Kraftmaid Warehouse Cabinet Shopper

Has anyone used Jamie Williams to shop for you at the Kraftmaid cabinet warehouse outlet? It sems like a good deal and a great way to get cabinets for rock-bottom prices.

I have heard of him but don't know anyone who used him. A while ago a woman flew from CA to the warehouse to do her kitchen and had a blast. If you live close, I'd do it in a heartbeat, but I know for us, we live in MD, so with two plane tickets, hotel, food, car/truck rental, gas, etc. it didn't seem worth it when we needed really specific sizes/colors/doors. But, if you have a bigger kitchen and can be flexable (or use two different colors/styles), I'd do it in a heartbeat. I was thinking about it for our basement, but moneywise, I'm still not sure if it is worth it.

If you do a google search (I looked him up when we were buying Kraftmaid), he seems knowledgeable and people seem to like him. His prices are reasonable given you're paying him to know what he's doing although if you live close, I'd think part of the fun is figuring it out (although his book could help).

hi there...i am a KM warehouse shopper. only 6 visits to get my entire kitchen (oh and a vanity too, just because). good thing i thought it was fun!! i have seen this guy's website (the shopper) and i think that he is on the mark in terms of what he promises (he's honest about how many trips it might take + the fact that you should be negotiable on style/size of cabinet).

will he need 6 visits for you? almost certainly no. i had to buy small loads, because our van is small. also, our kitchen is small and we had to have exact cabinets (small ones) to fit. the large sets that are the warehouse's main attraction were cheaper per cabinet, but are really assembled for large eat in kitchens. for example, we needed one 30 in drawer base, not 4!! we needed one lazy susan, not 2. only 8 uppers, not 12...etc.

it is a great bargain, i think, even with paying the shopper! if you live nearby, i would visit first, just to see how it works. then ask him to fetch the cabinets for you.if you are looking for overlay doors and cherry, maple, or oak, and a popular style and finish, it could work out well for you. remember that even though it is the outlet, the shopper can see the cabinets up close and reject the rough, streaky, chipped ones immediately rather than waiting for them to be delivered and having to return them. good luck kren

All good posts on this subject. Wellborn Forest is a spin off of Welborn and located on the same street in Alabama. In the same town as a manner of speaking is Tru wood, Legacy also known as debut and Door Components. I would say as a general rule of thumb door components and Debut have the lowest prices in the group. My old business partner screwed them and they will not sell to me over her. Still makes me mad. Debut has a united series which is less expensive then some of the Chinese cabinets. Plywood box construction is not available in the United Series. Aristokraft has a instock line up called contractors choice which is Chinese like in price. You can not get soft close drawers in it. I am doing a kitchen for a family right now where an import cabinet they will put together themselves is about $3,500 for their kitchen. That is a plywood box, dovetail drawer, soft close rails, I can add soft close to the doors if I wanted to. Kabinart was $5,050. In my opinion Kabinart is better buy but they wanted to go rock bottom. The import cabinet from TSG they chose has a 5 year warranty the longest in the industry for imports. Sunco, 6 Square and Allwood would be in between those to prices. The best priced national brand for something highly modifiable is hands down bridgewood advantage. Dealer price is consistently in the low $300 per foot of wall for upper and lower cabinets fully loaded with all possible accessories. I like to sell it at $450 which is inbetween Woodmark and Kraftmaid prices in general. Smart cabinets is very low in price as well. I like there wide stile cherry shaker cabinet that is reverse raised. It is beautiful and rock bottom priced as well. They will be cheper then any brand mentioned in the other posts. There are trade offs to get the price that low it is not meant for every one. Brandom Cabinets gives me the best price to sell kitchens to a company with apartments they renovate each month I have 1/2 a truck load being unloaded in the morning. CNC has two beatiful walnut cabinets that are very inexpensive also. Limited cabinet sizes but a great cabinet for a tight budget.

I did exactly that. I actually did my own layout/design and I had a drawing with measurements on it. I made appointments at the different cabinet shops who sold the brands I was interested in, and brought my drawing with me. At the appointments, they would give me information about their cabs, I'd ask all my questions, pick a wood, door style and stain color, and leave the drawing with them. Then they'd give me a quote. The drawing I shopped around didn't end up being my final design but I kept using that same drawing for price comparison purposes. Some of the shops gave me additional advice and opinions and suggestions on changes I might make, some didn't. I also got quotes based on this design from a couple of custom shops. Sometimes I just faxed them the drawing and they faxed me a quote! I'm a little bit crazy and I wanted to look at a lot of cabinets and ended up with a lot of quotes. This was partially driven by a particular feature that was a must-have for me, but that not every cab mfg offered. I don't think anyone refused me a quote or insisted that they needed to do the whole job (not just cabs). Even Expo (now no longer in business) who had a policy that they wouldn't even talk to you without a $750 deposit, agreed to give me a quote based on a spec list of cabinets and features for no charge. It also behooved me to get quotes from different shops who sold the same brand -- you'd be surprised at the difference in quotes for the same exact cabinets, same brand, etc. It pays to shop around. In the end I got Brookhaven, a brand I originally was 100% sure was too expensive for me. I got all my wants and needs, and then some. OH! and one more thing, just as a side note. Before I discovered this forum I thought the only cabinets I would be able to afford would be Kraftmaid from HD or Lowes. Boy was I wrong. Pricing came in all over the place, some super high but several were right in line with KM. Even custom guys had quotes which ranged from very low to very high and everything in between. The Brookhaven cabs I ended up with were actually about 10% higher than KM would have been, but IMHO much nicer cabinets.

When you said you went to the "granite store" my alarm bells went off. What you really need to do is search out the granite yards in your area and visit them. Some of these are actually indoors, but in a warehouse space, not a store space. The difference is seeing actual slabs of stone and lots of them. A smallish sample is OK for quartz because the rest of the slab looks just like the sample. That isn't true for granite which can have wild variations from one section of the stone to another, and certainly between stones. Some stone yards have sample pieces that you can take away with you, which is good. We had a piece of a green stone (Typhoon Green) that we really liked outdoors, but in our kitchen it was very olive, not a color I like much. An exception to this could be a store that carries pre-made counters in a standard size. If that is something that would work for you, then this could be a good deal if you found something you liked. In that case, what you see is what you get and you can't beat the price.

Quality standpoint the edge goes to Kraftmaid, however make sure to upgrade to an all plywood box. You don't want to spend all this on a remodel and get particle board boxes. However, if your layout does not require many custom elements or custom sizes, you can find high quality all plywood white shaker style cabinets online. White shaker style/finish combination is currently the most popular selling cabinet in the stock industry. Make sure to research the construction specifications and the company in detail if you find stock cabinets online to ensure you know exactly what you're getting. Deals are out there for the savvy shoppers. Good luck with your project!

This is the first time I’ve ever heard of the Kraftmaid Outlet. I just looked it up and I only live 2 hours away! Maybe I should check it out. Anyone else been to the warehouse or used the shopper?
