Sewer gas smell in new bathroom
Comments (1)Residue can accumulate in the top of the drain above the trap, esp. where the overflow meets with the drain. Occasionally, I pour a tiny splash of bleach down the drain, then let it sit for a bit. That takes care of the smell for a couple months, then we repeat. Another method would be to remove the pop-up, then scrub the drain walls with a bottle brush...but that can be messy if you remove the pop-up lever to do it,...See MoreCast iron stack emmitting sewer gas smell
Comments (1)The stack should have a cleanout at the base of the stack before it goes into the floor. The cleanout plug may not have a good seal. Also lead and oakum were used on the joints, the lead may not be sealing properly. Hope that helps, Dan Martyn...See MorePlease help. Sewer gas smell only at night, only January-March
Comments (6)If "gas meter thing"plumber brought is for detecting natural gas I believe you are on the right track. The utility companie's line might be leaking with gas following your servce line into dwelling. Adding propane to raise line pressure during coldest part of day is common pratice. If you feel compelled to help plumber locate the problem try this. Fold a clean cotten cloth several times and hold it against outlet of grill tank. Make certain to keep tank upright then open valve for 2 or 3 secounds. Does cloth smell similar to odor in basement?...See MoreSewer smell from bathroom sink drain mystery
Comments (46)Thank you David! When having this house renovated post purchase, much of the bathroom was gutted and the sink I had installed is one I bought new some years before and was waiting to use (American Standard Standard Collection Console sink with oval glass shelf.) Because the works underneath are totally exposed I bought the best chrome P-trap and fittings a local plumbing supply house had. In a month or so I'll have my plumber back to install a pump for my utility sink, and he will need to add another vent stack I believe, so I'll have him see if the sink is connected to the bath vent, and if the vent has any blockage. I'll ask him about the air admittance valve - thank you so much for that information!...See Morehousekeeping
