One-leg table for Breakfast Nook?

Hi!

We're in the process of updating our kitchen and one of the steps is re-upholstering an L-shaped bench in the breakfast nook. I'd like to get a one-leg table (kind of like a "diner" table but I'd prefer it not to be metal) to go with the bench but not sure where to find it. Any ideas on where to find something like this at a reasonable price?

Where do you live? We're having ours custom-made, and it's not nearly as expensive as I'd thought it would be.

I would expect that to be a custom item or a salvage find, but I've never actually looked. My table in the middle of the room needs all four legs. :)

Taller tables - pub tables or "gathering" tables - have been popular recently, but I think that some of the popularity relates more to appearance than to functionality. That is, I think that they work best in more open areas, where the drama of a higher table may be desirable and a regular-height small table may look, well, small and dumpy. Although I don't really like to sit at high tables, I like the way a high table looks in a large family room or in an open plan, but I don't think a high table would look as good in a nook where it can't be approached from all directions. Just for information, regular table height is 29 or 30 inches and the seat of a standard chair is at about 18 inches. Counter height is 36 inches and requires a 24-inch stool. Bar height is 42 inches and usually requires a 30-inch stool.

"A built in bench won't work due to price and the window in the nook that is only 30" off the floor." I have a 5x4 breakfast nook now where I have an ikea upper cabinet (inexpensive) on the floor for the bench. It is 12" wide and has storage. ikea used to have this on display with a diy cushion that was just some fabric wrapped around batting. It is okay for my kids, but we eventually had a 16" vinyl cushion made for it. The cushion cost 3x the price of the ikea cabinet. It is just plywood topped with foam and wrapped with vinyl. It is stapled. If I had to do it again, I would do it myself. My table is also from ikea and its mounted on one side to the wall and has one leg for extra support. The leg is centered on the table and allows you to easily slide into the bench. It is not an ideal situation, but it was the best we could do with our existing space. I don't think the 3x3 table is ideal. If you like the stainless tabletop, look for something similiar in a longer and narrower size, 30 inch max. How about using a round table? Or a bar height table with stools? You might want to look at some of the "Not So Big House" books by Sarah Susanka for some ideas. I don't care for her style, but her design concepts can be applied to any style. I think the sink opposite the range is fine. But I don't think there's enough refrigeration looking forward with a growing family. Now perhaps this is just me -- your desires and needs should be paramount. You're taking down a wall and combining the kitchen and dining room. LOVE that! Very smart. But then there's a tangle of chairs and stools around the island. The table is a few steps away. That makes no sense to me honestly. I see it all the time and think it might be so much better to build an island with storage and prep and additional refrigeration features -- things that even the kids can use as they grow. If they do their homework or art projects they can use the big table. That lovely bay window is practically ignored! I'd look to use that with a window seat built in and a mom chair nearby.

I agree, for a round table I wouldn’t go larger than 42” in diameter, but that seats only 4 people. If you put a bench under the window (it need not be built in), you could do a 60” long rectangular table, which seats 6, and possibly 7 if you put 3 children on the bench (grandkids?). There would only be 24” between each end of a 60” long rectangular table and the wall, which is tight but doable if it is important to maximize seating. You’d probably have to push in the end chairs for people to access the bench. I’d put painters tape on the floor to represent the table to see how that looks.

Southeast Michigan..the thought crossed my mind but I dismissed it pretty quickly thinking it would be too expensive. Perhaps I should check into it. Thanks for the thought!

There are many companies that sell pedestal table bases. They are not expensive and come in many varieties. You could then make, or have made, a top in a size and material of your choice -- wood, laminate, marble....

In my last kitchen I had one of those tiger oak round tables. I looked high and low for a booth with a curve (like a c instead of an L) because I wanted to use a round table. I actually had one shipped from an ebay seller in Montana and then reupholstered near my Michigan home because it still cost less than having a custom made one. An L banquette won't really work with around round table. Try to find a rectangular or square one.

Often you see trestle type legs in this kind of arrangement, which is one leg but it goes all down the middle of the table the long way.

We're in Central Ohio--the guy we're using is about an hour north of us, I think. I'll get the contact info from my husband and find out for sure.
