Poor little puppy. I'd let her sleep with you if she always does anyway. You'll have to lift her up on the bed, and off too, but she'll rest better if she gets to sleep where she always sleeps.
It would have been nice if he'd given you some tranquilizers for a couple of days.

Give her your pillow to sleep with in the kennel, along with a hot water bottle and maybe a ticking clock- like you do with puppies and stuff.

Sorry to hear about Misery. As a Dachshund owner (mom) I know it is easy for them to hurt their back. I was told when I got mine to never let her jump on or off the sofa or bed. But she does it before I can stop her.

It is going to be a long 3 weeks for her and you. I sure hope it works too. Keep us posted. And I hope she is back to her old self soon.

Wow, I know this will be as tough on you as it is for her.
Just keep reminding yourself that this is for her own good. It could get worse fast if you don't follow the doctors orders. They have seen a lot of this and know best.

my moms dog bingo a daushund had 3 back surgeries, one was at cornell university, expensive over 7000.00 yes you heard right, they are so tiny and legs so spindley and theres no way in heck you can stop them from jumping up or down or stop them from being over excited...they are nutty little creatures. to be honest with you if he/she has never been in a crate i wouldnt do it because it will just make them way more stressed out..i dont like crate training anyway but if the pup is used to being with you i think someone suggested a pillow or something that smells like you that might work...its comforting but for bingo we carried him everywhere including mom and dads waterbed everynight lol otherwise hed stay in the living room crying worse than a 2 year old. we had to be real careful thoough..if he wasnt near my mom OMG, for such a tiny lil thing hed sure as heck raise holy mary ..**** good luck and wish the baby well

Aww...poor baby! Roxie (my dachshund) did the same thing a year or so ago and it was awful! I agree, if she usually sleeps with you, I'd let her do it. Just keep her as quiet as you can and let her take lots of long naps.

When Roxie was so bad we made all the DGKs get down on the floor with her so that she wouldn't even try to jump and get to them.

Give her gentle hugs and scratches for me. Thank goodness you did take her in when you did! I second the suggestions to let her continue to sleep with you, they get sooooo attached to us and it would be more traumatic, I think, to be away from you. Just make sure you're not too heavy a sleeper to tell if she's restless and about to jump off!

I hope she does well. Ask the vet for pills to tranquilize her or help her sleep. My dog had Rimadyl when she was spayed, not sure if that's good.

When our male Jack Russell dog got operated on for his luxating knee, we were told that they shouldn't be jumping up and down on furniture.

We use footstools for the car we take him out in. I have a footstool for the couch and my recliner chair to jump on it and off.

In the bedroom as he sleeps with me, I have a bin that he jumps up on and then up to the bed.

Buy one of those ramps for the bed, couch, car to go up and down and train that it can only use the ramp and no jumping at all.

I would let your dog sleep with you at night, just make sure no jumping up or down.

Its the jumping where they can do the damage.

It won't like being inside the kennel but if it means no more damage then its well worth it. The vet doesn't want it moving around to injure it or make it agivated more.

Connie; my son's fiance has doxie's also, and 1 did the same as Misery, It was a long month but Cali is so much better now, they still try to keep her somewhat quiet but with 3 doxies it's hard to do. The key is to keep her kenneled and quiet..
I know it's so hard on us when they are sad and sick..

Another thing is to make sure they are not carrying any extra weight. Get them lean and keep them that way. I have to help trim nails on two dachsies, the first time we went, the Vet(!) told me they were Bassetts. Not!! I bet they weighed 50+ pounds. I can't pick them up! Both of them have serious back problems and joint problems. Lean, lean, lean!!!

