remodeling home office--cord clutter

Having new drawers, file cabs and long countertop installed so that the entire office will be in u shape. One corner of countertop will be my "desk" with drawers on each side. I will have the computer/monitor/printer all in that area. Does anyone have ideas for keeping the cords out of sight as well as the huge auxillary power supply, almost the size of a shoebox? Will keep cpu on desk and out of way of the dust that no doubt will be around.

Was this the right place to post this? I didn't see a home office section. also, still don't know how to search within only one section. I seem to get recommendations for gardening things when I just want to know about interior things right now.

Also, check out Ikea. They have some boxes that attach to the underside of your desk to hold cables, as well as lots of other cord control measures.

In your case, since it sounds like the desktop will be attached to the walls, can you get some electric outlets installed so that they are just above the height of the desk? That way you won't have to drill holes in the desk for the computer cables to run through. If you can figure out the best placement for the computer, you could even hide the outlets behind the computer. Then you'd just need to bundle up the extra cable so it isn't taking over your desk.

Camlan, can you point me to the section of the Ikea website that has the cord control items? My searches are coming up blank.

The items that are sold for cord control on the Apartment Therapy link don't come close to fixing the problem for desktops. There are so many cords running in so many directions that the best I seem to hope for is to loop the excess. And as soon as I do that, I find that I have to access something and all my nicely bundled loops have to be undone.

Our home is too small for us and I get rid of things often. I cant stand stuff just sitting around. One rule I have is that if I have to move it more than 3 times to get to something that I really need it must be removed from the house. Sometimes its unfortunate because I will finally, 2 years later go looking for it and remember that it made me mad and I threw it away. Some people are pack rats like my DH. He is also very particular about "his stuff". Especially his desk area. One day I was home while he was at work and I went at it. He had grocery store receipts from 2004!!!! He has about 5 sets of gold clubs in the attic and he doesn't even play golf anymore... I really hope having more space gets rid of some of the clutter. If everything had a home it would be so nice. Maybe I should just move everything out of the house and then start moving back in the most important items first and then when I am out of room no more crap comes in.

My weakness is paper clutter - I am pretty good with clearing out clothes/dishes/books/etc. but paper is an obstacle for me that I struggle with. What I found to be the BIGGEST HELP EVER to my paper clutter habit was not to let it into my house. When I receive catalogs or advertisements or other mail I can't help but read it or "keep it to read later". Even though I know it's junk and should be tossed. So I went on a CAMPAIGN not to let it into my house in the first place. It was initially time-consuming, but SO worth it. Here are the steps: 1. Go to the DMA's website (the Direct Marketing Association) to register for the Mail Preference Services by filling in the online form. It takes about 30-60 days for it to kick in. On that same webpage is also a credit card solicitation opt-out service which I recommend both to decrease junk mail, and to decrease chances of identity theft (identity thieves could take a credit card solicitation addressed to you, fill it out, and get a credit card in your name). 2. Call all your magazine subscriptions' 800 numbers, and tell them "Please mark my account so that my name or address is not rented or sold to other companies." 3. Call all your credit cards, and and tell them "Please mark my account so that my name or address is not rented or sold to other companies." 4. Call any catalogs that you want to continue getting, but tell them "Please mark my account so that my name or address is not rented or sold to other companies." 5. Call all your utilities (phone/cell phone/electric company, etc.) and and tell them "Please mark my account so that my name or address is not rented or sold to other companies." 6. Call any sweeptstakes 800 numbers when you get a sweepstakes solicitation and get them to remove you from their lists. Just takes one call to each sweepstakes company. 7. Whenever you donate money, purchase something on the internet or via a catalog, write in the "comments' box in capital letters, "Please do not sell my name or address". 8. Call 1-888-567-8688 or 1-888-5OPTOUT. This will remove you from junk mail sent by Trans Union, Equifax, innovis, and Experian. Whew! That was a lot of work! But once I finished, after a few weeks my mailbox ONLY contains mail I want. I would say my mail has decreased in volume by at least 70%. Good for the environment too. And that's 70% less paper on your island, and 70% less work for you every day sorting through your mail. A very nice payback for the time you have to spend initially. Forgot to add if it helps with the pantry that the house is almost 4000 square feet. The houses around me are priced in the millions. I got this house as a short sale...very lucky otherwise could never afford this neighborhood. Anyway, I dont know if a pantry would be expected for a house of this size in this neighborhood. Ann, I forgot to add thanks for the pics! They are awesome. LOL that first storage piece probably costs as much as moving everything! It is beautiful! LOL Mindstorm, spoken like a true cyclist! My babies (bikes I mean) may get their own bedroom! If so, I will convert the window in the br to a slider, so that I can exit from it. robotropolis, the architect wants to line them up against the cabs, as you suggest. But he was worried about crowding. He wants to come over with some giant foam to see if it feels crowded. Like you, he also suggested getting a larger table. I love the little fireplace! The dining table actually backs against the back of a drywalled fp. I hired the architect to look at everything and anything in the house that could be moved, because I will be putting tile down. Okay, I finally found a way to type the text of the Celestial Navigations lyrics....or spoken words, actually, from their first album named Chapter I, and it is Track 8: named THE VALLEY. It is something which makes decluttering beautiful, and I do want to share it with you all. Not exactly perfect, but maybe you can appreciate the meaning. THE VALLEY Celestial Navigations, Chapter I I reached the top of the hill still in good shape. The sun was coming up at my back, casting a warm glow on the hills beyond. I knew this was the place I'd been looking for Because there looking like a blue velvet ribbon dropped from a goddess hair was the river winding through the bottom of the valley. I could hear the birds singing their first songs of the day. Crack of a twig and a deer was staring at me through the bushes. I turned and ran back down where I'd left my things More or less in a pile under some giant pine trees. Boxes trunks bags suitcases containers of all shapes & sizes I looked at this mountain of belongs and thought What IS all this suff that I keep carting from one place to the next? I wondered if I would need it. So I opened the largest box. In it was all my childhood. A pair of baby shoes. A teddy bear. And old blue blanket. A tooth I'd lost when I was 5 yrs old. A note passed in class to my first girlfriend and on and on. No I thought I won't need this stuff in that valley. I won't have time for memory. So I closed the box up and pushed it aside. Then a very strange thing happened. My back got straighter and I grew a foot taller. No, it must be my imagination. I opened the largest trunk. In it was all my beauty. An old painting I loved. Piece of sculpture. Broken guitar. Books I knew by heart. My first poems. A shell collection and on and on. No I won't need this stuff in that valley, There will be beauty enough and it is alive. So I closed the trunk and set it aside. No, it was not my imagination, I grew another foot taller, And a gray film washed off my body Like tears and my senses were suddenly flooded With the beauty of my surroundings.. I kicked aside a paper bag Full of canned goods and recipes, and grew another foot taller. I picked up a valise full of philosophical musings, And sociological causes and political speeches And flung them away with a vengeance And suddenly felt completely guiltless and sure of myself And grew another foot taller. Then I dug a large hole. And except for one small box, I shoved everything into the hole and buried it all Forever. I was now so tall and alive, The giant pine trees just grazed the tips of my hands. The small box had grown too In it were some tools and a flute. I picked them up and took them with me for they are the things of the future. And started up the hill. I gazed out over my new world And it was all right. Because it was as large and open as I was. I looked back once. Graywings, try searching on "cable management" on the Ikea site. But that search doesn't seem to pull up everything they have, unless they've discontinued some items this year.

