BM Gray Owl with woven shades

We've painted our living room gray owl and I have always wanted woven shades. But when I was looking at drapery fabric (Graber) to go with cool toned shades everything looked "off". I really liked the cream tone fabric with the woven shades but I don't know if it would clash with my gray owl walls. I'm really at a handicap when it comes to decorating. Need to shop more, I know there is more than Graber.

Maybe it's me, maybe it's hard to tell with small swatches. I look on Houzz and there are a few warmed toned woven shades with cool toned fabric that look wonderful.

Am I overthinking this? I always do that, afraid of making a mistake.

I also have trouble making decor decisions, especially with things like shades that are custom, expensive and non-refundable. Posting a photo of your room and a color swatch of the shades would help...

Your post reminded me of "For the Love of a House" kitchen. She has her kitchen painted in Gray Owl, but uses warm tones and woven shades throughout. It's gorgeous. See this link.

Gray has an undertone of green, purple or blue... best to match those with the surrounding colors. Maria Killam (of Colour me Happy blog) has a few rules for selecting gray shades. She is working out of Canada, but translation for the paint names should be available. Her posts on gray undertones including color samples are also very informative. -VW Working with Grays: 5 Rules of Thumb By Maria Killam 1. Decide whether you want your gray to have a green, purple or blue undertone, it will make it much easier to choose. 2. Consider your fixed elements when choosing a gray undertone. 3. Work with the light in the room. 4. If the house is empty at the start of a project, do not fill the walls with 10 samples of gray paint colours. 5. Choose your fabrics first. If you look closely at this kitchen (above) the stone countertop and flooring and subway tile have a green undertone while the interior panels of the doors have been painted a blue-gray. It's subtle and doesn't look necessarily wrong (to the untrained eye) but can you see it now that I'm describing the difference? Most people can. First, thank you all for the feedback this is why I wanted more opinions. I have more pictures but can't seem to upload more than one at a time. It is nice to hear that at least the cabinets look good from afar. They are not solid cherry if they were solid cherry fronts, I agree I would not be so quick to paint them, they are just a cherry veneer. I included a close up of the cabinets to give you an idea they aren't in great shape. Bee - your kitchen is amazing! thanks for the thoughts. I never noticed the orangey floors but you are right they do look that way and now that I am looking at it, it is overcast from the cabinets. Good idea of painting up a couple of boards, I have little swatches taped all over the space because we get a lot of sun movement in the space throughout the day. The table is 108 inches long, I am drooling over James Moder florale chandelier but need two of them. I don't think I could get DH to agree to three! LOL. A couple of responders noticed the island, the island is a just big box, open box deal, I don't think we paid $300 bucks for it, its a dark stain. Not worth refinishing. I would love to replace the counters, but with the sq ft we need it would be double that of a professional painting the cabinets, and I am really afraid that they would just look worse!

Boy, I can relate to all of these posts. I have RP in my open floor plan. On the walls that have natural light, it looks OK (not my favorite) but the adjoining family room with the screened porch next to it blocking the light, the walls look like green/yellow mud and I am stressing as to what to do. My trim & cabinets are off-white so i have to stay with the warm greys. I've even tried Sea Salt which looks dull. I'm going for an LRV of 65+ so I'm trying the sample board with the Repose Gray at 75% with the idea of the adjoining kitchen/nook at 100%. We will see. Next I'll try the Gray Owl - OC 52 i think. Beware.......there are two Gray Owls! The Oc 52 is the lighter version. To complicate matters, I have a beautiful silver gray sectional sofa that I'm working with. I appreciate all of the posts here.

I went to the "for the love of a house" site and recognized I had visited before. I noted that they used Titanium in their master bedroom. This is the color I used in my small dark, one windowed kitchen. Artemis used sea haze and I almost went with that for my kitchen. I looked at a lot of grey green blues and they are all pretty. What helped me with the final selection was to paint up patches on the wall and live with the samples for several days, comparing and contrasting. I must have painted 14 or so samples before I settled on Titanium. Each trial helped me refocus my search even when the trial was a reject. I am going to save this thread to "clippings" so that when I am ready to paint my bathroom (next to the kitchen) I can refer to the colors discussed here, and visit "for the love of a house" again to see her selections.

I have GO throughout the house. I am still turning naked windows into dressed ones. Currently I am waiting for backordered woven shades from JCP to arrive for the window and slider in this room, but I thought I'd show you my space.

Panels and blinds are from JCP. Too many windows in this house to do anything but ready made.

Go to Lowe's or Home Depot and see the full size woven shades, better yet take a photo of your living room wall or throw some of the paint on a piece of paper. Find some tones you like in the blinds and hold the paint sample up to see how they look. I can't see any reason why a warm cream wouldn't look good with gray.

What color is your window trim? I recently got off-white roman shades from the bedroom and I matched the window trim as closely as possible. That's where I think any off-ness would show up.

A darker contrasting color shade would also work and might be a good opportunity to add a design element.

Can you arrange an in-home consultation where they come to measure and bring the books with them to view onsite?

Thanks everyone. I feel encouraged to go outside the box with cream or warm tones against my GO paint. I think I was trying to be too "matchy" anyway.

That was a lovely link Lesmobo. Beekeeper thanks for reminding me about Home Depot and Lowes! I walk by their dislays all the time and forgot they do custom window treatments. (plus I have a $35 dollar credit there =D )

I recently painted living room gray owl with white trim... going only with shades/blinds (no curtain) and am still debating if I should go white, gray, or wood colored.... would love to see what you decided
