Is this a dumb idea for a kids room?

My 4 year old daughter saw a pink smaller bird cage a few months ago and said she wanted it. Says it about a lot of things and I just said well not now. Maybe you can ask Santa for one. Which she didn't. Then this morning I saw the YHL blog and they used birdcages and in my brain popped an idea. What if I could find a large one with a large door and paint it pink and use it to store her stuffed animals, instead of the two mesh containers she's using.

Am I inviting some sort of potential disaster if I did this. Assuming the opening is smaller than her head. Also where would I find one? I would Not hang it. Just place it on the floor or a bench she has.

Edited to say I won't hang it.

I love that idea. You can start your search with pet stores. Maybe they have clearance items, or check Amazon for decorative ones. Also, homegoods, hobby lobby or BB&B.

How about a real-life room? This was my son's nursery. These are older pictures as he just started Kindergarten(!) and it's been changed to a "big-boy" pirate room instead of a nursery. The crib has been converted to a full and there's a side table to the left now. The ugly carpet and couch have been removed and there's a huge table with a porthole in it's place. The rocking chair is gone now too. The ceiling fan has been painted. See below:

One of them went over trying to save the other two. I know if it had been a loved one, I probably would have done the same. It's so sad that it ended up killing him. How easy it is to judge from the comfort of our living rooms against people we've never met but these kids could have easily been your own children. It just takes one moment in a lapse of judgement to have tragic results, and I can guarantee we've all made a bad or reckless decision before. Even the smartest, most intelligent, best-raised people make seriously poor decisions at some point in their life, except they're usually lucky enough to survive them. I think the world would be a better place with a little more compassion. How terrifying that must have been in their last moments. :(

I used Miracle Gro Moisture Control Organic Soil (I bought a big bag at Costco and used it for other plants, so it is what I had here). The pot does have some drainage holes on the sides and drains out into a saucer shapped edge. I rarely (if ever) water it to the point where water comes out of the drainage spots though. When I repotted the plant the soil was very moist. The roots didn't look alarming, but to be honest, I don't exactly know what I am looking for. I have been encouraged to see some small new growth on it, but want to be sure I'm doing the right thing to let that new growth have a chance. I also don't want to throw away a viable plant, but if there is no hope, I will move on.

Maybe something like this where the top opens, but a little larger and I'd paint it pink.

I think it is a clever, fun idea! You would need to be sure she couldn't get her head in the door, though!

Maybe estate sales, or garden catalogues like Charleston Gardens would have something.

I would be leery of a choppy vintage one, out of concern that the choppy paint be lead based. I love the idea.

Avoid lead paint and sharp edges that will rip the animals and it's a great idea. If the doors pinch, remove them.

Keep the current mesh containers though--there's a good chance that the birdhouse will be the home of just a few of the animals. It'll likely be a toy and not just used for storage.

Thank you for the advice and ideas. Definitely will make sure we sand blast it before painting to remove any old paint.

Fork, I think you are right she will play with it as I think her fascination with it comes from a Tinkerbell movie.

I think you're going to find pet store cages too expensive.
Check Craigslist for a wider selection at affordable prices, especially since you're willing to clean and paint. I've also seen them at Tues. Morning.

We have the product linked below. It does a good job of storing stuffies. It only comes in a large size, so it might not be what you are looking for. I have no association with the product.
