Hanging pictures and mirrors

Have many of both, and would like to be able to hang them without putting holes in the walls. Command hooks don't seem to work as they don't sit flat to the wall. Any helpful suggestions?

We use "Monkey Hooks" (see link below). You still need to make a hole in your sheet rock, but it's very small and easy to repair.

Another option would be to install picture rail. In old homes, pictures were hung from these rails with ribbon or chains, and now clear fishing line is used. You can use picture rail to sit a picture on. This link has a number of picture rail ideas.

Kathie, this is going to be of absolutely no help to you right now, but I swear I have your foyer's cousin at my home. I don't have the two "closets" on either side of the entry door. I do have the open space to one side as you do, but where you have the french doors, mine is a solid wall. Everything else looks just like yours. As I said, cousin but not exactly a twin to yours. I have that ledge up there just as you do....oh, and all the oak, too. Okay, all that is nice huh? Problem is I am not at this particular house right now....I am at our lake home that we have been remodeling for the last two years. I may get to our other home next week and if hubby can teach me how to take and post pics, I will show you my foyer. I have the most adorable "circus people" on my ledge...hard to imagine I know. I have a curio cabinet where your grandfather clock is right now. I will say I think my space was little easier to work with as I didn't have as many open spaces as you do. Anyway, if you want and can think of it, remind me to show you your foyer's cousin. HA! It might give you a few ideas...or at the very least, be a little bit fun. I've never seen anything like that either. Have you ever used Ook professional hangers? They're great, it's all I use. Ook hangers. They'll hold a lot of weight and no honking holes in the wall, even for heaviest hangers pins (nails) are still thin. Our FR is low light and L shaped, so a large room that felt like a cave. I put 3 large mirrors in various spots to catch sunlight and bounce if off other mirrors. So the main focus was on position with stud being secondary. I had always used Ooks for everything else so decided to try them with the mirrors. For the largest mirror (about 36" wide by 30" high with a 3" frame) I used 3 of the treble type (they will hold 75lbs or 100 lbs). One on each outer edge of frame and one in center. Think I might have hit one stud. No problems, no big holes in the wall, they've been there for years. I used to be only able to find them at LNT, but since they've closed I've noticed them other places. For sure Lowe's has them.

My DH is one who does those days of 'hanging magic' for special customers or friends. Of course he doesn't have a decorators eye so placement is all up to the homeowner but in the end everything is well hung ;-) What a treat for you to have help with both the eye and hanging skill and beautiful results.

What is the difference in using monkey hook or a nail? you still have a hole in the wall. When I move a picture I just put matching putty in the nail hole or break off a toothpick in the hole.

From what I understand, the Monkey Hooks make a much smaller hole than nails.

And you will trust your mirrors to that thin piece of wire that makes that small hole?

My mirrors are on cleats. No chance of them crashing down.

LuAnn: what do you mean by cleats for your mirrors? Since I am concerned about the weight, I talked with a maintenance man who told me the Monkey Hooks are very strong. However, may end up searching for studs and using regular hangers for them. Will also check when I purchase the hooks. Have you had bad luck with the Monkey Hooks? Thanks for your input.

My mirrors are heavy, and I don't want them to fall.. so I cleat them with this:

Are your mirrors UNDER the weight limit of the monkey hooks? Mine aren't...
