How hard is it really?

So I've searched gone from store to store, website to website, catalog to catalog and yet can't seem to find a comforter that strikes my fancy. Seems to me the only option I have left would be to make one. There are always materials that I see that I like, I sure I can fashion something like a comforter.

So how hard is it really? I know how to sew, I just haven't done it in a really long time. I mostly use that iron on strip stuff when I need to do a hem. LOL Quick and easy. I guess the question I really have is what would I use to fill the inside? I've honestly considered going to the local discount store and buying a few cheapo comforters and just covering those with the material I like. Quick and easy. LOL

What about a duvet cover? I've made one of those and depending on how fancy you get, it's basically a pillowcase. I made one about a year ago and the hardest part was managing all the fabric. In the summer, we leave it empty and in cool weather I have a down comforter I put in it.

I've made both and I can attest to the fact that making a duvet cover is much simpler. Bonus points to the duvet cover because you can remove it to wash easily and make more than one to change the look of the bed. Easy to sew with flat bed sheets and close with velcro.

For making one from scratch you can use polyester batting that you buy at a place like Joanne fabrics or a blanket (use more than one layer for a richer look). You will then have to attach all the layers to keep the comforter intact. The hard way is to hand stitch a beautiful pattern like you see on handmade quilts - this is challenging to do well. A slighter easier method is to use a sewing machine to sew the layers together similar to what you see on commercially available quilts. Last you can take small single prick stitches to keep the layers together - I can't remember what these are called but they can create a really pretty look if done well.

There are a few big differences that you must consider between KA and Bosch. I have Bosch SHX65PO. KA has heated dry and Bosch does not. That means that you must use Jet-Dry with the Bosch and still, your dishes MAY or MAY NOT be dry at the end of the cycle. Although there are many happy Bosch owners out there, plenty seem to report having to air-dry after the cycle. With heated dry your dishes will be hot and dry (except for perhaps a few drops of water on the plastics). You just have to make sure plastic doesn't fall down and melt on the heater on the bottom. Whether or not you get heated dry is a matter of personal preference. Many Bosch machines are Energy-Star rated. They use less water and power, because of the no-heated-dry thing. Depending on where you live, you might get a significant rebate because of that. Plus energy/water savings, save the planet, etc. KA has larger racks and, IMHO, better rack tine placement. Bring your dishes to the store and try them. The Bosch says it fits X number of place settings, but if you look at the tines your plates may not fit because they are so close together. I have to load my Bosch using every other tine, and the top rack is noticeably smaller than the KA. The KA is a deeper machine. Make sure you have enough depth or it may protrude, especially if you plan on paneling it. Some owners will make their countertop overhang a bit larger to compensate, or fur out their cabinets and inch, to compensate for a panelled KA dishwasher. The Bosch is less deep and would fit a smaller space. My dishwasher is 47 decibels. It's fine. I can tell when it's running. I do hear sloshing water but it's a background sound and you can certainly stand next to it, talk on the phone or chat without being bothered at all. That was definitely not the case with my old Maytag which we had to shout over.

The cost per sq ft can vary tremendously, depending on what materials you choose even more than the cost of labor. Actual cost could be much lower than $165 or double that! Is the process of building hard? Yes, and the less you plan and decide in advance, the harder it is. Even if you don't get into the mechanics of building, and don't expect to do more than choose colors and finishes, there will be approximately 987,000 decisions to make that you never expected. Do your plans in advance with as many details as possible -- it's unfair to others (spouse, architect, GC, foreman, mason, HVAC, etc) to expect them to mindread what you want, and it's unfair to your budget to make decisions at the last minute. Last minutes decisions almost always cost you lots more than those made before the build began. Besides, your contract should be so well written that only a hurricane/flood/etc should cause the need for alast minute decision. Your husband is right that you aren't aware of all the difficulties, because NO ONE ever expects the build to be as problematic, time-consuming, detailed, and unexpected as every build actually is. Even experienced GCs with many houses under the belt can be caught by surprise --- by a boulder, or by lumber costs, or by a hurricane/ tornado/ blizzard/ flood, or by clever thieves, or even by his favorite expert crew going on vacation. Because of the stresses involved, your marriage will either deteriorate with remarkable speed, or improve slowly. Whichever happens, the couple that moves into the new house are not the same people they were when they first met the architect. Personally, I prefer people who have built a house; there's something about the process which adds a wonderful depth of character that no renter can achieve.

I agree if mom said SD should arrange it, then SD has a voice in visitation schedule that conflicts with activity. BM gave her the voice by saying she should be responsible for arranging her own activities. I agree. Let SD make the decision. DH & I were discussing a similar situation. SD told me she wants to play sports but the games would be on BM's weekends. Options that we discussed are asking BM to bring SD to games or let her stay the extra day with us and pick her up from the games. Either one would ensure 1) BM would get to have her mom attend her games. or 2) BM would make SD miss her games. or 3) BM would give up her weekends and time with SD. I know she'd love option #1 but fears she'd get option #2 or #3. She went as far as telling me that she wants her mom to be there but she'd still rather play, even if it means less time with her mom. She says her mom doesn't really spend much time with her anyways when she is at BM's house. Since DH sent BM the email about sticking to the order, he does not want to ask BM if she'd agree to let SD play a sport. I told him he can file a motion and see what the Judge says.. he does not want to take that route because it's timely and expensive. The other option would be to sign her up and let BM take him to court for scheduling an activity on her time... which we doubt she will do. (If she did, she would have to explain why she hasn't paid her support, doesn't visit as she is supposed to and then convince the court that it's not in her daughter's best interest to play a sport she wants to play and spend time with a mom that doesn't really want to spend time with her) Either way, you have to do whatever is necessary for the child's best interests. If you have to go back to court so she can participate.. do it. She only gets one chance to be a teen and it should not be sacrificed to make mom happy or be mom's babysitter. Dad is custodian and he needs to decide what is best for his daughter.

The thing that will make it go easier is having an adequate jointer to flatten the edges of the boards. If you are able to use thicker stock and have it thicknessesed to the finished dimension after the glue up, it is really simple, because rough alignment at the edges is all you have to worry about. In your case with maple, you have chosen a sort of difficult to work wood, because it tends toward tearout when jointed/planed, so thickness sanding is a better mode. If you are making one wide board out of finished lumber and believe that you can get invisible joints without some degree of surfacing afterwards, you must have a magic touch. I have been making 15" wide glue-ups all summer for a furniture-building sideline, and while I have an 8" long-bed jointer, all I have is a 12" planer, so I have been using the ancient technique of the "rubbed glue joint" (with hot hide glue). The rubbed joint is cool because no clamping is needed, but the edges must be perfectly mated and the hot glue just right. p.s., I used some clamps anyway, to make myself feel better, and because this is a new technique for me, and a bad joint was not an option. I personally like to match my batting to my fabric which gives a better foundation for future cleaning. Silk for silk, cotton for cotton or wool if you want the warmth, and poly if I use a synthetic.

You can get a spray on glue (at a quilting store) that just temporarily tacks it to the outside layers and then you can do a machine quilting on it, but don't try if you don't have a quilting foot. The layers will walk on you without it and it will look like goober on one side. (Screws up the tension). But it's not hard to do :)

Buy a duvet which is similar to (but not the same as) a comforter but usually covered in white cotton fabric and filled with down, altho you can get synthetic ones also. Then make the duvet cover as previously suggested.

Duvets can be expensive but IMO feel better than comforters and can last a long time if kept covered.
