Red, in semigloss. Hang a couple of nice pictures, matted in white in silver frames.

Well, that's what I think I'd do, anyway.

Consider wallpapering in tones of black white and silver and put all the colour into the accessories. Then you can easily change the colour scheme with the seasons, or with your mood.

We just painted our bathroom flax from Restoration Hardware (it's sort of a taupe color) dark brown but not as dark as chocolate and are getting tons of compliments on it. We have a white hex tile floor and all white fixtures (tub, pedestal sinks, toilet) with chrome hardware.

You can also add color with towels and mats if you are afraid of it being too neutral.

Red looks so good with B&W, it is really hard for me to recommend anything else! The taupe color sounds really interesting though, like Lisa said with some bright towels or something. Luckily just paint is relatively easy to change, if you aren't satisfied.

Apple green...

Hmmm. I don't think I can do red because my house has so much cranberry/burgundy. I like the idea of apple green. Oddly, I like the color of my sheetrock. We are painting a large part of the house. What do you think of bringing the hallway color (whatever that might be) into the bathroom? I think I should start painting swatches on the wall.

That's not a bad idea. Now go look at paint!!

Lavender and/or mint green. It's gorgeous, by the way. (But please don't do the hall lavender or mint green!)

Blue,green,or aqua. I grew up in a house built in 1925. The bathroom had white tiles,black trim,hex on the floor, and aqua walls.

My friend just did hers which had a similar layout and color scheme as yours in an aqua/turqoise color--very Caribbean but also very vintage looking. I would go with that or with the flax/taupe color, bringing in colored towels/bathmats as well.

How old is your house. If I get stuck I try to choose colors that would have been used when my house was built. Or you can go with those of a later remodel. For example I dont want an 1850's kitchen to match my house so Im pretending like it was remodeled in the 1920's. Still old but much more cook friendly. LOL.

I see two ways to go with your bath. One would be to paint it a white that goes wth the tile. Then get your pops of color from your towels and accessories. Advantage would be easy redecorating. The other way would be to go with a contrasting color on the walls. You can go a little more crazy in a small room than you would in a large one. Lemon yellow, hot pink, cobalt blue, kelly green, cherry red, turquoise, apple green.

If it were me I would use one of my accent colors from the adjacent room. That way it would go with the other room but not look like an extension.

The house was built in 1926 -- I have no idea what that means in terms of color (though we found bright aqua under the wallpaper). I need to paint my entire downstairs (kitchen, sun room, dining room, living room) and upstairs hallway, so I've not been thinking much about the bathroom lately -- though I will need to make a decision within the next couple of weeks. This is so hard!

I read an article somewhere today about a guy fixing up a 1920's house. With a bit of research he found that deep reds, goldenrod, creams, gold, seafoam green and French gray were popular colors of the day.

That seafoam green thing, or aqua, seems to pan out. I think that a Robin's egg blue or apple green would be just as nice.

I liked the color of the unpainted walls too.

Our family room was once painted seafoam green and french grey. I guess that was in the 20's. It is a really ugly combination. What were they thinking?
