last wallpaper removal question

We are now down to the bottom layer and some residue in all 5 rooms plus the hallway. My question is that when I scrape the residue off I am left with this mud like substance. I assume this is the glue residue. How do I get it all off of my textured plaster walls so I can prime and paint? More DIF? TSP? Hot water?

Looking forward to completing this arduous task and moving on to more fun things like electrical.

I'd use lots of hot water till nothing visible is left. If your going to prime I'm not sure I'd bother with the TSP. TSP on textured walls can just as bad as to remove as the leftover gunk from the wallpaper.

I just scrubbed mine w/ Soilax and then water. It all came off really easily (well, pretty easily)

I'm not clear if you've replaced the vanities, which do need replacing if you're going to the expense of new granite, sink, and faucet. I don't see why you'd want to make those permanent, expensive changes based around a design scheme of outdated peach wallpaper.

Use Easysand setting compound. By a longer setting time like Easysand90 if you are inexperienced. It is closer than premix mud and will not introduce as much moisture into the wall. As you learn how to patch the repairs you can switch to Durabond. It is as hard as the original plaster, and very hard to sand. It must be applied and smoothed correctly. This takes practice. Easysand was introduced because of the difficulty of sanding Durabond. Lightly mist the base coat of plaster to improve adhesion of the patch if you use Easysand or Durabond.

I agree....stripping wallpaper from plaster is a whole different animal than if it were on drywall. Plaster is like rock, really hard to damage. The entire reason everyone thinks that removing wallpaper is such a nightmare is because we started hanging it on top of drywall as if it were plaster. Don't forget that even though the wallpaper may seem stuck to you and your professional painter, adding the weight of mud and paint may help it come loose and/or bubble everywhere over time. Painting over wallpaper should really only be done as a last resort.

Just finished removing the wallpaper in and repainting our kitchen. The old paper was difficult - even with copious scoring DIF was making no headway through the thin top vinyl layer. And it was next to impossible to 'peel' this layer to get down to the glue/paper layer. So I went and rented a commercial grade wallpaper steamer. Quite a bear to work with, but worth it. I wound up having to make 2 passes as I worked. The 1st over the printed vinyl layer was sufficient to get that layer to delaminate enough to peel cleanly and quickly. The 2nd pass got the paper and the glue. On the glue/paper layer I found it was better to wait @ 30 to 60 seconds for the area to cool a bit before scraping. You have to be very careful with the commercial grade machines since they get very hot. I needed that cool down time to prevent damaging the original coat of paint beneath the wallpaper. How much wait time will depend on how hot your steamer gets, as well as how the wall was prepped prior to the wallpaper application, and the quality of the paper and glue. You'll find out fairly quickly how long you need to wait before scraping.

Most old glue is readily dissoved with about a cup, of vinegar in a gallon of warm water. Use a plastic scrubby or a stiff brush if it is tough to remove. Change your water frequently.

I've neen doing this for a month on flat walls. Use 2 gallons very warm water, I tbl fabric softener, 2 cup white vinegar. Start near the ceiling and do a 3-4 foot wide area at a time, to the floor. Sponge it on heavily, then use the scraper to skim off the goop, then reapply the solution and use a strong scrubby sponge that they sell in paint/wallpaper shops to get all the little scraps off. The key is to have a clean water bucket to rinse the sponge and scrubby pad frequently. You don't want to smear dirty, pasty water on the clean wall. Then rinse with clean water. Feel the wall with your bare dry fingertips a couple of minutes later, if you find a sticky spot, rinse again. I guess you can you a stiff tire scrubbung brush too.
