does anyone know requirements for support of counter?

I remember there was a thread on support for overhang on granite (at least I think there was!) ~ anyway, did it include corian?

I *thought* I remembered that the extension for corian counter overhangs needed less support than granite (?)

We want a curved island & I think I have drawn in a overhang of 18" at the deepest point ~ & I'm wondering if I will need legs or corbels ~~

anybody know???

Corbels should be fine. Are you getting new cabinets ? Your cabinet company should offer matching corbels- probably in 9" or 12". for the 18" point- you should use at least a 12" corbel. We go as much as 10" unsupported sometimes with granite. And your corbels should be @ 36" apart- no further if you can help it.

Need advice please. have island 10ft long island x 4ft 2" (50inches)wide. overhang will be 12 inches down the entire 10ft length. have 24"d base cabinets plus another 12"d set of base cabinets back to back. (36 inches of base cabinets that granite will sit on). question is how many support posts will be needed down the 10ft length of overhang ?(14inch overhang) Will one support post on each end be sufficient or do I need 3? can't add metal supports into top of cabinets, not enough space between the cabinet doors and top of cabinets. no room for corbels. support posts are the only option. would like one on each end vs adding one in middle. help!

Our raised bar on the peninsula will be 18" wide. About 5" of it will rest on the supporting wall; about 1" will overhang on the counter side; and about 12" will overhang on the other side where bar stools will be placed. It will be granite and therefore pretty heavy - its 7' long. We didn't want corbels to interfere with seating, so our granite fabricator is routing the underside of the granite and installing 1/4" steel plates under the bar (every 18" or so) as supports. The routing allows the steel plates to be flush with the underside of the bar. They will be visible only if one bends over and looks up underneath the bar. They charged nothing extra for doing this.

Were you in my area, I'd figure out how much a replacement piece would cost and charge you half with a $1,000.00 minimum. If I didn't get the mark removed and the finish matched to your satisfaction, no charge. Everybody wins. The good news is it looks like a resin burn only. It doesn't appear any of the quartz crystals have "popped" (turned white). Those can be drilled and filled, but make the repair trickier. Getting the burn out is the easy part. Getting the finish to match after the burn is gone is tough. Not at all a DIY or handyman project. This ain't granite or solid surface. Expect anyone who touches it to get you to acknowledge in writing that the top is ruined and that they can only make it better. You may want to settle for a less-than-perfect repair, especially if color/particulate match material is not available. You may have a discontinued estone; that may mean replacing all the tops to get perfection.

I will go check out that thread now ~

granite girl ~ just the info I was looking for ~ you said "we go as much as 10" unsupported sometimes" ~ hmmm, I haven't gone to read the thread buehl linked for me yet, but I guess I thought maybe with corian you could go 12" out before needing support ~ we are talking "projection" size & not length, yes? ~

Another thought just crossed my mind, since I see the recommention on this forum all the time for *minimum* of 15" for seating overhangs ~ does that mean they all have to have support? ~ so darn much to think about ~ my head hurts ~

also, my cabinets are not new ~ anybody know where on the internet I could look for paint-grade corbels?

Yes, most seating overhangs that meet the NKBA minimum guidelindes do need support. I have corbels under my 3cm granite counter that is 62"W x 15"D.

Sorry, no info on where to get paint-grade corbels. Have you checked Home Depot or Lowes? Lumberyards? No, not online, but might be of help...
