Replacing Individual Tiles in Marble Backsplash...Possible??

We had a marble backsplash installed recently and unfortunately, the contractor that installed it did not have a very artistic eye. He used several tiles that I would have discarded (small cracks, off coloring, etc.). I'm kicking myself for not being there to watch him like a hawk but I had to go away for a business trip while the splash was going up and now, what's done is done (it's already been grouted and sealed). Is it possible to crack out an individual tile without damaging the ones around it? I have a lot of tile left over and would want to replace several of them. I know it's doable with ceramic but wondering how difficult it is with white carrara marble tiles. Anyone know? And what tools would I need if I attempt to DIY?

Why is the contractor not doing this? I would make him do it or have him pay someone else.

Yes, the contractor that installed the splash should be fixing this. Unfortunately, that's not happening. It's a long story and I'll spare the ugly details. I'll never use him again!

I was in HD yesterday, and I took one of the special order boards up to the counter to pay the deposit and take it home with me to sample. The lady said, "it's your lucky day- I just had a woman return 60 sf of this and since it's special order, we have to discount it to get it off the floor.". They were the MS international 12x12 marble tiles (in grey something...can't remember the exact name of the tile). Anyhow, it had been marked down to 1.73 sf!!! I about died, and then I bought all of it :). Ayhow, all that to say that yes, I think you can return it even if it's special order. I too am in the backsplash decision making- I fell in love with a oblong marble tile that was 17 sf- my budget is 8, but maybe with my super cheap marble floor in the bathroom I can get the backsplash I want- good luck to you!!

I know this is an old thread. But I know I read old threads when I am trying to make a decision. We put soapstone and marble and wood floors in our kitchen in 2007. So we are going on 8.5 years and I LOVE IT ALL. My kids have grown up with it. We don't baby any surface. To be clear, my style is not slick and modern. I have antiques and an older home so I like traditional materials and I don't mind a "lived with patina"-but having said that I don't think my stone has much of a patina at all. The big island is soapstone. It has a few scratches-mostly from house-sitters and the kids dragging heavy pots across it or cutting directly on it like a cutting board.. But if I oil it (which I do maybe 2-3 times a year) they fade. I did search for a long time and I picked a soapstone that was know to be harder than others with minimal white veining-so this could make a difference. I think we could have the top polished/honed again and it would look brand new. But I think it looks fine. Maybe in another 8 or 9 years. I love it everyday! The carrara marble is around the sink in the most used food prep area of the kitchen. It is honed. I just had a repair company come out (only because we had to do some other work in the kitchen and hubby asked about it) and they honed it again and cleaned it up. It looks brand new (I didn't think it looked bad before). There are a few little pits and chips that cant be fixed-but I don't think they are that noticeable. I just sealed it after the guy left. It was never really sealed before. I have gotten a few stains and I have always gotten them out. I have had etching but I learned how to get that out myself (I use sandpaper-yes and it has worked beautifully for me). I love it every day! We are about to ignore all practical advice again and put marble in our master bathroom. I hope we have as much luck with it as we did in the kitchen. In the next few weeks I hope to post photos of our 8.5 year old finishes.

lynn2006 - Thank you! The photos really don't do it justice. Such a calm, serene stone with a cottage/coastal look to it. My DH likes it, too; I think it's both masculine & feminine. Yes, the fact that it won't etch is huge. They won't guarantee it won't etch but if it does, the pattern & subtle texture will help to mask it. Marble etching doesn't bother me; more so, my DH. So this stone works for both of us. I love that it is not a polished stone; it looks so different from the other Sea Pearl slabs I was considering primarily because of the matte finish. Fingers crossed the quote doesn't blow the budget! holly-kay & romy - I appreciate your input re your sinks! Now I have that decision to make. :) My DH likes stainless; I like the apron look. Our fabricator said he makes a cost-efficient "faux apron" sink by using a stainless steel undermount sink with an apron front made out of the counter material. He's going to provide photos of previous jobs; says it looks nice. That might be the way to go for us; a nice compromise.

