Generically, it's a plain Queen Anne.

Probably from the 1895 to 1905 time period.

Late Queen Anne/Classic revival/builder vernacular.
QA: shingles, composition, vertical thrust.
Classical Revival: Columns, prominent arch (romanesque?)shallow box cornice.
Vernacular: overall simplicity w/o pretentions to high style.

I always think of Queen Anne style as more elaborate than this house. Big porches, towers or bays, and lots of little gables.

This was built in 1920, but it's central Ohio -- they may have been behind the times!

Styles, or stylistic elements, can be found in virtually any sized structure.

In the town were I went to college there were several Greek Revival homes.

One was a lovely little cottage-sized home, while less than 6 blocks away was a rather incredible Greek Revival mansion.

In this house, the Queen Anne elements are there:

Multiple roof profiles, shingles used as decorative elements, the heavy pediments over the windows, including the pediment over the arched window, the ashlar stone foundation, the asymetrical placement of the porch...

It's certainly not high Queen Anne style, but it has a lot of the elements of Queen Anne.

Many homes of various styles had rusticated foundations and asymetrical porches. The rounded arch window surround is so heavy as to be almost Romanesque, though that doesn't make it a Romaneque home either.

Very true, which is why I called it a Generic Queen Anne in my original post.

When you get right down to it, there are very few stylistically pure homes in this country that don't borrow from a number of architectural disciplins.

That's my biggest problem with the term vernacular -- if you get right down to it virtually every thing is vernacular.

The Queen Anne style in and of itself is a vernacular style in that it incorporates widely disparate elements such as that Romanesque Arch. The two styles were all the rage at roughly the same period of time in the United States (not to mention Beaux Artes, Second Empire, and others) and architects (even Richardson) transposed elements from one to the other, especially when the client was a private individual who might have some very definitive ideas on what he/she wanted in a home.

Queen Anne style is a British import which had definite beginnings as a high style with a group of aesthetes-- artists/architects who were about making a clear break with the preceeding styles (which they considered corrupt/dehumanizing). It was about as far from a vernacular expression as can be imagined. It was the polar opposite; a design reform hearded by the avant garde of the day. Maybe the first time that a European culture harkened back to its own past for inspiration rather than to Greco-Roman, Egyptian, or "Oriental" modes.

Actually, from what I've read the Brits consider Queen Anne to be an American style of architecture, as do many American authorities.
There was a Queen Anne revivalist movement starting in the 1860's in Britain, but except for a certain exuberence in decorative styling they don't on the whole look much like our American Queen Annes. They tend to be brick and have rather a Dutch or Flemish look to them.
The architects who did start the American Queen Anne movement were on the whole British emigrees who brought the kernel of the style with them, but then altered it into a whole new thing.

my mom always refered to the plainer looking queen anne's as 'Princess Anne's'

Queen Anne is, at its heart, vernacular, especially in the applications where local, traditional, building materials are not only used (local stone, such as brownstone, shingles, and timber) but also celebrated for the stylistic qualities that the bring.

This house looks very similar to our duplex, which was converted from single family in the 1920's. The tax rolls of our city say that our duplex was built in 1920, and I don't believe it at all. When did your city start keeping building permits? Lincoln (where I live) began keeping those on file in 1903. Any house that doesn't have an original building permit is assumed to have been built before then. There is no original building permit on file for the duplex; the eariest one is for a garage built in 1915. So -- based on that evidence, and that the house looks like vernacular Queen Anne, I think the duplex was constructed in the 1890's.

Have you found/seen a permit from the time the house was built? I would bet that the date of 1920 is way too late for your house!

Also -- what does the floor plan look like?? I'm thinking of deconverting to single-family again, but I haven't figured out what it would have looked like.
