Thoughts on a too small closet

I'm buying a place in Manhattan. Those who have lived here know that means getting used to less space and inadequate closets. I'm buying in a new building with many virtues, but closet design is not one of them. The MBR closet is a "walk in" that is 64" deep and 47" wide (with a regular door on the 47" wall. Really. And there's no realistic way to expand or reorient it. I'm thinking about

- double hanging one of the 64" deep walls

- putting 3 stacked shoe cubes (12" deep, 24" wide, appx 30" high) in the back corner

- hanging rods or bags that will hold scarves and the like on the other long wall.

Am a crazy? Any better ideas?

I feel your pain. Boston-area housing isn't big on closet space, either.

In this case, I would go directly to a couple of closet companies and see what ideas they can come up with. For me, it would be worth the extra money to get a good closet design consultant to get the most out of every single inch of that closet. And they would know about all the latest gadgets and gizmos that are available to utilize awkward space.

I'd also do a lot of thinking about storage in general for the entire apartment. What other closets are there and how will they be used? What do you need to store and where do you plan to store it? If there are two of you sharing the master bedroom, will both of you store all your clothing in that closet? Will out of season clothing go somewhere else? Will you use the back of the closet, which might be hard to get to, for little used items, and put the clothing of one person in a hall closet that has easier access?

It's not just about putting in enough clothing rods and shelves. It's about re-thinking storage for the entire home, and how best to use each space.

I would resist the temptation to outfit the closet with anything until I had figured out what I was storing in all the closets and storage areas in the house.

I think I got this idea from this forum. If I had a place that didn't have enough storage, I'd think about adding an entire wall of cabinets. I'd use one of the bigger rooms so it would be non-obtrusive and try to make it fit into the decor so it looked nice. You'd probably only shorten the rom by around 3' or so.

When you build with the WOW and 4k square feet, (which sounds like a lot but is not ) . It is NOT when you give starring role /NEARLY five hundred sq ft of it to a great room in front of the entry. Another couple hundred to a "hearth" area ......and what will happen here is nobody will actually gather in the great room, the fire will be the traffic stopper. Then you give each of three bedrooms a "walk in " closet. etc Result? you are left with the master suite that seems ( is) out of scale to the wow in the middle. Also small scale kid/guest bedrooms. The only answer to this plan is to lose a chunk of the "covered porch" square off the kitchen corner, bump the master suite to flush with the kitchen exterior wall.Change the window, to two on the covered porch wall and center the bed between. Plan to lose the tub for a decent shower too. Adjust bath and closet , center the entry to those with a right and left side for each. Anything else requires a total overhaul of the plan. That would mean a second story with two beds and baths on a second floor. ..........a completely different house. But this much under roof on one floor, with allocation to functions as is ? Yup......this is what you get Bump the master suite....or build something else.. ( square off that breakfast nook in any scenario.)

I'm stumped for where to put towels. I don't have an answer, but don't start the process until you know! It's small things like this that'll end up driving you crazy. The office must count as the 5th bedroom, so we'd like to keep it a separate room. My husband also works full-time remotely so he needs the space away from the noise and clutter for video meetings.. So you're using it as a bedroom ... and your husband is using it for work? If you were to make this space a closet, your husband would have the currently-allotted-for-washer-dryer closet space as a pocket office. If you can't move the washer/dryer to this area, I think I'd scrap the project and keep what you have now as closet space ... even though it will mean hauling laundry upstairs. I just need a desk chair for my laptop when I need to hide from my kids. Why not go with a small desk in the alcove /keep the closet for storage? What will you do at the small desk? If most of your desk-work would be on the computer, you might consider a small chest (for office-type storage) next to a comfortable chair and a lap-desk. Regardless of where your work space ends up, don't neglect outlets in the right places. The WC needs a pocket door for sure. Needs? I'd think through the reality of using this space -- it's small, and the door isn't going to close once a person's in the room. I don't think the vanity sinks are to scale in the drawing. Yes, 7' would allow for a single bank of drawers to be shared between spouses. I suggest going through your current items /measuring what you need to store in those drawers. Everything else goes in the linen closet (toilet paper, towels etc). A hamper in the lower half /storage above sounds good for the linen closet. The one problem is the toilet paper being stored across the bathroom from the toilet. We never had such a large bathroom before to consider two trash cans, haha! In my old house we had two trash cans in two bathrooms ... I'm all about efficiency and hated doing four trash cans every trash day. You might want to draw a to-scale bed and nightstands, and whatever else you will have in the bedroom. A good idea. I’d not want to always be going to the linen cabinet for stuff. Yes, drawer storage at the sink is essential.

it's a kids bath. Will always be a kids bath. We have a separate guest room with shower on a different floor (and no, we want our kids on the same floor). As for "getting to the shower from the 2nd bath", there is a 2nd shower in the "new" bathroom. Agreed, it might be tight with the door opening and the toilet, but I would have to get exact measurements for that. "few years convienence"? It would be like 6 years, and since most people stay in houses for around 7 years (we are at 11 and will be here for 10+ more, god willing)

Is that the only closet in the place? If not, I have to say that everything is relative. My house was built in 1938. the closet door is two feet wide and the closet is three feet wide and just a bit deeper than a hanger. I have two of those shelves that have a rod beneath. Suits and pants go on the top rod and blouses on the lower rod. We found a short bar at the Container Store that goes inside the door at the top (nothing showing on the outside) where I hang special clothes and scarves. There is a shoe rack on the inside lower part of the door and on the floor. Handbags go on the shelves. Out of season clothes go in a closet upstairs and I make the switch twice/year. You can also store clothes under the bed.

My issue is getting rid of clothes I no longer wear. If you have the space, adellabedella's idea is great. My rooms are all too small to give up that much space.
