I know, Bronwynsmom--- I had the same impulse. Only I LOVE color. So maybe this is the kind of place I need for a getaway. That's an idea.... one needs something completely different. I do love the blank walls, although obviously old wood makes for a better blank wall than drywall, lol.

Walked right past it while in Mousehole ("Mowz'l") almost a year ago. What a delightful cottage, and the setting ... well, let's just say it doesn't get much better than that! Thanks for sharing.

By the way, if anyone wants to view another sweet Mousehole cottage, take a look at the link. We almost rented this place, but opted to stay in nearby Paul, where parking is less problematic. I just love The Chandlery though ... ::sigh::

That is way too drab for me! Combined with the perpetually cloudy skies of England I would feel depressed living there. Bring on some color!

The light is "different" in temperate Cornwall though. Clearer, cleaner, somehow. I don't think The Oystercatcher would be as drab as some might think -- or as it might be if it were in another area of the country.

ETA: I am totally in love with the style of fridge shown in The Oystercatcher kitchen. So very retro! (However, the brand name has a very different connotation here in the states, and I think I'd be hard pressed to not want to remove those 4 little letters from the front ... ;-)) The cottage we rented in Paul had one in a sort of duck-egg blue shade, and it was precious.

I like it-love the exterior and kitchen, but somehow,most of it it just feels so "catalogue" to me and not authentic.

I love color, and I think I must also NEED color, because I find those all white and gray rooms unsettling. 'Makes me feel twitchy.

It's a self-catering holiday rental, so it definitely has more of a "catalogue" feel, since that will appeal to the masses. There are so many of these little granite fisherman's cottages in that part of the country that have been gutted and completely re-fitted as rentals. When we were looking for a self-catering cottage in Cornwall, we wanted cleanliness and modern convenience, with a certain charm to the decor ... not necessarily authenticity. We'll be traveling to Suffolk next month, and while many of the rental cottages do contain their original half timbers, we still sought out places with a toilet upstairs and downstairs, and the kitchen had to be fully equipped with all the "mod cons". We just said "no" to authentic 16th century living.

Sunny, i am not talking about modern amenities, but there is no feeling of being in Cornwall, imho. When I rent in France, I always know I am in a French house. They are individual and unique and definitely do not look like they are catering to people who would be happy living inside RH or PB, etc. That has nothing to do with updated baths or kitchens, although those are simpler, but still have what I need. Now really, you didn't seriously think that I meant 16th c. living, did you? That would just be silly :)

I prefer Sunny's over the first house as it has some warmth to it from the timbers. That first house, while well done, just leaves me feeling cold...I think I'd need a sweater on even in August.

No Cyn, I didn't really think you were referring to medieval living when you said "authentic." I guess I'm just curious as to what you would expect to find in a self-catering Cornish cottage? While the muted tones may not appeal to everyone, the decor itself was very evocative of the area to me. Although the photos are obviously staged and do have a catalogue feel about them, I have to say that The Oystercatcher is outfitted better than most of the rentals we looked at. At least the owner made an effort with the decor ... A few that we looked at were downright dismal.

KSWL, You are right, this is just my thing. Love it. And the setting! Oh and the name! Mousehole. The English are so much better at naming then the McMansion Development folk; they have that downmarket irony thing perfected in England.

Too bad we still don't own "our" beachhouse.

After several attempts at playing armchair architect, I took everyone's advice and concentrated on the even "funner" stuff, soft goods, colors, photos of things I liked etc.

But for a while now I have stopped playing "beachhouse" at all. I am beyond frustrated with the sellers about resolving the access issue (our driveway is not all on our land). I can't imagine why this hasn't been resolved when we went under contract at Thxgiving! Of course DH points out that it took 6 years for them to subdivide the property...
We are considering another possibility but we need clarification on how close to the ocean we can build on that one...

Frustrating.

Thought of you immediately when I saw the photos :-) Sorry to hear about your contract woes but with your penchant for exhaustive research not worried you will ever get the short straw.

You've been having fun, LOVE Deer Valley and stay frequently with friends in Deer Crest. not for skiing but for Sundance and I actually prefer it in summer. Park City is like a set for a western.

I do hope you get a beach property soon so we can all enjoy "helping" you with it!

Mtn, we were at Park City a couple of weeks ago and skied at DV one day. Love it out there. Always eat too much too. Sorry for the snags with the property.