Poor baby. I hope she feels better soon. It is so hard to keep them from jumping and playing with the other dogs when they feel good--maybe she won't mind the kennel so much while she is feeling bad. I would let her sleep with you too so she isn't too stressed at night. Alex, Baxter and Rascal hope she feels better soon too. Sheila

Do you have a vet that does spinal manipulation? My daughter takes her dogs to one and it is amazing how much better they feel after being adjusted. She has a doxie and a Jack Russell Terrier. So hope your baby gets better really soon. I feel your pain for her. I have a little Pomeranian.

Well the crate is coming this morning sometime.
Last night I carried her out before bed so she'd potty. I had tried earlier at the vets and after coming home. She wouldn't go. Vet said her bladder was full. She hadn't went since 11am! Now this morning she is still laying, she slept with us. I put her on and off the bed.NO shaking and quivering this morning, so I think the Prednisone is working.(gosh but she was a pitiful sight last night) She did bark to go potty and I carried her out againa bit ago. I knelt right in front of her to be able to pick her up again when she was done, she ran right by me before I could get her. Up the three steps to the front door! UUUUUUrgggggh! The little turkey! I know the steroids are going to make her feel better eventually and darn I don't want her to reinjure it again before its even healed!!
She is a sparky lil gal and really the best dog ever!!

I am NOT looking forward to whines and yelps when she wants to be out of that crate and I know its coming! I will pick up the usual dog blankets and close their bed off in hope she takes to the crate. I don't have a whole lot of hope though can you tell?

I am so sorry to hear this....I know i have read so many books since I got Eddie and Ivy and their is no way you can really keep these breeds from jumping and hopping etc...they are willful puppies...and sooo active....I hope Misery feels better soon and her healing goes easy on all of you....Eddie and Ivy said doxie hugs....Stacy

we've been dealing w/ my beloved Sandy, an airedale terror mix who is 10yrs old acting like 2, having 3 slipped disks for a yr now. last dec 07 she was on confinement from having a damaged ACL which we successfully recouped her from w/o surgery. well as soon as confinement ended she was really celebrating and hurt her back, we found out she has bad disks in her neck, shoulder and hip. she was back on confinement for months and now we give her Dasuquin MSN & Synovi G3 soft chews both of these products i HIGHLY recomend, thou they are expensive. we have seen a huge difference in her activity level when we run out of one or the other and she goes w/o for more than a week. she is also on Robaxin (mild muscle relaxer) & Ascriptin (coated aspirin) daily. i have been reluctant to go to prescription pain meds as they are hard on the liver & kidneys, we will be adding accupuncture soon. i have another dog, tracey, w/ severe hip displasia (bone deformity) and accupuncture has been a miracle for her.

i hope you find relief for your baby, they tend to take these things in stride but us humans don't lol :-) ~ liz

She is feeling MUCH better! TOO good IMO. The vet said she would and that doesn't mean her disk is healed. She hates that crate with a passion! She won't sleep in it, I gave in and carried her to bed. Raises a total stink bigtime. I think its traumatizing for her too. She's never been in one. I do let her out every couple hours, and dang if I didn't catch her on the couch! I don't want things any worse, so now DSis bought up a leash. Mine is retractable and didn't do much good. As long as she lays in the bed which she loves better than the crate I leave her, if she starts wandering the leash is going to be hooked to furniture of some kind.
Stacy is right, they are willful and so active its hard to keep her quiet! Someone comes to visit and she is nuts. Loves everyone and wants to greet them and be loved.

We have a 13 month old Dorkie, dachshund and yorkie mix and the vet told us not to let him jump off things because they have weak backs! Ya right! We can not keep him off things. He jumps off the couch, our bed, the recliners. It's enough to drive me crazy!

I am so sorry- but I can't stress enough- DO NOT put her in the larger crate!!! She will have more room to move around- and can damage her back more!! It is imparative that she not have that much room- being in a small crate makes her stay still.
That sad, I am so sorry for both of you. I lost my dach a few years ago- at 4 years old. She was fine in the am and comepletely paralyzed at noon. No stairs, furniture- nothing. I am SO protective now of her sister.
