I don't know if this will work, but I'd like to see if you could have plan 1, but move the fridge over to the other end of the range and put the clean up area, on what was the fridge wall. Then, I'd put a prep sink, on the big island (on the end by the new fridge location) and if you want to keep the little island, maybe use a different surface, like butcher block.

I'd also put all glass uppers, above the clean up area (opposite the dining room) for dishes and have dishwasher on the left, trash on the right. I'd put another trash area, by the prep sink, on the big island. This way, you'd have your main work area on the wall opposite the living room, dishes/clean up on the other wall...and the big island could still be used for parties, prep, and baking.

Maybe something like this, over the sink/clean up area?

I like no.3 mainly because the work triangle is so much more efficient. I don't fully understand levender's suggestions since it seems her idea of "cleanup area" would really just be counter space? I thought cleanup was supposed to have DW and sink (big sink). But I'm a newbie at this - just thinkin'

If Lavender's idea did include a DW and sink, it also would allow you to have more cabinets (incl upper cabinets) close to your DW for dish storage.

No 3 would come in second - mainly I don't like no 2 because too much walking around space (inefficient) in the middle. Maybe the drawing just accentuates that but in actuality it wouldn't be that big (not sure)? - on the other hand, the "walking around space" would be good if you will often have a second cook.

Sorry, looks like you have tough decisions.

Elphaba- LOL! I think a clean up area, is usually sink, dishwasher and trash...and I did say the PREP sink would be on the island...but thanks for the assist :)

lavendar lass--do you mean move the sink over to the area where the fridge is now? Hmmmm, I hadn't really thought about that.

However,DH doesn't want the fridge next to the dining area (even though I put it there in #3). He hears every little sound and hates to hear it run. I don't know how it could be much louder there than on the other wall but......(sigh) :^)

What about moving the fridge to where the ovens are and moving them to the other side of the range? Don't know if this would be an annoyance when you are opening the doors and someone is trying to come in the kitchen from the hallway. I would probably widen the walkway if I did that.

As for having glass fronts, my dishes aren't that matched and I have too many plastic drinking cups for that to look good. I wouldn't mind having the very high parts be glass to put my good china in.
Elphaba (awesome name by the way!), the longest leg of the triangle in #2 would be 7 1/2 or 8 ft. I have wondered about if that would be too much walking--it might be great for parties though. The walking area in plan #1 is also big, it just has the small prep area doesn't look that way.

If you don't want to move the fridge (or DH doesn't want to) then I'd stay with Plan #1 'as is' but add a prep sink, on the right of the cooktop (closest to the dining room). This would prevent traveling across your walkway to clean meats, drain pasta, rinse veggies, etc. when working at the cooktop. Really nice for parties, too. Maybe you could put your nice dishes in glass uppers over the prep sink (and maybe a plate rack?) and have close access to the dining area.

That would give you space for a microwave, next to the fridge, for a snack area and you could have your baking area, between the oven and cooktop. The main sink would still be on the island, but I think if you have a nice, deep area for stools, that won't be a problem.

Actually, plan 1 or 2 would work with that set up...depending on what you want. I would check the dishwasher location, to make sure you can open it, without hitting yourself in the leg, as you're standing at the sink. You've got plenty of room to move it over a bit, if necessary.

Plan 3, hands down.. but:

1) Switch Ovens and Fridge. Note you will need something like a 9" or 12" filler or pull out pantry between Fridge and wall to allow the fridge doors to open fully.

2) Move cleanup sink/DW/Trash to left wall - who wants to look at dishes drying on the island? Turn a 24" cabinet at the end of the island to face the cleanup sink for additional dish storage. This also keeps the snackers from the living room out of the cook's way.. dishes/glasses, sink, trash and Fridge all in a nice neat line. To break up the uppers in this area, try mirrored fronts, glass fronts with fabric behind them, or seeded glass fronts.

and

3) Put about an 18" prep sink & another trash in the island. I would place the sink right next to the 24" dish storage cabinet, and the trash next to that.

Oooo thanks for all the great ideas. I'm very visual so tonight when I have time (ie, after the kids are in bed!) I will sit down and draw the plans out.

I"m still working on it on my own as well. DH wondered if we could have something besides a rectangular island. Or turn it somehow. I've tried drawing something out but can't figure out something that I like. Any ideas on that??
