How to find estate sales?

We are furnshing our new home slowly - and we're missing those special, unusual pieces. We need to start checking antique stores, but I always hear good things about estate sales. How do people find out about these though? Internet searches pop up alot of noise...

I get our local newspaper. There's a heading for estate sales in the classifieds. Also, look in your phone book under Estate Sales. Call the businesses that do this type of work and ask to be put on their e-mailing lists for upcoming events.

I would take any suggestions of how to use those legs. They are quite big. I'll have to take some measurements and photo's up against something to help show their size. This is off the subject, but I have been having trouble with moles burrowing under one of my roses and leaving the roots dangling. I sort of used the idea of a plate border with some old plastic plates I found in the garage and buried them pretty deep to block off it's path. Seems to be working for now.

Kathe...so good to see you back posting again. That Estate Sale you went to is 'my kind of shopping'. What a huge collection! Love the Candlewick pieces you bought to add to your collection. It can get 'dangerous' when there are so many things you love AND especially when the prices are reasonable. I think you showed 'great control' !! lol I feel sad when I go to Estate Sales and see things being sold that were never used. I feel, (as the sale you went to) they had some plan in mind, but never got to follow through. Sometimes I imagine when I'm gone, and my 'suff' is sold off, people wondering if I had these grand dinners..or was I just a dish nut!! lol What a lovely gesture of Candy to show up for your father's viewing. jane

Nuts - I've met him several times and his wife twice so I wouldn't say that I really know him. However they are very easy to talk to - very open and congenial. The last time I spoke with him I was wearing an emerald ring that my DH had designed with our jeweler and when he complimented me on the ring I was thrilled. Granted it could have just been a savvy business comment to make a customer feel appreciated but it didn't sound that way - in fact, he noticed my ring and then blurted out "Now, that's an emerald!" When I thanked him he asked about the design and seemed genuinely impressed that my DH had drawn up the original sketch. Most of his jewelry is sterling with or without gold and many pieces have small diamonds or semiprecious stones. My favorite pieces are his bracelets. He has his annual sale in mid November and if you check his web site in October you'll find the dates. He usually does it on 2 consecutive weekends and it's rather an ordeal to attend. They have a sign in sheet and only a limited number of customers are allowed in the factory showroom at a time (maybe 25 or so) and depending on when you arrive you may have to wait a few hours. I'm lucky that both of my sons live within a few blocks so in past years I've parked at one of their apartments, took them out for breakfast and then walked over. Who knows - maybe you'll have a business trip next November.

@martinca_gw sunset zone 24 I love those red toile chairs! Great find. @Sueb20 I've never heard of Table Talk Pies?! In cleaning out my parents house last fall, we found a very old picnic basket in one of the attics. None of us kids remember ever seeing it. I'm thinking my parents must have had it as newlyweds and not sure if it could have come from one of their families. It's not sitting atop the antique icebox in our greatroom.

I find them listed on Craig's List and also sometimes see signs similar to the for sale signs while out driving. There are two types: ones done by an agency and ones done by family members. I find the best stuff at the ones done by an agency, though they may also charge a bit more as they are more aware of the value of an item. They are also willing to bargin, esp. if you offer to purchase multiple items. They are often done Fri/Sat/Sun, Friday being the best time to find that special item, Sunday the best time to get a great deal. It's a good idea also be clear what it is you are looking for as well as any requirements of your space in terms of size of the pieces as well as colors. If you have fabric or paint swatches bring them along.

That said, depending on where you live, Craigs's list can also be a great source for those special items as long as you search it regularly. I find between the two, I not only get a better price, but better quality.

In my area people are getting more savvy and posting estate sale signs rather than garage sale signs. Most of the estate sales here are run by companies, and they bring in a lot of things from other sales (and their stores) to fill out the place. Funny how the stinky, funky old houses with the FUGLY furniture happen to have Lalique figurines and sterling flatware. DH once saw a new Pioneer stereo set in a house that had obviously belonged to an elderly woman. Yeah, like SHE listened to Lawrence Welk on the 6 foot speakers!
