Organizing the Home

Has anyone ever done a "California Closet" thing themselves? Like buy the different units and install them in the closet? I do not have walk in closets just reach in but I have seen pictures that make it look great. I just want to see how involved it is the cost etc. thanks for any info

Anything can be done if you spend enuogh time, sweat and money, but think of it this way - those things are made of components that the big co's order in huge bulk, probably at great discounts, from their long time suppliers. Can you compete with the prices - or will you have to buy everything at top retail price one at a time?

we just did the closet maid system at lowes. we did the expressions (i think that is the name) and it has everything you could think of! the closet is about 10 feet wide and 4 feet deep so we did both of the sides and the back. it cost us about $1000, but i feel it was worth every penny! if we had just done shelves ourselves, it would have saved us about $500, but nothing would be very organized.
another option is ikea. they have some amazing closet organizational systems. but you have to go into the store. you can't tell anything on their site!

We have had separate reach ins for 33 years until this house where we have a shared 7'6" x15' walkin/ walk through closet bisected by doorways. One door opens to the bath and another to the study (laundry is just steps away through the study -- close enough that it has become our habit just to drop dirties in the laundry). Contrary to some, we very definitely prefer the closet through the bath! It's nice to get up, put on a robe, make the bed and open the blinds first thing before coffee and then not have to go back into the bedroom area to get dressed. Also, instead of having to walk past closets on the way from the bed to the bath, it makes for a much shorter trip for nighttime nature calls. His end is 7'6" x 5' with a dresser and cubbies on one side and couple rods on the other with a bench on the end under a high window and my end is 7'6" x 7' with a single rod on one side, double rods across the back, and dresser on the other side with room for a small chair (still have to put my cubbies up). It's perfect for us.

How about option 3 - move the doorway into the bedroom all the way to the left where your closet door is, and then run one long closet on the entire wall from the corner the room to that doorway, so the closet is directly across from the sliders.

Where vertical space matters and/or we don't care about being able to slide the clothes hung up, we just don't use the rod brackets or rod (we just put the clothes hangers right on the 'shelf.') If you have the 12" deep shelves, you could change them out to the 16" deep shelving if you want more depth for hanging things (i.e., when not using the rod brackets.) (We use this exact ClosetMaid ShelfTrack system in all our closets - our master closet looks alot like your photos.)

Reach In Closet switch inside or outside closet?

Is the switch bank next to the closet door? Does the closet door swing, or slide? If it swings, is the switch bank on the hinge side, or is it on the doorknob side? Tbh, if it’s a reach-in, sounds like the switch could be hard to reach, especially if the closet fills up. Would you consider an automatic switch located in the door jamb? When you open the door, the light would automatically come on.

If you want to get an idea of how much one will cost, many of the online closet sites will let you design your own closet online and calculate the cost. www.easyclosets.com is one that I know of. For comparison purposes, I think that they're cheaper than California Closets but more expensive than the kind you buy at HD or Lowes.

I used Oranizedliving.com to purchase a system called FreedomRail. Much better quality than closetmaid and less costly than Easy Closets. It was on sale at the time for 20% off.

I also used an IKEA Bureau in my walk in. They have one that is 14 1/2 inches deep. I just changed the handles to match the set of FreedomRail drawers that I installed. It saved me $$ to use the bureau.
