Ignoring the whole north-facing, dark room issue for a moment. How do you want your family room to look? Whatever you end up with, it has to be something that you like, not just what designers say you should do. All the color advice in the world is useless if you don't like the colors, shades or tones recommended. So my gut feeling is that if you mostly like creamy walls with white trim, then that's what you should do in this family room, instead of trying to embrace darker colors. Creamy, warm, white walls will certainly brighten this space, while darker walls may make you feel it is too dark. Short-term, a lighter colored area rug or two will brighten up the floor and make the room seems brighter and airier. Long-term, I'd invest in more lighting. Two chandeliers, if the room size is large enough. Wall scones, definitely. And a few floor and table lamps for task lighting. You've got dark floors. Stick to light colors on the walls and mid-tones for the furniture. I moved in to a house with one room painted a dark, navy blue. It wasn't cozy, it didn't warm up the room. The color just made the room dark. And no matter how many lamps I added to the room, the wall color just seemed to soak up all the light. It was either paint, or saw the room off the house. So my advice is that if you like light-colored walls, putting up a darker color in an already dark room will not work for you.

I love brown and gray together. One of my favorite outfits is a pair of gray wool slacks, white shirt and a medium brown sweater, worn with any scarf that has brown, gray, white and black in it. A surprising number of my scarves have those colors in addition to another more dominant color like blue, yellow, or orange. Never green and never red, though. I don't see any reason why your very neutral sofa shouldn't go with both brown and gray. Adding....I don't really care for that rug, as looking at it would give me a headache!

Hello, original poster Adri here. Sorry I haven't been here in awhile and I lost my account info so I created this new account. Thanks for the replies. The bedroom actually looks a tiny bit better than the last photos. I hadn't painted behind the cabinets and if you look at the bottom where the carpet is, I hadn't finished those parts. I'll upload a new photo in the near future. TChat, I actually regret getting that art. I wish I got a framed art like the one someone creatively posted above in a mock up. Anyway, I got it from Walmart and it was crazy expensive (to me) https://www.walmart.com/ip/Eucalyptus-Canvas-Art-ACEE-24-x-48/168519484 for over $100 and that was for just the canvas. I needed to get a wood frame which cost another $20 and I had to stretch it and use a staple gun to attach it. I regret but it but I learned to be more patient since then.

Move your current sofa table against the back of your sofa to see how you like that. Also, you need a large art piece on that wall.
