If everyone has eclectic tastes, what's so eclectic about it?

I was talking with a group of people recently, and virtually all of them claimed to have eclectic tastes, whether in music, books, art, whatever.

It got me to thinking that I've had this sort of conversation many times before, with many other people talking about how eclectic their tastes are. "Oh, yes, I enjoy classic rock, country, and quite a bit of classical music." And so on and on.

So what's so eclectic about it? As far as I can tell, most people enjoy a variety of things. Maybe they're just trying to say that there are things that you wouldn't guess about them, but that's true of everyone.

I remember a friend in high school, who was always telling us how special she was. Not in so many words, of course, but the implication was there. "Notice me!"

Have any of you noticed the thing about eclectic tastes? And they *always* use the word "eclectic," never "varied" or "diverse" or anything else. How eclectic is it if everyone uses the same word?
