There were less than 20 items to put away in the boy's room. My 5 yo cleaned it by himself and put things away into the correct places. Dd picked all of the babies and put them on a bench and threw all the rest of her toys into a toybox. My 7 yo even vaccumed.

kraftdee...you got me laughing too, on the 46 tears! Much more that that I can assure you! But thank you on your congrats. I have a friend whose daughter and 3 children moved in with her following a separation and divorce. They had enough for 2 households and decided to sell off some of it. They had a garage sale and made a few hundred dollars. She said it was so much work and really wasn't worth the time they put into it. Whatever they priced an item for, people would haggle and they would practically give it away. I myself would rather avoid the work and donate it to a charity of my choice. I have choosen the Unicorn shop which gives to children and families of emotionally disturbed children. I feel good about giving and my husband feels good about taking it off his taxes. The one problem I run into is that now for a tax deduction, you have to prove what you gave with not only a receipt, but also a photo if you are called upon to prove it. When you sneak stuff out of the house, a picture is not something you want to have. Actually I keep my photos on a file on my computer and will only give them up if we are called upon to prove it. My son gave me that idea! He likes me to get rid of stuff! Good luck with which ever way you choose.

I wish I had some pictures for you and would take some, but at the moment my craft closet is over flowing since our son moved back home for a bit and used my craft/sewing room for his living room and I've not gotten it back together since he moved back with his wife. ((YAY)) Anyway I have a four by eight sheet of heavy duty pegboard on one wall with commercial grade clear plastic baskets made for pegboard that I purchased all this when a fabric store that I worked at was closing. Not sure where you'd be able to find them, but if you can they are awesome for storing larger items on a wall. If you have mostly smaller items using the over the door shoe storage pockets in clear work great too. I had them in all our closets at our last home for storing everything from hats and mittens to health and beauty items. If you do use a pegboard make sure to buy the heavier duty because they'll last forever. Also check HoDe and Lowe's for unique storage gadgets made for them. They have little buckets, jars with lids along with a variety of hooks. We usually get ours at HoDe, but I'm sure Lowe's would have a good variety of pegboard storage gadgets too. I did a bit of a search and see there's even metal pegboard. Now that should last forever.

Would bins on shelves behind pull-down blinds be tidy enough?

She has a lot of things with doors too.

If you built one of the media center wall things, with doors and drawers around the LCD TV, with a couple of comfy chairs for crafting and TV watching, then added some storage benches as window seats you could stash a lot of things.

Use the door end of the room for the work tables and you have a multi-function media/craft room.

Oooo, I like that idea. I hadn't thought of storage benches as window seats. I was leaning towards putting working "stations" underneath the windows, but bench storage may work better.

I invite you to look at a couple of pictures I put in the craft forum gallery of my then craft room. one wall was just book I used mostly cubes and file boxes the contents of each box was itemized in a computer file so I could find something easily.
Since they have fallen to page six one of these days they will fall off the gallery

I'd start by figuring out exactly what it is that you need to have storage for, and how much of it you need to store.

You need some inactive storage space for the memorabilia. That could be drawers, shelves with boxes, or a closet. Sort through the memorabilia and discard anything that you no longer want to keep. Figure out how much you have left, and how much more you think you will accumulate.

You need to store scrapbooking supplies. How much of which type do you tend to keep on hand? Do they need drawer space, or shelf space? Same for the kids' art supplies--how much will you be storing/using? This requires getting all the scrapbook supplies in one place, all the kids' stuff in one place, etc.

You really can't plan the storage until you know what it is that you need space for. Then I'd go to a couple of stores that sell closet supplies and see what they have to offer--there are a lot of options out there. One thing to consider is that the most easily accessible storage space should go to the things you use the most. The least accessible space should go to the things you use the least, like the memorabilia.
