What are you reading these days?

There have been some great book recommendations on this forum lately. Some are specifically about all the stuff that becomes clutter, or the marketing that gets us to buy more stuff. Some are a little more decorating/architecture oriented. Some are about life choices in general. All have some bearing on the way we organize our stuff. So, have you read any good books lately? Have an oldie-but-goodie to recommend?

Glanced through the article and will read it more thoroughly later. I love this kind of stuff.

I have been doing mostly the Simplicity reading and the reducing clutter reading. Plus I got some of the other books recommended on this site.

One book that I had on my bookshelves is called "House as a Mirror of Self" I just took it down to re-read as I got and read it some time ago. My only memories from it are what I would call...Mine, His and Ours. Certain areas in the home are one or the other. Mostly how we see the area and how tolerant we are of another invading our space. I will let you know more about it when I read it again.

The books you just borrowed sound very good too. I will be interested to see how you like them. Thank you for your recommendations on other posts too! I will be reading some of them too. So much to read, so much to de-clutter and so much fun to have! I hardly have time to sleep anymore!

Sorry...I am overreacting to the "Emotional Architecture" article.
In my years as a designer, before I put pencil to paper the first time, I routinely dragged my clients through a similar process of what, in the trade, is called "programming." I believe absolutely that if you spend enough time asking and answering the right questions, the project will pretty much design itself.
People do know what they want...you just have to help them dig down through their misunderstandings and half-knowlege and social anxiety about how to get there, and guide them to make the right decisions. And you have to continually reassure them that all the "you can do this yourself!" hype is not true, that they really do have taste in there, that design really is a serious professional discipline, and that they shouldn't expect themselves to be able to do what you and the experienced tradespeople can do.

That was interesting,I will be using the computer to look up things in my free time too. I have tons of books but they've been reread too much as it is. It sucks that these bugs and pathogens can wipe out a country full of a particular tree. If oak wilt gets big like that I'll have a nearly empty yard.Maybe the white oaks will be okay. One thing though, I can see fertilizing to help vigor but wouldn't that make the foliage more attractive to leaf eaters?You hear alot of conflicting things about fertilizing. I bought a big sack of powdered seaweed, it's supposed to have trace minerals and good for all plants. I read the " nutrients" and it has 9% sodium.Sorry for dragging on, I'm gonna see what the soil, mulch forum think of the seaweed, there is some interesting stuff on there, too. poaky1

Often the beliefs are the spring that provides water which fills the well of action. Not always. One needs to examine one's beliefs and actions, from time to time, to see whether they line up, or are at cross purposes. Often helpful if one runs the thought by someone who loves one, for sometimes we tend to fool ourselves (in that sometimes one's self is the easiest one of one's acquaintances to fool). Also, such self-examination, shared with a loved one, may help to examine some of the interactions with that person, where there were some misunderstandings. ole joyfuelled

Finished up Spook by Mary Roach, an in-depth and irreverant look at the world of mediums, ghosts etc. Very funny (as she always is) and interesting, but more of a pick-up and put-down book really so it took a while to finish. Finished The People of Privilege Hill by Jane Gardam, a book of short stories (one or two featuring old characters like Old FILTH etc.). Most of the stories were very well written, but there were a few slightly odd ones in there. I think it was a bit of a vanity project for the author... Then an ILL came in: Fire on the Mountain by Anita Desai, a novel with absolutely beautiful descriptions in it of the hill station in North India where the book is located. There is a crusty grumpy old lady who lives there, glad to be alone when suddenly one of her daughters dumps her own daughter (the protag's great granddaughter) there all summer. It's how the relationship develops (or dosen't) between the two generations. Really enjoying this one bc the writing is just so good. Then, as a NF read, I have another book by Sue Hubbell, a series of essays (I think) about her country living and keeping bees. I really enjoyed her other book, so am hoping this will be similar. I also need to switch off One-Click on ama. It is absolutely far too easy to buy a book right now when I have a slow mo at work...

Notes on "The Go-Between" by L. P. Hartley (1953). "The past is a foreign country; they do things differently there." Well written, this novel focuses on the memory of an elderly man who is reflecting on the summer of his twelfth year which he spent at the home of a wealthy family of one of his school friends. (Another bildungsroman, it seems.) It's contrasted strongly with his own home life (which is poorer) and Leo, the protagonist, is acutely aware of the "right" things to do and say. It's also a balance between the social codes of his boarding school (which he and his friend attend) and what is appropriate for this summer visit. It's a rather fraught novel, I think, which has the overall impression of impending doom. (This is clearly mentioned on the back blurb though, so not giving the game away.) Hartley has done an excellent job of seeing through the eyes of a twelve year old at the beginning of the twentieth century in England. His recollections of how he viewed the world were spot on (to me), and his lush descriptions of endless summer days during school holidays is perfectly accurate: lengthy days, lassitude, and not much to do except mess around. Perhaps I had an odd childhood in the 1970's, but this was very close to how I remember my childhood growing up (although it might be burnished with the glow of memory.) These endless days of summer are also a great conduit for illustrating the impending doom (uncertain though that may be). The increasing temperatures (checked daily by the protagonist on the outbuilding's thermometer) links with the perceived increasing pressure of whatever news is to come, and thunderstorms hang in the air like heavy clouds. It's really well done. Leo is very interested in things of an astral nature: the signs of the Zodiac, his nickname of Mercury (the messenger in Roman mythology who wore winged sandals) and he half-believes that he has the power to control external forces such as the weather and sometimes other people's behavior and choices through magical curses (or spells, but mostly curses). The title comes mostly from the fact that Leo is tasked with taking messages between the young lady of the house and a local farmer, a totally unsuitable match that can only be conducted in secret. At first, Leo feels privileged to have been asked, but as the summer progresses and things get more complicated, it becomes a burden and a political minefield. The reader also learns the event that caused all the upheaval and led to a troubled adult life for Leo, but I shall say nothing here. (Don't want to give the story away. Suffice to say, it's good.) The Go-Between could also be interpreted to mean Leo's having to move between social classes, uncertain of how he should behave with whom (not only with him having to adapt to the higher social class, but also having to balance his friendship with the local farmer, a working class guy. And class was everything at this time.) ...

bronwynsmom...Glad to see that " House As a Mirror of Self" is on your recommend list...I just took it down from my book shelf & plan to start re-reading it! I thought it might help me to share MY brand new bathroom with my DH's house guest next month! I tend to be very territorial about MY stuff! I read it some years ago but need a refresher.

It was hard to pick just one, but I finally decided on The Emotional House. It is the book that House Thinking aspires to be. I highly recommend it! Everything is well thought out and concise.

I am reading The Emotional House with a notebook stuffed in as my place holder. There are all sorts of quizzes and checklists to help me discover my preferences, in case I don't already have a clear idea.

I'm getting together a list of books for my next round of reading. House as a Mirror of Self is not at my local library, but I can get it through interlibrary loan.
