Do you miss Penneys' flyers?

I miss the sales flyers from Penneys, even though there was a glut of them. I don't think of going there as much as I used to. I think they have made a mistake. Maybe they should have just cut back on the number of sales. What do you think?

I'm not a fan of the new pricing. I would have liked it if the 40% off part was true. Unfortunately, it isn't. I don't think this strategy is gonna work for them from what my friends have been saying. I will miss them. I love their home goods.

I do wish you the best, but I would be very cautious ordering from JCP. In Jan. 09 we special ordered 2 chairs. They came in April and I refused delivery as both chairs were seriously flawed. I find it hard to believe they had even passed quality control from the factory. The next order came in June, and JCP sent the chairs back. The chairs were flawed again. The third and final order came in Sept 09. One chair was missing a plastic foot cap, and they were suppose to order it immediately. My DH's chair after 1 month developed 2 grooves in the seat, so I called JCP and they sent someone out to repair the chair. He said he would order the parts, and they would mail the parts to me, and then he'd repair it. By the end of Nov 09, I called JCP furniture customer service to ask about the status of my chair parts. They said they had no order for parts. I immediately said that I wanted them to take the chairs back, and return my money. Two weeks latter they took the chairs, and within 6 weeks I had received my new chairs from another company. I would be very concerned about customer service, quality control, and repair.

While a penny used to be worth something (would buy a decent-sized chunk of candy, when I was a kid) in recent years it has been able to buy less and less. And, as our wealth has expanded and our image of what we "deserve" (or, is that, "have a right to") has grown, increasing numbers of people have spurned it, to the point that they refuse to bend over to pick one up from the street/ground. I'll stop the car and pick up an aluiminum pop can from the roadside, partly because I dislike the mess (but don't carry a garbage bag to pick up all of the stuff). Partly because, having seen refugees make something from ... nothing ... I dislike waste. I doubt that the 2.5 cents that I get for the pop can at the scrap metal dealer will pay for the (itself precious) gas that it takes to start my car rolling again. But - a certain percentage of the cans are beer cans - that yield 10 cents each! In 1947, my Dad bought a mid-grade Ford, called a Mercury Monarch, for $1,600.00 - new, that is. Following a six-year stint in university and seminary, on my first year of employment, in 1953, mainly helping some refugees get back on their feet just after that war in Korea, which had inflated prices, meaning that our level of income was about the highest of all of our overseas service workers, I think, my rate of pay for the year was ... ... wait for it ... ... $1,900.00! At that time, we had a retired doctor who was helping deal with the tuberculosis problem in that country, which was exacerbated by the matter of a substantial portion of the population being rather heavily underfed. He said that inflation was government theft. In those days, I gave him some argument ... ... but now - my argument on that matter would be somewhat muted. With the middle class in the western world being hollowed out as it is - just wait. Before long, in this part of the world ... a lot of currently fairly well off folks will be glad to pick up ... ... well, by then, in Canada, at least, it'll be, of necessity, a nickel. ole joyful

When I did FSBO, I never got DL info from lookers. Rarely, if ever, do people come knocking. They call, or email.You see their callerid info when they call. I did quick pre-qual type questions. Not pre-qual on the money part, but asked if they had a home to sell, what they were looking for in a home, where they lived now, when they planned to move, etc. Just causual nice conversation, as they were asking about the home and I would answer questions too. Several times, I weeded out people that were NOT buyers at all and just lived very nearby and wanted to look. I would catch them in lies at times. In these cases, I would politely decline the showing. You can ALWAYS decline a showing if you don't feel comfortable with someone on the phone/email. Just let them know you won't be showing at this time due to scheduling issues (or whatever). Or plan it for when there is someone there with you. You don't have to answer your door either. Listen to your gut. When they came for an appointment, I often allowed them in and then went out back on the patio (or the front porch, or driveway) and let them know that I was there if they had any questions. You can prep a chair/drink under a nice shade tree and that can be where you go for all showings.(I didn't worry about them taking anything from inside, because there were none there.) Other times, I would leave before the showing with the dog, and spouse would show the home (with spouse on the patio to get out of the buyer's way, which I think is most important). If you are scared, then take precautions, protect yourself, or just hire a realtor. I found that buyers usually came with both spouses. Most lookers came on weekends after lunch and before dinner time. I had a web site with many photos and posted the URL on the flyer. I think this weeded down the lookers to those that were serious. Most lookie-lous were satisfied looking at the photos on the web. I found that all peopel that toured the home had viewed the web site prior to seeing the home in person (except one couple that was from out of state, that didn't have access to a computer during their househunting trip) I never told folks that were setting appointments when we were home and when we weren't(at work, for example). I simply set the appts and didn't tell them anything else about our schedules. I didn't say, I get home at 5, so let's set the time for 5:30. That is too much info.

