You have a very nice warm masculine family room. I love the all the leather and the wings are gorgeous! But you also have quite a dilemma here if you don't stay with a ceiling fan.

We have this one in our master bedroom with antique brass. We bought is over six years ago at Home Depot, but I'm pretty sure they still have it in the stores. I've not looked at lighting for a while though so I could be wrong.

Whatever you get it will have to be masculine in my opinion. I do think wrought iron would work since you have enough black in the rooms to make it fit. Have you looked for something in the craftsman or arts and crafts styles? They often are wide yet not so tall.

Oh, I really like your fan! Yes, I was thinking that I could go with black instead of antique brass if need be. The few craftsman/arts crafts style light fixtures I've seen that would fit vertically still look so tiny to my eye.

I think my eye is just used to seeing a ceiling fan there and anything that isn't at least 36" wide will look too small. Getting something that wide but only having two feet of height to do it in just isn't working. (Even when I find one that actually fits into that space, the bulbs wind up too close to the ceiling.) I've seen a few very contemporary fixtures that would fit well into the space and are really nice but, decor wise, they don't fit into my house at all.

Thanks justgotabme, I think I'm back to looking at ceiling fans with light kits. Guess it's still not a bad idea to have a fan in there....since I quit smoking last month we might possibly use it this year. (Couldn't use it before since it was too disruptive of ashtrays!)

Top of door height is 6'8", so you can usually drop down that far anyway. That gives you a few extra inches.

What you can try is taking the width and length of the room, adding it together and looking for a fixture that is about that diameter in inches. (so, if the room is 10' x 15' 10+15=25, change to inches (25") so, you can look for something in the vicinity of 2 feet in diameter.

I don't know where you are located, but there are lots of fans and chandies on my CL that would be great in your space.

Bravo for quitting smoking! That is awesome. So yes get yourself a ceiling fan. I don't know how we'd do without them in our family room/Gentleman's Parlor. It's shiny brass. I agree that a black or oil rubbed bronze finish would look great in your room. If a light kit is a necessity I suggest looking for something with a low profile.

Justgotabme, first let me say thank you for the compliments on the room/wing chairs. Sorry, should have said that in my first reply. I think I was so focused on what to do that it shot right by me.

Thanks also for the "quit smoking" cheer. It helps, every little bit helps. I stopped on January 18th and haven't had a single puff since then.....but I still crave them. I really do hope that someday I'll wake up and magically not care about them but until then it's a daily fight.

Palimpsest, if I add the dimensions of the room it comes to 31". Even so I could look for a 24" one and I actually have but, I still can't really find anything that looks right to me. The ones I like are mostly "uplights" and the lights themselves would be so close to the ceiling that they just don't seem to look right. The type that would make the most "sense" in that location would be something along the lines of a traditional chandelier with arms out on a single level and "candle" type lights. Those can be pretty wide (24"+) and yet not be too tall (14"-16") but when I photoshopped one onto a picture of the family room it just looked weird to me. I dunno.

Greenthumbfish, I have been watching the fans and chandeliers on CL. I've seen a few fans so far but none that would be an improvement over the one I currently have in that room. None of the chandeliers I've seen seemed right.

I have that same fan as justgot2bme but with a schoolhouse light kit in dark wood for my family room and in light wood in my lounge. It is great to have a fan option. IMHO, I think a less formal item such as a fan/light kit would look better than a chandelier.

Thanks for your thoughts vampiressrn. Yes, I've been looking at fans at LP and everywhere else I can think of...online and local. I've found a few (including that leaf bladed fan) that I do like so I guess I will stick with a ceiling fan in that room and just change it to a nicer one.

Yes, I have two Dobes! I did and didn't show. My girl is about 13 1/2 and she wasn't shown in conformation but I did compete in agility with her. She got her masters titles but, since she was my agility "learning dog" she didn't get her championship. She also worked as a therapy dog for about 8 years.

I showed my boy in conformation for about 2 1/2 years. He was the major reserve king. He's within standard but small for a male so judges kept giving him reserve and saying that he's so nice and would be wonderful when he "matured". Well, he's on the small side and just looked too small with all the other males that were topping out generall OVER the height standard. (That's not a disqualifying fault in Dobes and most males showing are either pushing right at the limit or over it.)

Anyway, I took my boy into agility instead and I'm pleased to say that he became the first male Dobe to earn two Master Agility Championships from the AKC. He placed in the top 20 list of Dobes for 4 years running and for one of those years was rated the #4 Dobe in the country of either sex by the AKC. (Agility is usually more difficult for male Dobes simply because they are usually larger than females and don't corner as well. Mason's a smallish male but generally larger than most females.)

Yes, I can talk all day about Whitney and Mason! Bet you're sorry you mentioned them.
