Hardwood in a powder room?

We're getting ready to renovate our kitchen and have decided to put in the same hardwood flooring as we have in the adjoining dining room. There is a small two piece powder room (5'6" X 5'6") off of the kitchen which I would also like to continue with the hardwood. The powder room gets minimal use. Some flooring sales people are telling us not to do it (because of hygiene reasons? -- it's gotta be better than carpet LOL!) We don't feel that moisture will be an issue any more than it would be in the kitchen. I'd like your input. If you went into a powder room with hardwood flooring would you be put off? For those who have hardwood in a powder room, please tell me your experience.

Well, I wouldn't be put off, but I just did the same thing. Powder room between the kitchen and DR. We took up the tile in the Kithen and powder room, the carpet in the family room and put the same HW in all three places.
We already had a leak, some kind of clog in the basement that backed up to the powder room. We were home, and cleaned it up quickly. No issues.

I think it looks fabulous and we are very happy we did it.

I have it in one of my half baths (15 years)and have had no problems. It is a very light use bathroom.
You're right , it wouldn't be any more problems than in a kitchen.I did have problems in my kitchen.
I had a slow leak in my ice maker line and didn't know about it until the boards in front of the fridge started cupping.

I had the same problem. Had old strip flooring that was over 100 yrs old. At one point someone replaced a section with 3/4 thick wood floor but you wouldnt know until it was tore up. When I laid all the flooring an got to the the hallway I was up about 1/2 in. I shimmed up an 1/8 in then stripped a blank of the new floor on the table saw to build a thin transition piece. There is a slight raise but everything is the same level and looks nice. So in short just use a reducer.

Yeah one finished room. (Of course still full of dust) They finished our bedroom yesterday. Still have to enventually come back and do the closet, but for now have moved on to the great room. camlan..Their doing the same thing here. Running the wood with no seams from room to room. I hope ours eventually "glow" right now they just glow of dust, but it still is looking nice. judydel. I like to buy rugs at TJ Max HomeGoods. Patty Cakes.. Oh no. The stairs is what inspired us to do this hardwood job. We just finished painting the stairs yesterday. The carpet that was on the stairs was old, dirty and ugly. It had to come up. My kids are teenagers, so hopefully safety wont be an issue. We'll see if they become too loud, etc., we can always eventually add a runner to them. beth..Your floors, rugs and house are beautiful. It is probably fine to put engineered wood in a powder room. I have engineered wood in my kitchen and the occasional drips and drops clean up well. That said, having tile in a bathroom that is contiguous to wood is a perfectly valid design choice. I have wood everywhere except the master bath and the guest bath. My bathroom floors are basket weave marble and I think they actually look better than wood would have especially with other design choices in my bathrooms. Some people do have wood in their bathrooms. I wouldn't be comfortable because I don't know the toilet habits of people who are using them and would like to be able to clean thoroughly if need be. I realize that marble is considered to be higher maintenance but it can still be steam cleaned occasionally and cleaned/sanitized in a way that even engineered wood floors can't be.

We also have hardwood in our Powder room and it gets heavy use. I love it and no issues here either.

The flooring people are totally wrong...My house was built in 82 and has the original red oak floors....including in the small powder room LOVE it!

The fir floors in my bathroom are 90 years old and still going strong - and this is the only bathroom in a 3-bedroom house. Love it, and it's a breeze to clean; no hideous grout lines to discolor or catch dirt. :)

As long as your toilet does not leak or huge amounts of water are being splashed the wood floor would be a great choice.

I think it would be very nice. I have seen it quite often in homes of friends, family, etc. I have never heard of them having any problems. Now, another post a few days ago was asking about installing HW in a bathroom with a tub and shower that would be used daily!!! No way I would do that!!!

I read a suggestion, after I already continued the HW into our powder room from the kitchen, to have the toilet mounted on a piece of marble. That way the toilet & it's moisture was not directly on the wood.

I would have investigated that option had I known about it in time. As it turns out, we haven't had any problems with the HW in our powder room.

Had it for 10 years in my previous home because for the location it just made sense and looked good. Never had a problem.

In my current home and my last home we had HW in the powder room. No problems at all.

Here is my formal powder room w/ hardwood. It's funny because I don't think of a powder room any other way than w/ hardwood, obviously not finished. So, yes, go for it.

We have hardwood floors in a half bath. I use Bona Kemi cleaners. No issues so far. Worse case scenario something happens I just cut the floor out from the door way in, install a threshold and then tile.
