So sorry about the inspector. I'm in CA too and I had trouble with the inspector for the pool build. It's like their reduced business is making them real you know whats. I found even if what they request defies common sense and every know building practice, you have really no recourse.

The city/county believes them! It will delay your project and you likely won't win. I'm with your contractor. Just do it. That inspector will be with you throughout the project and you want the final sign off.

I agree, do what the inspector says. You really can't win with the City Hall bureaucracy. Some of these guys have real delusions of power....except that in so many cases, they actually DO have the power to totally disrupt your remodel.

I am a building and electrical inspector in illinois. Did the inspector state why he wanted a set of framing plans, did something change? There are structural things HO don't usually understand but the contractor should and they just decide to move a wall that could be supporting the roof and tell you its fine. Ask the inspector for direction and why he wants what was asked and that will help you understand. This has happened to me where the contractor decides to change the plans and I ask for a sign off.

Reguardless of the inspectors rep. he/she should still work to help you understand. If I work with a good contractor I'm great and when i work with questionable ones and I am a hard nose .....

I'm going to reiterate a point I make every time someone tries to ignore the inspector and/or structural engineer. Our California building codes are strict for a very good reason: in our 6.5 earthquakes, 50 people die but in other countries, 50,000 people die in similar earthquakes. I hate to be crass in bringing up death, but we live in earthquake country. I'm not saying that you're one of those trying to ignore the inspector, so please don't take offense. I also suggest (a) redoing the plans to please the architect/engineer, and (b) holding a meeting onsite (or at city hall if your inspector insists) to let your architect/engineer tell the inspector why they're right and he's wrong. They're professionals who understand the UBC.

thanks all. we ended up 5 weeks behind due to all of this but quite honestly my GC and his framer had never in 40 some years run into this problem before. Another inspector got assigned (due to my GC going down to city inspector's office and complaining w/ a list of them , also to find another couple and their GC complaining about the same inpsector) They sent a new one he agreed w/ what was done previously , unfortunately too late and 8 grand later, not to say could be a lawsuit here, but he passed we moved forward the old inspector came back again, and he tried ot give us a hard time and my GC didn't back down this time so far no problems..

So honestly it's one thing to listen to your inspector if they are right and other times there is that one that is just using his power to control a situation or do whatever he wants which is unfair to innocent people We had no problem listening to what they had to say or do, but when we were being told this had never happened before we couldn't believe this was happened to us.