People have more discretionary income than they once did. When my parents and when I was looking at houses, one took what one got and made the best of it. I knew some pretty wealthy people and I can only remember one friend from when we lived in LA (she lived way up the hill in Beverly Hills) who remodeled her kitchen, and a friend in St Louis who had the world's smallest kitchen, 3 children and entertained and cooked nearly every single weekend. People just didn't spend money on such thing! They MADE them work! Now, a 5 year old kitchen in Darien CT is considered a "total gut job". I redid my kitchen of 32 years last year. Was it useable? Yes! Had I made it attractive? Yes? Could it be improved? Absolutely yes! And a new kitchen was on my bucket list, which at then age 72, seemed to have some "time relevance"! I have NO REGRETS! Moving my refrigerator made an enormous difference both in the function of the kitchen and in its appearance. When the main entrance into the kitchen feels "cramped" (because it IS cramped!", then that colors one's impression of the entire kitchen which was NOT cramped at all! Now, the kitchen appears quite spacious for an 11 x 15 ft kitchen! It has tons of counter space, good separation of work areas for multiple cooks, and the replacement of bottom cabinets with big drawers was worth doing even if everything else had worked perfectly. But redoing my kitchen was far from a "necessity". It was a luxury to which I treated myself and I have no regrets. I think at my age, I "earned" it by living for so many years with multiple kitchens that were anything but ideal. But even in them, I cooked fabulous meals and I never was beside myself every single time I went into my kitchen. It's all a mindset today.

In my experience, "small cracks and off-coloring" are inherent in stone products, especially in small tiles like those used for back splashes. I returned an entire order of marble subway tiles because so many of them were like that. According to the supplier, those things are to be expected, and I was charged a fairly hefty re-stocking fee for the privilege of returning them.

IMHO, a disclaimer should be included in every tile contract that spells out the qualities of natural stone products so that customers aren't surprised after their installations are in. Going through the tiles before the installer arrives and getting rid of any that you don't like is a lot easier than removing them after they have been installed and grouted, especially with a material like marble where removing one can easily chip the one next to it. Some people LIKE the variation in natural stone tiles and wouldn't want the "off-color" tiles to be tossed, so I am wondering if it is fair to blame the installer here? No disrespect intended here, just food for thought.

It is not fair to blame the installer. He is there to install tile not sort them. "Artistic eye" is completely subjective, especially with natural stone.

Yes, you can do this yourself. I'd recommend purchasing a Rotozip tool with the stone blade attachment and vacuum option.

Cut through the tile about 1/8" from the grout line, getting as close as you can to the keepers without touching. Cut another horizontal line or two in the tile, insert a screwdriver or chisel into the cut and twist it until the tile breaks out.

Removing the thin set may be more trouble than it's worth; it depends on how easily it comes out. If there isn't much lippage, I'd just silicone the replacement tiles in place.

I had a similar experience but I put part blame on myself, and some on installer. I should have reviewed each tile meticulously as marbile tile varies greatly -- and easily chips at edges. Some tiles were not flush like others, which I understand stone tile can have different thickness. Pre-selecting the tiles one by one for the installer is a must.

I had installer replace a few tiles, which turned out to be 12 tiles as when he chipped out the tiles, it made the tiles nearby chip at edges. Then the thinset ripped out the drywall so that became a mini disaster. Installer was able to replace the partial drywall areas. It was not an easy job, and something I would never attempt as DIY. Even at Tile store, I had to go through many boxes to find tiles suitable to my taste. Some were yellowish, chipped at edges and corners. That comes with natural stone tile -- it can crack and chip easily.

What did you end up doing? I am in the same predicament with mosaic marble - I did actually hand pick and QA the mosaics, but I want someone else to redo and continue parts of the tiling and it will involve taking off some tiles…
