Can anyone help me with info on Chickenpox?

My greatnephew has Chickenpox. Both my brother and I had it as children. Is there any risk of us passing it on to anyone else if we've had contact with them? We are in and out of the nursing home so much I am worried about passing it to someone else. Should we worry about this? My brother was just with his grandson last weekend about a week before the rash started.

I'm pretty sure we're safe from infection, just concerned about others.

If you both had chickenpox as children, you should be ok and not contract it again. Moreover, if the boy did not come down with chickenpox for yet another week, you should be ok.

I don't think you need to worry...if I remember right...it's very contagious right before the first Pox appears...and until the pox's scab over!

Apart from Den kingianum, all the orchids you listed are warm growing/ Hard cane Dendrobium types. One should be called Mini Stripe rather than Mike Stripe. The Dendrobium kingianum will grow in almost any conditions, but you need a copy of Wilford Neptune's notes to flower it in zone 7. It is winter here and the kingianums are outside just protected by shadecloth while Phalaenopsis are inside this house (death out there for them). Wilford Neptune's notes will tell you how to emulate "winter" in South Eastern Australia.

You guys are not particularly helpful. Or nice. My best guess, and this is only a guess, would be that it's a maple tree. In the second picture, to the right of your ear, there's a scale of bark separating from the top side that looks thin (which can make climbing hard). When a scale of maple bark separates it can be relatively thin like that, whereas other common trees, oak or walnut, usually have thicker, bark that doesn't scale as much. On the flip side, it doesn't look as scaly as I would expect from say cherry. Without more info I'd guess maple.

1920-1930ish?But dovetail drawers usually are either earlier or indicative of more expensive furniture. It’s not my era, so a collector specializing in this might be more informative. It looks very useful for a sidetable in a dining room ( placemats, napkins, candles), a guest room (TV, extra linens, drawer space for guests), an entry (gloves, scarves, purse), children’s room (folded clothes at a child’s level).

When I was working in the NICU, this was our policy. If you already had the chicken pox, you couldn't pass it on and were allowed to visit. We did quarantine the babies though if anyone did come down with the pox who had visited.

if i were you i'd check w/ the nursing home staff just to be sure. adults can actually get chickenpox again if they have a mild to moderate case as a child. it is sometimes deadly in adults too. my dh has never had chicken pox and is very careful around kids who are sick w/ anything. i had a very severe case as a child but i still would not be caught around a child w/ it or soon afterwards. there has been a resurgence of cases in adults who previously had it as kids, researchers think our resistence has worn off over the yrs. ~ liz

Mush- You might want to google and get more information.
Liz-There is also a vaccine for Chickenpox.I'm surprised it hasn't been recomended to your husband.You might want to check with your doctor.

Once you have chicken pox and you recovered, it goes into remission and you never "get over it". The virus lies hidden in your body and can return many years later as "shingles". Also, it may stay in remission to the end of your life without a flare-up.

There's a vaccine available for Shingles. I haven't had it, but I'd check with your family doctor before exposing yourself to a child with Chicken Pox.

bigfoot_liz -- You are the only other person I've heard say that she had a severe case of chicken pox. What do you remember about it? Do you have scars? Did you have sibs who also had the pox? Have you had shingles and/or the vaccine against shingles?

I'm an only, but I recall hearing that this often strikes and builds. The first child may have a mild case; the second, worse; the third, severe.

I have a dime-size scar on the outside of one knee. When I had the pox I couldn't walk. (Also some scars in my eyebrows and on my chin.) I had one mild case of shingles and have now had the vaccine.

Curious to hear someone else's experience.

My siblings and I had chicken pox when I was 10 yo. It started with my 9 year old brother in fourth grade. He stayed home and gave it to my two toddler bothers who were 1 and 4 years old. My other brother who was 8 yo got it and then me. Each time one of us got it, we got a progressively worse case. To top it off, the 1 yo had gotten a mild case the first time and then ended up with a second and worse case of it after I got mine. He did end up with a few scars.

adellabedella -- Thanks for that information. It sounds like the pox just built up stronger and stronger within your family. Your poor mom!

I don't understand why anyone would refuse to have her child vaccinated against chicken pox. (If the child is healthy.) You're not only protecting against pox, but sparing the child the possiblity of painful shingles as an older adult.

All I can say at this late point is NOT to use a steroid ointment on chicken pox.

DS had severe exsema (sp) at the time and was being treated with the steroid ointment. I used it during the CP and it got pretty ugly. The virus and ointment reacted against each other and made his little legs raw. Dr. said to stop the ointment and soak his legs in warm water, some corn oil, and (I think) Aveeno oatmeal bath which finally healed him.
