I posted in your other thread, but had a different idea. What if you angled the peninsula to mimic the other angle rather than creating a separate island? It would spread the functions of that part of the kitchen which is your intent...

Unfortunately, saying nothing can move severely restricts the help people can give.

Moving the Cleanup Zone to the island is "nice" in theory, but it still doesn't address two of the issues I see...lack of workspace around the range and the location of the Prep Zone so far from the Cooking Zone. I suspect these are the underlying issues that are causing many of the problems.

Keep in mind that kitchen workflow is:

Refrigerator --> Prep Zone (with sink) --> Cooking Zone (range) --> Serving Zone (table or other eating location) --> Cleanup Zone (sink & DW)

OR, for prep & cooking dishes/utensils

Refrigerator --> Prep Zone (with sink) --> Cooking Zone (range) --> Cleanup Zone (sink & DW)

With the new layout, there's going to be a lot of walking back & forth across that 8' aisle OR you'll by trying to prep at the small island and, again, have conflict w/others working in the kitchen.

Beuhl- thanks for organizing the post. I guess I am a little stressed because a decision has to be made. We either keep the kitchen as is and not build the extension (which will incorporate the table) or we make the modifications and continue with the build out.

The island in the new plan would be more a clean-up area than prep(prep would be salads etc and almost nothing to do with the cooktop - that prep would take place at the main sink as it is now. The new island area would house dishes, silverware, coffee pot, toaster and all items needed for meals at the table in the extension.

I know I am very restricted since I can't make the kitchen wider and I can't move anything except the dishwasher. So feel free to tell me to leave things the way they are.

I was thinking more along the lines of something like this, which is a rough sketch traced on your plan. Mimicking the other angle on this end of kitchen with a peninsula would look less 'added on' than an island in kind of unrelated location compared to the rest of the design.

You would have to get creative with the countertop.

Is this extension part of an overall project or is it just for this purpose? What is the cost-benefit analysis of this?

Palimpsest- the extension is only to house the table in a morning room setting (windows on 3 sides) which would be nice and to free up a 12x12 area which we hoped to incorporate into the existing kitchen. Maybe we are trying too hard to do something which can't be done.

I don't necessarily think its a bad idea, I am just wondering if you think you will get enough benefit out of it for it considering you are adding on but leaving about 80% of the original function of the kitchen as is...How much is that going to cost? Could less than that be used to improve the current layout within the existing footprint, or not? Those are the questions I am thinking. A three sided windowed addition sounds nice for the table, but I am not sure that the island will solve the function issues?

I'm not sure what to tell you. I would like to suggest putting in a 24" trash/recycling center in the old DW's space. Other than that...I don't know.

Ideally, I'd say move the cooktop to the opposite angled wall. This would put the cooktop & Cooking Zone adjacent to the Prep Zone and now-prep sink. It would also protect the cooktop & Cooking Zone from traffic in and through the kitchen.

In your layout, your Cooking Zone is across the kitchen from the Prep Zone, with an 8' wide aisle separating them...much too far! Additionally, the cooktop & Cooking Zone are in the middle of main path through the kitchen.

I would do something like this with the back wall (left-to-right):

24" Wine Cooler + 24" MW Drawer 24" Drawer Base + 36" Refrigerator + 24" DW + 27" Sink Base + 24" Drawer Base + 33" Tall Oven Cabinet (If it would fit, go to a 30" sink base)

(BTW...the drawer under a MW drawer is not that big...I doubt you could fit "all the dishes for dining in the morning room" in it.)

Island:

24" UC Refrigerator + 45" of Drawer or other base cabinet(s)

I think you are not getting much in the way of feedback and it has been difficult to give it, because you are presenting a plan where you gave the final drawing as you want it and are saying: "This is what I will change, take it or leave it. What do you think?"

I think then, that you should leave it. Considering it involves new construction I don't think you will be getting enough bang for your buck out of the addition.