I embrace the old lady decor myself! I have rod pockets, sheers, and sometimes, both on the same window! LOL! Honestly, I don't know which is more Old Lady...rod pockets or pinch pleats? Really, what did it for me was that it was suggested that I make the drapes much wider on that one window, which means either four panels, or a pair of pinch pleats. The only thing I don't like about the four panels idea, is that those darned seams won't ever lay *just right* and I know that will bug me. I also wonder how difficult it would be to open and close the drapes directly behind the bed if they're on a rod instead of rings? On the other hand...how often will they be opened and closed? Rarely, would be my guess. I do like that pic of them, though. Really pretty all gathered on that rod. Someone tell me what to do. I asked to see the sample of the "Jewel Tex" drapes at Penney's, and the sweet sales lady said "My Mother has had those same drapes up in her house since the '60's. You don't want those." Which made me just LOL right there in the store! They do have that certain slubby, cheap hotel vibe about them, but I kind of like it. At least in photos. *sigh*

I never look at sales flyers, so no, I don't miss them.

I think many look at the flyers as an excuse to shop - I know 2 of my sisters do. "Oooh - look! Dishtowels (or plates or vases or whatever) for 40% off!! Oooh - let's go shopping!". Does it matter they have eleventy-million dishes, vases, sweaters or dishtowels? NO! They're 40% off or whatever, so MUST SHOP NOW.

Thank you, no.

I won't miss them at all.

i did look, little girls dress for $30, that was a bit expensive...the mens' shoes at $50 and a suit $130 were very reasonable to me...i'm sure the suits wern't quality, but not bad for a young guy starting out...but the sales pitch in the ad was wrong, at least to me...

why the stores just didn't go back to month-end sales i don't know...for the younger ladies here...they had tremendous mark-downs usually on a weekend (end of the month), and the stores would be packed...i almost always went...

There was nothing amazing in the sparse Pennys flyer. I don't think their new strategy will work. People like sales.

I wrote to them and telling them what I thought of the catalog/ad received in the mail (garbage) and what I thought of the ads (fliers). I put it nice, but reminded them that many of their customers are seniors, and jewelry, hands, feet, just don't cut it with me.

Was just talking to my mom about their new strategy today. I don't like it at all and by the few amount of people in the store, I would say I'm not the only one.

I never been drawn to shop because of an ad so no I don't miss them. I only check ads for specific items I am looking for. Not into clothes shopping at all.

I'd be perfectly happy if no one ever sent me flyers--so no, don't miss Penney's. Can't recall the last time I shopped there, so it's not an issue to me, one way or the otehr, as to how they price their merchandise.

As to the comment that people like flyers--seeming to indicate that they draw customers? WalMart doesn't send flyers out. There have to be at least a half dozen WM's near me, and every single one is packed to the gills every time I stop in, so flyers aren't as necessary as some seem to think. And mind you--their reputation nothwithstanding--WM is NOT the cheapest game in town. As a matter of fact, they are a LOT LOT more expensive than some high end stores for some of the products we buy.

Not true in my area.... WalMart DOES have flyers sent in the local papers here.

WalMart doesn't send flyers out there? Here in Canada they send weekly flyers.

I must say, I really look forward to Thursdays when all the flyers come in the paper. I shop grocery flyers......despise shopping for clothes so I don't look at those flyers.

I hated that JCP TV ad with the people screaming "Nooo.." I could care less if I never see another JCP ad!

I hated that ad too, Jannie, it was beyond irritating. We get WalMart flyers, both in the mail and in the newspaper. We try to avoid that store, tho that is difficult because our retail choices here are so limited.

I love Penney's for their household soft goods, I would guess that 90% of our bedding and 100% of our window dressings came from there, including my custom blinds and draperies that I bought last summer. I don't know where I turn to if they went away!

I rarely looked at the ads so I don't miss them. I do shop Penneys a lot for rugs, curtains and bedding.. so I hope I can still get good deals on those things when I need them.

I wonder if they will still continue to send the $10. off anything coupons? Those always got me into the store.

No, I do not miss the flyers. They all looked alike to me.
Haven't been in the store yet. I do like Penneys, though, for Clarks shoes, undergarments, socks and a few other things.

Nobody's mentioned all the flyers/mailings, sent from Kohl's! They are ridiculous, and everything is ALWAYS on sale. So like Mary's sisters, people flock to the store to get their "deal". So Penney's deciding not to do the same, may get hurt. Some Penney's stores have already closed. I hope this doesn't cause more of a downfall.

Their flyers and new commercials are tastefully done but I never have bought anything there and probably still won't.

I have a Penny's credit card and it's my birthday this month so I got a $15 coupon in the mail.

DD and I went to Penny's today to get her some maternity clothes. We did notice lower everyday prices throughout the store. The same exact clothes were priced higher elsewhere and Penney's had the basic tops pretty close to the Burlington outlet prices.

DD told me a client told her that Penny's was losing business with the $10 off coupons and "sales". Everyone waited for those and didn't shop there the rest of the time.
They are trying to rebuild customer loyalty on everyday value instead of jacking up the price and lowering it for "sales" like Kohl's does. I hope it works for them. Their quality is much better than Kolh's. As someone who really doesn't like to shop I dislike Macy's store layout so I don't shop there any longer. I used to like it a couple of decades age before they turned the stores into a house of mirrors.

Foggyj, sounds like Boscov's here. I never buy anything there if it isn't on sale, because if it isn't on sale today it will be tomorrow. I don't trust that type of retailing. One thing I think was so hard on Penney's were the survey discounts. If you did the survey you got a 15% off coupon that was good for one day of shopping, on nearly everything. I have to think that turned into a marketing pariah since the surveys were on every receipt.
