And now, for a totally wacko idea (offered in the spirit of all-out brainstorming, because you never know where a goofy idea will go.) Your tile guy could use his wet saw to slice the Moroccan tiles into thin strips, and you could build a liner with one or two rows of these strips. Tierra Y Fuego offers a sliced-up version of their Mexican Talavera tiles, to give you a visual of how your tiles might look (after being cut into strips): And Avente Tile now offers a sliced up version of their cement tiles, so it's not completely unheard of: I kind of think this might work best when the entire tile installation is "sliced up". I'm not sure how well it would work when coupled with your lovely installation of the whole tiles over the range (which I certainly would never change.) But, it would carry the exact same colors around the room. I dunno. I just feel better now that I've gotten that idea out of my brain. Since I've cut up tiles for mosaic work, I couldn't quite squash the idea. As I said...just kicking around ideas and brainstorming. ;-)

didn't have time to read all the answers. I have no backsplash and have never regretted it...been over 6 yrs. It is painted with BM matte...which has ceramic in it. It is as beautiful now as it was when first painted. I love the fact that I can showcase other things ...art etc in my kitchen and no competition. Also if I ever want to change it is as quick as a paint brush...expense is minimal..paint only ! All in all I think it is serene as you point out . Here is one pick. Since I have a lot of high heat cooking in my kitchen..built in deep fat fryer as well as gas cook top I can definitely speak to the longevity of paint only. c ( more at this album )

Here is a link to google, how that backsplash should have been installed. There are some u tube videos too. I watched one video, where they used grout, between the countertop and the backsplash, and grout should not be used there. Caulking shud be done between backsplash and countertop. My backsplash is also caulked in all the corners, rather than grouted. Once you watch these videos and read these articles, you will see that your thinset was put on improperly, and thats why your tiles are falling off.
