Home with No Storage or closets where to put everything

We moved into a 1886 farm house in eastern Montana. When we looked at the house there was a lot of stuff in here. the Master bedroom ( we will call it) is the attic. Its the largest room in the house so our bed would fit. After getting the other stuff out of the house we found there is No Closets anywhere. Someone had made make shift closets in the other two bedrooms. But nothing that I would call a closet. there is just rods on the wall. Upstairs in the master they put a rod on the wall with 2x6 boards to give some space so you could hang-up some clothes. The Roof Style is old barn style. So there isnt much space to make a full walk-in. I am looking for a easy fix to help out my little problem. something that will not take much money and can be taken with us if we happen to move again. For this place is a Rental.

Back in 1886 they didn't have the quantities of clothing and other stuff we have today. They used armoires for clothing - which are stand-alone closets.

I don't know what stores you have near you, there doesn't seem to be an Ikea in Montana. You can buy armoires that you assemble yourself from Home Depot. You might watch craigslist for people selling used ones.

Is it possible to turn one bedroom into a clothing closet/storage room? If so, you could buy inexpensive stand-along clothes racks and place them in there.

thank you I will check that out. because the roof is the old barn style I have to make sure that what ever I get will fit .

I love seeing your closets!! We have his and hers closets in the master, and I'm not satisfied with them (and we haven't even moved in yet). Our trim carpenter suggested a simple layout for rods and shelves, which looks great. Then I asked for shoe storage like rows of cubbies (meaning get more shoes in less space). He put in a slanted shelf along the baseboard. He was so proud of it, I didn't have the heart to tell him that it wouldn't meet my needs. Now, I'm kicking myself because I'm too wimpy to insist that he rip it out and redo it. Also, the floors have been finished now. I'm to the point where I have to pick my battles. Anyway, our best storage plans for our master are to de-clutter before moving in and to keep as much as possible in our huge cedar closet (for out of season clothing and shoes).

callieandkarin, I want to respond first to your Eeeevil Stepparent stereotype. I do not believe that the stepparent is evil in general. Some of the step mothers that I happen to know are among my closest friends that I have known for years. They are all really good people. They are kind, smart, attractive, wonderful women. They are well liked by others. However, when each of these women have remarried, they each married men with children. In every case, I thought that if anyone could pull it off, these women could, because they each genuinely like children to begin with. But in each case, (of the women that I know who have married a man with children) each found it very difficult to like "his" children. Each went on to have new children with their new husband, and somehow things got worse. I am surprised that they cannot bring themselves to like...let alone love, his children, but they do not. Does that make them evil? Of course not. Does it make a wonderful loving environment for a child to grow up in and feel loved and accepted? Sadly, no. Are there legions of stepchildren who are "deeply loved" by their stepparents? I hope so, but I personally do not know any. If there are, please comment on the forum. Are there legions of children who are taken better care of by their step parents than by their bio-parent...absolutely. Because many stepparents have exceptional character and will "step up to the plate" and do the right thing...regardless of how they feel. While the bio-parent may indeed be only self interested, even if their behavior hurts their own children. My response was in response to lee676 saying that "sooner or later he will realize that divorce means parents leaving each other, and NOT parents leaving children". Often parents DO leave children too in a divorce. Most do not exactly mean too. It just "happens". They once lived at home with their children. Divorce happens and they remarry. They now see their own child every weekend or every other weekend, if they live nearby. But you have so many parents (and lets tell it like it is, and say fathers for the most part) who remarry someone, and he ends up seeing his children less and less. For many, many, many children...they only see their own father over summer break, and maybe a holiday or two , because he lives in another state, with his new wife and children. Or perhaps he does not live that far away, but his new wife gets upset when he brings his children to their house, and so the visits are dwindling down to lunch at mcDonalds or something. Yes, there are many that do their best to make the children feel a part of things...but there are many, many who don't...and you cannot pretend that does not happen in divorce. It simply does. Obviously not in every case, but in many, many divorces it does. Sadly. In regards to your comment about Dr. Laura Schlesinger...you have a woman who rubs many people the wrong way...and many times...I disagree with something she has said, or I think that her delivery is rude. However, I disagree with your comment that she is ignorant. She has spent her life talking to people (including children) who need guideance with problems. I believe that she has a unique view from talking to people for the last (I don't know...30 years) that few people have. Whether I agree or disagree with her...I would never call her ignorant. And I respect that she will stand up (alone) on something she believes in, and will NEVER buckle to popular opinion or views, like most people do. They go along with what ever they think will impress others. It takes courage to stand up...alone...and say what people do not want to hear. I respect that because we never see anyone willing to actually do it. And take the heat for what they said, without trying to rephrase it or make excuses or blame. To simply stand up and say that they believe something and not back down to the masses. How many are willing to do that? So ignorant? She is in no way ignorant. Controversial...absolutely.

