stripping resin moldings
Comments (3)IÂve wondered about that myself, but I talked to a plaster guy and he said that a lot of older moldings were actually made from resin and wood rather than plaster. Plus, judging from the many coats of paint, IÂm assuming that theyÂre pretty old. That said, they very well may not be original to the house (i.e. 1906) and could date to some renovations that were done in the forties. IÂd love to try and work with whatÂs already there, but if you have any suggestions for reasonably priced replacement moldings, IÂd be happy to hear them. Comments (13)Ok, so after reading all this great advice, here is what I am going to do: I am going to start with stipping just the handrail and the end piece (from the round ball at the top to the floor - what is this called?) I think I will keep the balusters and skirt piece on the side painted white. I will loosen up old paint, sand smooth as possible, repaint in our trim color for the house. Now, how can you tell when something was "meant" to be painted or "meant" to be stained? I did notice after doing some scraping that the last layer appears to be stain. So, does that mean that this wood must be stain quality? Any tips on how to keep the paint stripper away from the balusters while I am working on the just the handrail and end post? Would painters tape work?...See MoreReplace copper weather stripping for door?
Comments (9)I have replaced that kind of copper(have seen the brass as well) weather stripping with new stuff of the same type---to satisfy the home owners desire to remain period compliant. The latest design that would be the best replacement would entail the removal of the doorstop section of the jamb and cutting a 1/2" deep dado in the stop(or replacement stop) to allow the rubber weather stripping to be installed in that slot. That also would mean the door stop would have to be relocated and the jamb refinished/repainted. The new rubber collapsable weather stripping is much more energy efficient as well as maintenance free(other than an occasional cleaning if needed). The major problem with the copper type is getting clothing snagged and tearing the metal. And it can be noisy in high winds. The other nail on types of weather stripping are less functional than the copper, IMHO....See More15 year old kitchen sustained water damage-replace, repair, repaint?
Comments (14)I think your cabinets are still beautiful and my feeling is if you have no intention of changing the layout, I'd leave well enough alone. Cherry cabinets are always in style and wood cabinets are actually coming back into vogue once again. As for the floors, I love a dark floor in looks, but had one in my condo and HATED the fact that it constantly looked dirty and dusty. I'd reconsider a dark finish. I think your floor finish works too. If the granite cracks, I'd look at a new countertop such as a Taj Mahal quartzite or if you love quartz, one that is warmer than a gray/white. Then have fun with the backsplash. Some other thoughts. How many more years do you intend to stay in the home? That too will determine whether it's worth redoing the cabinets, etc. How do you feel about the cabinets? Are you wanting to make white cabinets because that's what's in? Or do you really love the look and would love it even if it wasn't "in" and trendy? Do you really want to spend the money on new cabinets when the money could be used for other things? A nice cruise for example? Personally, I would never paint gorgeous cherry cabinets white. Painted cabinets will never hold up as long as your cabinets. The person who bought my condo painted the gorgeous bathroom cherry cabinets white, and somehow they look cheap now. (Please don't tell her I said that! LOL.) Thankfully she left the cherry kitchen cabinets....See Morepowermuffin
