Hang on. What are you doing for backsplash and where IS the wall space in the straight-on kitchen picture, which you want to paint? I'm picturing all backsplash, and it looks like the kitchen is off in a corner, which changes the question a little (and takes the kitchen picture out of the equation). Lovely kitchen and home! You have the dark island, counter tops and floors which ground the space. Go light, definitely with your backsplash. Key question to me is, what will be seen, from where? If kitchen is off separate, then it will matter less what color you select in adjacent room(s). We used BM Aura Vancouver Day in the pantry and breakfast area (a grey blue). This did not work with our creamy white cabinets/Torquay quartz/Cherry islands (too blue and the wrong one). BM Aura Shimmer blends nicely. (A white with presence, do like it). Another thought (since we've all been suggesting yellow, and perhaps you've been there done that and want a change)...the DAT (design around this) threads on the kitchen forum had some fun blue and green kitchens; I'm linking to the 60s ranch thread, but I think the formica thread had options, too. Sadly, many of the pictures are gone now, but some are still some there. I bet you could find fabric pairing that blue with a pale green and use the fabric and accessories to tie things together. BM Pale Vista could be worth a look if you like that combo. Maybe some pops of either red or yellow, like in a clock. Yes, they say that alkyd whites yellow, however, all of the trim in my house is painted white with oil based paint and it hasn't yellowed at all, that I can tell, and some of it is 10 yrs old. No latex cures as hard as alkyd (DH ran the coatings dept of a specialty chemical company for years and knows everything there is to know about latex paint and even he wouldn't paint trim or cabinets with latex). Having said all of that, my trim isn't sitting next to powder coated white appliances. On a happier note, BM dove white is beautiful (was my first choice before I switched to stained wood). Consider both the subway tile and just a bold blue at the stove area. Try to get something close to the island color (or a blue that complements the island). What ever your decision make sure they add a row below the counter at the stove area, why? If the new owners decide to put in a slide in stove (one without the back controls) you want to make sure the tile is below the top of the stove. I mention this because if you are selling soon and I was the buyer, the stove would be one of my replacements and I like when the tile behind the stove is a focal point. Also subway tile is inexpensive so just doing a limited space with something unique will make it pop. Love the kitchen and all the best.
