who uses Chia Seeds in their diet

I have heard that Chia Seeds are very good for you. I am thinking of buying some.

Was wondering how you use them, do you cook with them, add to cereal. Just not sure how or much to use.

I think we need to check anything we out first. I too have seen the ads, but?? Look at Alfalfa Sprouts--Watch places like Consumer's Guide, Mayo Health Foundation etc.

I add a tablespoon to my breakfast, sometimes that is greek yogurt, sometimes it is eggs, or a flax based pudding. I enjoy the nutty taste. They are high in omega 3's, help keep sugar levels even, are supposed to add energy.....and they are cheap.

I grew a little patch of it at 45 degrees latitude. It grew quite vigorously but never flowered at all and ended up succumbing to frost in early october. I'm growing it again but strictly for the copious green shoots. It works well in pesto mixed with basil. It's a kind of sage plant. The nice thing about it being a short day plant is that it just grows and grows and takes the heat without getting bitter or flowering. Just chop the top 2 nodes of fresh shoots and it will put out side shoots. The seeds from the analyses I have seen are one of the best food sources of calcium, so I would imagine the greens are also calcium rich.

I never heard about them providing an energy burst nor have I noticed any change in my energy level. I take them for the fiber and Omega-3 fatty acids. Don't forget that 1 tablespoon has about 60 calories. Every calorie counts so you might have to adjust elsewhere if you're now adding an additional 60 calories to your daily diet. I'm dieting mainly to bring my blood glucose levels down (I'm a type 2 diabetic who has ignored healthy eating for the past year and a half). Secondarily, I'm dieting to lose weight as even a little weight loss helps with the glucose. I'm seeing a pair of nurses who are diabetic counsellers about once every 6 weeks. Following their advice, I am keeping a food diary (when, how much, etc) and a log of my glucose levels and how long after eating I checked the glucose. It helps to see exactly how each type of food effects them. I am also counting carbs. 15 grams of carbs equals one serving. I am limiting meals to 2-3 carb servings and occasional snacks to 1 - 1 1/2 carb servings. I'm only weighing myself when I visit the diabetic clinic. I think that the food diary and the glucose log are what keep me on track. Without writing these things down it's so much easier to ignore them. When you have to look at the numbers in print it's sobering.

Oh! I get it now. I wasn't trying to put you on the spot. Just trying to answer. My favorite place to buy them in smaller quantities (no more than a pound or two at a time) is whichever local grocery store I'm in, for the sake of convenience. Most often, that's Whole Foods. If there's only white in the bulk bins and I want red, I'll buy it in the package on the shelf, and usually check the verbiage for where it was grown and processed. I like the least handled stuff. OTOH, if I have to drive any distance and search it out, I'd just as soon try Amazon (again, for convenience), and if I don't like what's there, I'll branch out farther online. I'd rather spend five minutes hanging with you guys, and more actually cooking the stuff, than save a dubious dollar (including my gas, depreciation, and time) looking for it cheaper elsewhere. With the kinds of whole grains and seeds you asked about, I don't see a real quality difference between the brands that I've deigned to buy in the first place. With wheat, there is a protein difference, but I still persevere in making bread from the locally available bulk wheat. I have ordered large bags of the high protein wheatberries which I reserve for pizza. That's not so much a quality difference, though, as a crop difference.

Since I already have intestinal problems I probably would not use them. I am not a water drinker, and yes I know I should, but I do hope it helps others.

From what I have read now, Chia Seeds are very beneficial. I just bought a bag of organic ones.

Dr. Oz did a segment on them once. From what I've seen I thought they were quite expensive.

I use flax seeds. Are they that much better?

It might be okay if you can live with the side effects...personally I don't think I would like grass growing out of my head or on my butt......LOL

I have been known to throw some into cookies or muffins. I can't eat them as "pudding" - if you soak them, they get swelled and slimey like tapioca.