If you have pretty much the same storage layout, you can sit for a bit and identify any past storage sticking points/irritation areas, and decide how to fix them. I agree with beacham's inventory/cull advice but then if your storage worked well in your past kitchen, go ahead and replicate it rather than fretting. Don't be afraid to have some empty cupboards but as you're putting things away, you may realize an item can now 'go high' as beacham notes, rather than using prime storage space. And nothing is set in concrete. In the past six months, this forum has inspired me to rearrange cupboards, my pantry and even my refrigerator. This may help, too. Dont take down so many walls, that your kitchen is visible to everything. That is a big pet peeve of mine, when kitchens are visible to your dining and your living room. I really dislike seeing dirty dishes used for kitchen, when I have company and they are sitting at the dining room table. I dont have a choice in this house, because, kitchen and dining room, were built open to each other, but, it doesnt mean I like it. I actually hate that part. On one side of my dining table, people get to look at a nice view out of a large set o f windows, the people that sit on the other side, have their backs to the view outside, but, do have a view of the entire area where I have done the cooking, and the dishes and pans that were used to do that cooking. Its certainly not the way I would like it to be.

Ikea sells some of their furniture on-line. For inexpensive and moveable, they might be your best bet.

I've also found armoires at second-hand stores and finish-it-yourself furniture stores.

If you are handy, it wouldn't be terribly difficult to build a closet in the attic. You could ask the landlord if he would provide all the materials, you could do the labor. That way, even though you'd have to leave it behind when you leave, you would be out maybe a day or two of work, but no money.

You could always just hang a curtain a few feet out from a wall and put a clothes rod behind it.

I agree with the idea of asking the landlord for permission to install something a bit more permanent, if you want to--make the argument that you'd have to leave it anyway, and it would make the house much more appealing to a subsequent tenant.

Otherwise, I vote for things like this:

But it would probably be MUCH cheaper to simply ask the landlord for permission to attach a clothing rod to the joists, and hang a curtain in front.

The rods are roughly $5 to $15 at Home Depot.

You could use one for the clothes and the other for the curtain in front of it.

Get two sets--one for the clothes, the other for the curtain.

We have a contract that allows us to do anything to the house to make it better . As long as we pay for everything. Landlord will not provide anything for the house. I have been on website looking for portable closets or something that will fit in a tight space. the stairs are tight and everything that go's up has to be small enough fit up the stairs. I have been to 2nd hand places and the only thing that i found would not fit up the stairs. At this point I am thinking that I Need to just build a small closet at the top of the stairs.

Building a closet would work.

But do check Ikea again. Most of their furniture comes flat-packed and you assemble it yourself. And you can buy most of it on-line and get it delivered.

Also, don't let the height of the wardrobes scare you away. You can always put a wardrobe a few feet out from a wall and use the space behind it to store more things.

Our house has No Closets either and we have one free-standing wardrobe that gives us about 4 feet of hanging space that we fight over. Actually, I gave up the fight and let the boys have it, DH and DS, so none of my clothes are on hangers - all folded on shelves or in drawers (or draped over chairs, 'nother story :-)).

Truth is, much that is usually hung up doesn't need to be, and hanging isn't really the best thing for lost of clothes anyway, especially long term stuff that you don't wear often - you get those shoulder bulges that are never quite where your shoulders are. And hanging is a very inefficient use of space. If you took everything down that is hanging in your closet (and I've done this with a small wardrobe) and folded it up on the floor, it would take up way less space than a whole closet.

In our house we tend to iron right before wearing, I suppose if you iron in advance you do have to hang after ironing.

Other ways to hang clothes on hangers includes putting hooks up on walls and hanging hangers on those (Lee Valley has some long hooks), or use those 'over the door' hooks.

It all depends on how much REALLY needs to be on hangers.
