How do I repair this plaster ceiling crack / sag?

Hi all, we bought a 1940's brick house (does that count as an "old house"?). In the kid's room is a long crack / ridge in the ceiling plaster. My husband tried sanding it down last night and it looks like it has a mesh product underneath that's sagging. Maybe there was a crack for the previous owner, they tried to repair it with mesh tape, and it sagged? Anyway, I don't know how to repair this. We're new to the DIY scene, but we're pretty handy, so I'm looking for the simplest way to make it look as good as possible. If the "right" way to fix it is best left to a pro, then I'd love some tips on the best way to at least disguise the problem. It's the original plaster ceiling. Thanks for your input!
