2 questions about stainless sinks

#1:I am about to order a lustertone Elkay sink that I have not seen in person. Can anyone tell me what this finish looks like? It seems the other sinks I looked at, like Franke, are all very shiny and this looks like a satin-y finish.

#2: My pulls and knobs will be the dark oiled bronze. Am I correct to assume that my faucet needs to be brushed nickel to match the sink and not a dark one that will match the pulls? Has anyone seen this combination? yes, I'm a little clueless!

Good question mrsbridges I was going to ask one similar so I'll watch this thread. I have a stainless C-Tech sink and currently have a brushed nickel faucet and it looks great but I have not chosen my hardware and am leaning toward the ORB because I have honey maples cabinets with coffee glaze. I'll be interested to hear the opinions and what you decide!

See the link on the stainless composition. IME if you want a perfect match then stick with the same brand. But a blend can be fine, too. It depends on each piece. The thing about the finishes is that the highest end faucets are all metal and more popular priced faucets may be nickel coating on another material. The weight of the faucet will let you know, generally, how much metal it has. The heavier the better. But the process for creating the finishes is quite good and its rare to hear of a faucet finish wearing badly. If there isn't info on the finish then I wouldn't use the polish, just a microfiber cloth with whatever cleaner the manufacturer recommends for their products. My satin nickel faucets clean up really well with a microfiber cloth. No babying required. Here is a link that might be useful: composition of stainless steel

Thanks for the responses! live wire oak, excellent point. The cabinet depth is 24", so that would mean I would need to adjust the dimensions to 66"x 25.5", if a 1.5" overhang is standard. I hadn't thought about that when I asked for the quote. What I want to do is match the marble countertops overhang in the rest of the kitchen. Maybe I should ask my GC if that is the amount of overhang he plans for the marble. Also, do you know if a #4 brushed finish is good? I don't want it to look too shiny; what I have in mind is more a commercial kitchen finish. What finish are you asking for, live wire oak and wallycat? (and any others who have/are getting stainless?) Also, are you getting it the same way as I was quoted, with a MDF substrate and the SS laminated onto that, or is there a better construction? I agree w/AlwaysFixin here too! With the batwing design, you have to be very careful when moving the faucet...you can't just move it from one sink to another while running...you have to turn it off first, move it, then turn it on again. Additionally, the sink bowls are too small to be very useful...especially as a main sink. Regarding size...for a prep sink, you shouldn't have a sink smaller than 12" square...and 15" - 18" is better. For a main sink, you really need one much bigger. We have a corner 15-3/4" square prep sink (Kohler K-3345) and I would not consider anything smaller (it's in a 36" corner sink base). Our main sink (Ticor S405D) is two bowls - one side is only 10-1/2" wide, but it's used primarily for soaking utensils and filling things...not for washing or rinsing dishes. The larger bowl is 21-1/2" wide...a wonderful size...big enough of our largest cookie sheets & largest frying pan + handle. It's also 9" deep + the 3cm granite depth = 10-1/4" deep. Great all around. This sink fits in a 36" standard sink base. If you must have a corner sink for your main sink, I would think seriously about a single bowl for maximum size...and I'm not normally a single-bowl proponent! BTW...our prep sink is 18-gauge & our main sink is 16-gauge...both are fine.

I have the Elkay Lustertone and it's very nice - not the bright shine, but kind of satiny (which I prefer).

When I asked a KD about matching my faucet to my sink or to my hardware, she said it's better to match it with your counter surface - hummm. We bought a Moen SS faucet and have pewter hardware, so it's all similar.

No, your faucet does not have to match the sink. I've seen pics of SS sinks with ORB faucets and they look nice.

Elkay sinks tend to have more of a grainy or grooved looking finish to them. Have you logged onto their web site? I believe they actually list a description of their finishes. Most decorative plumbing showrooms have Elkay on display. Call around so you can actually see in person. Now as for matching your faucet to your sink or to the rest of the kitchen, I would match the faucet with your accessories (cabinet hardware). It's a much richer look if your faucet, soap dispenser, air gap and whatever sink top items you have will blend in with the rest of the kitchen. Do you have stainless appliances as well? Carleen

I am not a fan of stainless. My stove will be a black lacanche, not sure about fridge. Island counter will be slate, perimeter counters will be wood. Cabinets white.
I can't picture a black faucet and spray with a stainless sink!Does anyone have a picture?

I asked something similar a while back about faucet matching sink and the general consensus was the they don't have to match. AND none of it has to match your pulls and knobs.

if you look through the FKB you'll see that most everyone has multiples of metals in their kitchens. I think what matters most is how it all flows.