Also check out the Ikea Hackers blog. Search on "cable" and you'll pull up lots of posts where people have come up with solutions for the cables.

And do go back to Apartment Therapy and search on "cable control" or "cord control." There are hundreds of entries with various DIY or purchased solutions.

My own solution for computer cables is a) an iMac (just has fewer cables and also has cord control built in) and b) an old desk with drawers and a "modesty" panel, so all I have to do is drop the cords behind the desk and they are hidden and c) wireless router and printer, to eliminate a few cables.

My one tip is to label all the cords with what they are for. Saves a lot of time and bother.

The ThinkGeek website also has a few options for cable control.

Google searches will turn up lots of things that are sold for this--cord covers, wraps, etc.

I like the double-sided Velcro wraps (Home Depot has them) for making the loops--easily done and undone, unlike cable ties.

And I like the grommets we have in the desks at work; they let us put the wires underneath, yet pull them up or down.

And mounting a basket of some kind to the underside of the desk would let you put the bundles of extra wire there.

They also have cords that have like 10 spots to plug things in.Has a switch to turn all off,good in case lightening hits.

i have a large builtin desk in the kitchen where i have a desk top computer, printer, etc...

it is built so that the area where the chair goes is open to the wall behind it and is flanked by cabinets on either side--the cabinets and the desk top have the cord holes and the outlet is on the wall where my knees are---i had lots of cords dangling back there and what i finally did to manage them was put up several of the small command hooks-high and out of sight---the wires are still a mess, but you can't see them!

This does not address the OP but about 10 years ago I was doing a lot of work in Berlin, Germany. One office was having an open house to celebrate the company's 10th anniversary. I was surprised to see NO cords dangling from any desk top and asked how they did it. My colleague sat at the nearest desk and showed me how the top slid toward him revealing a gutter at the rear where all cables lay and were then routed through a hollow back leg of the desk. This was 10 years ago and I've never seen this in the USA. Desk surfaces were remarkably clean and even desks in the center of their open-concept office were starkly tidy. (It was Germany, after all. Even their pencils appeared to have been arranges with a ruler.)
